The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, Office of Biological and Environmental research (OBER), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), announce their interest in receiving applications for genomics-based research that will lead to the improved use of biomass and plant feedstocks for the production of fuels such as ethanol or renewable chemical feedstocks. Specifically, applications are sought for fundamental research on plants that will improve biomass characteristics, biomass yield, or sustainability. Systems biology approaches to identify genetic indicators enabling plants to be efficiently bred or manipulated, or research to predict phenotype form underlying genotype that could lead to improved feedstock characterization and sustainability are also encouraged. The Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) serves to increase access to shared scientific and engineering instruments for research and research training in our Nation's institutions of higher education, museums, science centers, and not-for-profit organizations. This program especially seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering, by providing shared instrumentation that fosters the integration of research and education in research-intensive learning environments. Development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter-and/or intra-organizational use are encouraged, as are development efforts that leverage the strengths of private sectors partners to build instrument development capacity at academic institutions. Cost-sharing at the level of 30% of the total project cost is required for Ph.D.-granting institutions of higher education and for non-degree-granting organizations. Non-Ph.D.-grant institutions of higher education are exempt from the cost-sharing requirement. The limit on number of proposals per organization is three. The purpose of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure Cooperative Agreements Program (NSDI CAP) is to fund innovative projects in the geospatial data community to build the infrastructure necessary to effectively discover, access, share, manage, and use digital geospatial data. Specific NSDI CAP areas of emphasis include: documenting, implementing, and providing outreach for FGDC geospatial standards including metadata; expanding geographic information coordination and collaboration across and between organizational levels; promoting geospatial best practices; and advancing the implementation and exchange of common geospatial data, services, and applications.
The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. Criteria for selection include an independent body of scholarship attained within the last five years of their appointment as independent researchers, and a demonstrated commitment to education, signaling the promise of continuation outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. The program is open to academic institutions in the States, Districts, and Territories of the United States of America that grant a bachelor's or higher degree in the chemical sciences, including biochemistry, materials chemistry, and chemical engineering. Atmospheric Composition: Southeast Asia Composition, Cloud, Climate Coupling Regional Study (SEAC4RS) solicits proposals for participation in two airborne campaigns to be conducted in 2010 to investigate atmospheric processes related to deep convection, chemistry/photochemistry, aerosols and clouds in mid-latitude and tropical environments. Multiple comprehensively instrumented aircraft are required to accomplish this research. NASA and the National Science Foundation plan to collaborate to conduct two synergistic campaigns designed to sample the atmosphere in two very different convective environments: summer mid-latitude continental North America and fall tropical Southeast Asia. Research proposals should focus on understanding the ecological, evolutionary and socio-ecological determinants of transmission by vectors or abiotic agents; the population dynamics and genetics of reservoir species; the transmission to humans, other non-human animals or plants; or the cultural, social behavioral and economic dimensions of disease communication. Research may be on zoonotic, vector-borne or enteric diseases of either terrestrial, freshwater, or marine systems and organisms, including diseases on non-human animals and plants, at any scale from specific pathogens to inclusive environmental systems.
