25-1 Healthy Schools: Environmental Factors, Children's Health and Performance, and Sustainable Building Practices (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing research that will inform school (K-12 educational facilities) building design, construction and operation practices in order to foster safe and healthy school environments and maximize student achievement and teacher and staff effectiveness. Specifically, the goal is to understand the relationship between environmental factors defined broadly and the health, safety and performance of students, teachers and staff. In addition to health-related concerns, the school environment may similarly impact the performance of students, teachers and staff, including lowering student achievement outcomes, and reducing teacher effectiveness. Accordingly, research is needed to better understand the negative impacts of the school environment on students' health, safety, and achievement, and to measure the positive potential benefits of effectively managing environmental factors and applying sustainable building practices. The results of this research will help ensure that the risks of environmentally-induced illness and injury to America's students, teachers and other school staff are diminished or avoided and that students, teachers and staff are provided with optimal learning environments in their schools.
The Grammy Foundation annually provides support for music archiving and preservation efforts and for scientific research projects related to the impact of music on the human condition. Scientific Research Projects Grants include the study of the effects of music on mood, cognition and healing; the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals; and the creative process underlying music. The Archiving and Preservation Projects Grants are awarded to organizations and individuals in support of efforts that advance the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas. A program of the American Academy in Rome, the Rome Prize is annually awarded to thirty emerging artists and scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers who exemplify the highest standard of excellence in arts and humanities scholarship, in order to allow them to pursue their work in an atmosphere conducive to intellectual and artistic freedom, interdisciplinary exchange, and innovation. Fellows are chosen from the disciplines of architecture, design, historic preservation and conservation, landscape architecture, literature, musical composition, visual arts, ancient studies, medieval studies, Renaissance and Early Modern studies, and Modern Italian studies. Each Rome Prize winner is provided with a stipend, meals, a bedroom with private bath, and a study or studio. (PND 6/21/13)
The National Historical Publications and Records Commission seeks projects that are exploring innovative methods to improve the preservation, public discovery, or use of historical records. Projects may also focus on techniques and tools that will improve the professional performance and effectiveness of those who work with such records, such as archivists, documentary editors, and records managers. Projects must anticipate results that will affect more than a single institution or a single state. Projects may focus on methods of working with records in any format, including born-digital records. Projects designed to publish historical records must focus on innovative methods of presenting archival records as primary sources. The Army Research Office is issuing a Broad Agency Announcement for the establishment of Research in Quantum Computing. There are two separate research topics: 1) Quantum characterization, verification, and validation which seeks proposals addressing the development of theoretical and experimental techniques, procedures, and methods for characterizing few-qubit systems with a focus on metrics relevant to robust fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC); 2) Advanced quantum computing measurement technology Quantum information systems to demonstrate novel qubit measurement techniques for existing qubits. The NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Earth Science Division's Earth Venture (EV) is an important element within the Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) Program. This Earth Venture Suborbital-2 program element solicits proposals for complete suborbital, principal investigator-led investigations to conduct innovative, integrated, hypothesis, or scientific question driven approaches to pressing Earth system science issues. These new investigations will be competitively selected to provide opportunity for investment in innovative Earth system science to enhance our capability to better understand the current state of the Earth and predict future change. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) solicits R01grant applications to develop novel technologies that will enable extremely low-cost, high quality DNA sequencing. The goal of this initiative is to reduce the cost of sequencing a mammalian-sized genome for approximately $1000. Applicants may propose to develop full-scale sequencing systems or to investigate challenges underlying key system components. Recognition Grants from the Kansas Health Foundation expand the Foundation's support to a broad range of organizations throughout the state. The grants are targeted to organizations and agencies proposing meaningful and charitable projects that fit within the Foundation's mission of improving the health of all Kansans. In addition to supporting projects, the Foundation also seeks to support initiatives that focus on promoting policy, systems and environmental transformations that support health.
The PRCRP Idea Award with Special Focus mechanism is intended to support innovative, untested, high-risk/potentially high-reward concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods in cancer research that are directly relevant to service members, their families, and other military beneficiaries. The proposed research project should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale and study design. The Idea Award with Special Focus is not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project. The proposed research project should be novel and innovative. Innovative research may introduce a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, look at existing problems from new perspectives, or exhibit other uniquely creative qualities. The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to request applications for the initiation or continuation of nationally-available neuroscience research education programs that will significantly advance the mission of NINDS. The NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism is designed to support the development and implementation of creative and innovative neuroscience research education programs for biomedical, behavioral, and clinical researchers. Proposed research education programs submitted to this FOA are expected to be designed for, and available to, a national audience. Programs intended for a local or regional audience are not appropriate for this FOA. R25 programs may complement ongoing research training and education occurring in the U.S., but the proposed educational experiences must be distinct from those research training and research education programs currently receiving federal support. The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program seeks to attract outstanding young people with an interest in pursuing a career in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. It encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. The program is comprised of two major components. There is the International Affairs Graduate Fellowship Program and the undergraduate Summer Enrichment Program (SEP). The Graduate Fellowship Program provides support for graduate school, professional development and entry into the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State.
