The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. The Noyce Scholarship Track provides funds to institutions of higher education to support scholarships, stipends, and academic programs for undergraduate STEM major and post-baccalaureate students holding STEM degrees who earn a teaching credential and commit to teaching in high-need K-12 school districts. The NSF Teaching Fellowship/Master Teaching Fellowship Track supports STEM professionals who enroll as NSF Teaching Fellows in master's degree programs leading to teacher certification by providing academic courses, professional development, and salary supplements while they are fulfilling a four-year teaching commitment in a high need school district.This track also supports the development of NSF Master Teaching Fellows by providing professional development and salary supplements for exemplary mathematics and science teachers to become Master Teachers in high need school districts. An institution, on its own or as a member of a consortium, may submit no more than one Noyce proposal per track. The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), announce their interest in receiving applications for genomics-based research that will lead to the improved use of biomass and plant feedstocks for the production of fuels such as ethanol or renewable chemical feedstocks. Specifically, applications are sought for fundamental research on plants that will improve biomass characteristics, biomass yield, or sustainability. Systems biology approaches to identify genetic indicators enabling plants to be efficiently bred or manipulated, or research that yields fundamental knowledge of the structure, function and organization of plant genomes leading to improved feedstock characterization and sustainability are also encouraged. This award supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. Criteria for selection include an independent body of scholarship attained within the first five years of their appointment as independent researchers, and a demonstrated commitment to education, signaling the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. Nominees must hold full-time tenure-track academic appointment, and are normally expected to have been appointed no earlier than mid-year 2004. Institutions may submit only one nomination annually.

45-7 Recovery Act -- Innovative Materials and Processes for Advanced Carbon Capture Technology (DOE)
ARPA-E aims to support the development of high risk/high payoff applied science and technology innovations that will have a positive disruptive impact on the energy landscape. The objective of this topic is to fund high risk, high reward research efforts that will revolutionize technologies that capture carbon dioxide from coal-fired power plants, thereby preventing release into the atmosphere. ARPA-E seeks to complement existing DOE efforts in the field of carbon capture, led by the Office of Fossil Energy and National Energy Technology Laboratory, by accelerating promising ideas from the basic research stage towards large-scale demonstrations and ultimately, commercialization. Areas of interest include: low-cost catalysts to enable systems with superior thermodynamics that are not currently practical due to slow kinetics; robust materials that resist degradation from caustic contaminants in flue gas; and advanced capture processes that dramatically reduce the parasitic energy penalties and corresponding increase in the cost of electricity required for carbon capture. ARPA-E is seeking new ways to make liquid transportation fuels--without using petroleum or biomass--by using microorganisms to harness chemical or electric energy to convert carbon dioxide into liquid fuels. ARPA-E requests innovative proposals which can utilize metabolic engineering and synthetic biological approaches for the efficient conversion of carbon dioxide to liquid transportation fuels. ARPA-E specifically seeks the development of organisms capable of extracting energy from hydrogen, from reduced earth-abundant metal ions, from robust, inexpensive, readily available organic redox active species, or directly from electric current. In FY 2010 and FY 2012, the GeoEd program invites proposals in four main areas: advancing public Earth system science literacy, particularly through strengthening geoscience education in grades K-14 and informal education settings; fostering development and training of the diverse scientific and technical workforce required for 21st century geoscience careers; utilizing modern technologies to facilitate and increase access to geoscience education and/or develop innovative approaches for using geoscience research activities and data for educational purposes; and, establishing regional networks and alliances that bring together scientists, formal and informal science educators, as well as other stakeholders, in support of improving Earth system science education and broadening participation in the geosciences. This new program element solicits proposals to undertake significant studies through the use of data and derived products from two of the Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites, namely Terra and Aqua, and their measurement sensors. This solicitation offers investigators an opportunity to conduct integrative research projects using the new data and products resulting from these satellites, and to become involved in the utilization of EOS data to provide answers to NASA's Earth Science Research questions.
The Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program seeks to increase the number of qualified students entering the fields of information assurance and computer security and to increase the capacity of the United States higher education enterprise to continue to produce professionals in these fields to meet the needs of our increasingly technological society. The SFS program is composed of two tracks: The Scholarship Track provides funding to colleges and universities to award scholarships to students in the information assurance and computer security fields. The Capacity Building Track provides funds to improve the quality and increase the production of information assurance and computer security professionals. Professional development of information assurance faculty and development of academic programs can be funded under this track. K-INBRE is calling for proposals to support: 1) Bridging Grants; 2) Institutional Core Facilities; and 3) Postdoctoral awards. The purpose of this research is to further the ability of Kansas researchers to compete successfully for NIH funds. A Bridging Grant provides interim support to help a project in Cell and Development Biology continue for an eligible investigator who has submitted a grant to NIH that was approved on the basis of scientific merit, but fell short of the funding range. Core Facility awards are for the purpose of providing funds to institutional core facilities that support the research focus of the K-INBRE, Cell and Development Biology. Post-doctoral awards are one-year mentored awards offered for the purpose of facilitating applications to support 1) initiation of post-doctoral research projects and 2) transition from the post-doctoral position to early investigator status.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act authorizes assistance to institutions of higher education (or consortia thereof) to establish or expand health informatics education programs, including certification, undergraduate, and masters degree programs, for both health care and information technology students to ensure rapid and effective utilization and development of health information technologies in the United States health care infrastructure. This funding opportunity, one component of the workforce program, will provide grants to institutions of higher education (or consortia) to support health information technology (health IT) curriculum development.
