The Complex Systems program supports scholarship and research directed toward the development of theoretical and mathematical tools that can be applied to the study of complex, adaptive, nonlinear systems. It is anticipated that research funded in this program will address issues in fields such as biology, biodiversity, climate, demography, epidemiology, technological change, economic development, governance, or computation. The JSMF Scholar Awards are designed to support research with a high probability of generating new knowledge and insights. (TGA 1/13)
The Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health (GPCAH) is a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Center for Agricultural Disease and Injury Research, Education, and Prevention. The GPCAH is dedicated to protecting the health and safety of farmers, ranchers, farm workers, their families, and agricultural community members in the US Midwest. The GPCAH is pleased to announce a new round of applications for its small grants program. Proposals can be from two areas: Basic and applied research projects addressing agricultural safety and health priority issues, needs, or gaps; community partnering proposals from community-based organizations and entities with special ability to engage in outreach, education, and translation of evidence-based methods for preventing agricultural injury and illness among agricultural workers.
3-3 Dear Colleague Letter - Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development (BREAD) Ideas Challenge (NSF)
In 2009, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) announced a partnership program entitled "Basic Research to Enable Agricultural Development" or "BREAD" administered by NSF. The objective of BREAD is to support innovative basic scientific research designed to address key constraints to smallholder agriculture in the developing world. The fourth competition will take a novel approach to fulfilling BREAD's goals by division into two separate stages. The first stage will comprise an Ideas Challenge offering up to 25 prizes of $10,000 each for the best ideas for innovative, potentially transformative research foci that, if successfully addressed, could eventually be of significant benefit to smallholder farmers in developing countries. Ideas will be accepted in any area of basic research and technology development in all fields of biological and physical sciences and engineering as long as the proposed research challenge or idea is consistent with the BREAD Program objectives. The winning ideas will be focus areas for the second stage of the program, Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) proposals, although all ideas within the scope of the BREAD Program will continue to be welcome. The Department of Defense (DoD), through the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), supports the demonstration of technologies that address priority DoD environmental requirements. The goal of ESTCP is to promote the transfer of innovative environmental technologies through demonstrations that collect the data needed for regulatory and DoD end-user acceptance. Projects conduct formal demonstrations at DoD facilities and sites in operational settings to document and validate improved performance and cost savings.
Since 1970, NIST, as part of its research program, has provided funding under the Precision Measurement Grant Program (PMGP) primarily to universities and colleges so that faculty may conduct significant research in the field of fundamental measurement or the determination of fundamental constants. NIST sponsors these research projects primarily to encourage basic, measurement-related research in universities and colleges and other research laboratories and to foster contacts between NIST scientists and those faculty members of academic institutions and other researchers who are actively engaged in such work. 3-6 EarthCube: Developing a Community-Driven Data and Knowledge Environment for the Geosciences (NSF)
EarthCube is a community-driven activity sponsored through a partnership between the NSF Directorate of Geosciences and Office of Cyberinfrastructure to transform the conduct of geosciences research and education. EarthCube aims to create a well-connected and facile environment to share data and knowledge in an open, transparent, and inclusive manner, thus accelerating the ability of the geosciences community to understand and predict the Earth system. Proposals are requested to develop and test an EarthCube governance. The critical importance of a community-driven and operated governance framework for EarthCube activities has been highlighted in two 2012 EarthCube community documents. Test Enterprise Governance proposals must be collaborative and broadly inclusive of geoscientists, cyberinfrastructure and computer scientists. They should effectively engage interested agency, industry and international partners. This is a phased planning and implementation activity. The EarthCube Test Enterprise Governance phase entails three specific responsibilities, a Planning stage, a Demonstration stage and on-going Outreach activities. NSF also solicits proposals for EarthCube Research Coordination Networks (RCN). EarthCube RCNs are intended to advance geosciences cyberinfrastructure through interaction and understanding between geoscientists, CI experts, and computer scientists. RCNs will provide geosciences communities with the opportunity to present coherent and representative plans for their cyberinfrastructure needs. Outcomes should impact the communities involved, moving them closer to shared goals. They will provide a voice and impact on the EarthCube process for the geosciences end-user communities, influencing the direction of EarthCube architecture and cyberinfrastructure developments. The Campus Cyberinfrastructure - Network Infrastructure and Engineering (CC-NIE) program invests in improvements and re-engineering at the campus level to support a range of data transfers supporting computational science and computer networks and systems research. The program also supports Network Integration activities tied to achieving higher levels of performance, reliability and predictability for science applications and distributed research projects. Two types of CC-NIE awards will be made. Data Driven Networking and Infrastructure for the Campus and Researcher awards will be supported at up to $500,000 total for up to 2 years. The Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) is seeking applications from non-profit institutions of higher education to operate National, Regional and Tier 1 University Transportation Centers (UTCs or Centers). The purpose of these Centers is to advance U.S. technology and expertise in the many modes and disciplines comprising transportation through the mechanism of research, education, and technology transfer; to provide a critical transportation knowledge base outside the US DOT; and to address vital workforce needs for the next generation of transportation leaders. A UTC must be located in the United States or territories. It may be a single university or a consortium of tow or more universities. The mission of the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is to advance the health of all dogs and their owners by funding sound scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat, and cure canine disease. Our vision is to address the health needs of all dogs across their entire lifetime by focusing on all aspects of their physical, mental, and social well-being. We embrace the One Health model as a critical tool to achieving our vision. The AKC Canine Health Foundation is currently accepting applications for investigator-initiated research projects in all areas of canine health.
Applications are now available for the Spring 2013 cycle of the Kansas Health Foundation's Recognition Grant program. Recognition Grants expand the Foundation's support to a broad range of organizations throughout the state. The grants are targeted for organizations and agencies proposing meaningful and charitable projects that fit within the Foundation's mission of improving the health of all Kansans. In addition to supporting projects, the Foundation also seeks to support initiatives that focus on promoting policy, systems and environmental transformations that support health. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites multi-project applications to be part of a network of synergistic research teams focused on the immunological parameters of virus infection and vaccination that are important for understanding the key molecular and cellular immune mechanisms involved in the natural control of infection, the induction of protective immunity by vaccination, or the immune-mediated processes that cause pathology after virus infection or vaccination. Studies involving multiple viruses are encouraged to foster discovery of novel immune mechanisms and generalizable principles of anti-viral immunity. Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is designed to create safer neighborhoods through a sustained reduction in crime associated with gang and gun violence, and violent offenders. The program's effectiveness is based on the cooperation of local, state, and federal agencies engaged in a unified approach led by the U.S. Attorney (USA) in each district. The USA is responsible for establishing a collaborative PSN task force of federal, state, and local law enforcement and other community members to implement gang and gun crime enforcement, intervention and prevention initiatives within the district. Through the PSN task force, the USA will implement the five design features of PSN--partnerships, strategic planning, training, outreach, and accountability--to address specific gun and gang crime, and violent offenders, in the most violent neighborhoods.
