The Biomass Program has recently developed Critical Technology Goals (CTG) related to a) converting biomass into processable sugars or other fractionation products and b) upgrading those processable sugars or biomass fractions into products such as advanced biofuels. The focus of this FOA is found in these two topic areas: Topic Area 1- Intermediate Production: Innovative synthetic biological approaches to the cost-effective fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass, both terrestrial and aquatic, into processable components such as fermentable sugars, modified lignin suitable for conversion to higher value materials, and oligomeric sugar fractions or biopolymers that are more easily converted to monomers for further processing. Interactive digital media may be websites, games, mobile applications, virtual environments, streaming video, or podcasts. Water is the foundation of life on Earth. Water supply is a critical aspect of human society, enabling a wide range of recreational, social, and economic activities. Entrained in these activities is water quality: that the water to be used by human beings, society, ecosystems, etc., is of an appropriate characteristic or property for use. Threatening the aquatic environments are global climatic changes and episodic environmental events that have significant impacts on water quality and availability. Satellite observations of rivers, streams, and coastal and global ocean, as well as terrestrial and atmospheric processes are needed to understand what Earth System processes impact water quality.
