E-Team Grants support commercial outcomes by moving innovative products from idea to prototype and then market, and are awarded to multi-disciplinary groups of faculty, students and industry mentors.
As part of the NIH Roadmap for Biomedical Research, the National Institutes of Health invites transformative Research Project Grant (R01) applications from Institutions/organizations proposing groundbreaking, exceptionally innovative, high risk, original and/or unconventional research with the potential to create new scientific paradigms or challenge existing ones. The Consortium for Plant Biotechnology Research, Inc. (CPBR), is now issuing the Request for Preproposals for its 2011 competitions. Preproposals are requested for research that 1) is related to plant biotechnology and 2) addresses industrial problems and opportunities related to bioenergy and/or the environment. Funding for CPBR research for 2011 may come from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and/or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Jefferson Science Fellows program is open to U.S. citizens who hold a tenured faculty position in a field of science, engineering or technology. Jefferson Science Fellows spend one year at the U.S. State Department in the Office of the Science and Technology Advisors to the Secretary in Washington, D.C. and at embassies and missions abroad. During this time they provide technical advice that contributes to foreign policy decision-making. Each institution is entitled to nominate two faculty.
The 711th Human Performance Wing, Human Effectiveness Directorate is soliciting white papers under this announcement for innovative science and technology projects to support advanced bioscience research. Research is sought primarily in the following four technical areas: 1) Applied Biotechnology, 2) Biobehavioral Performance, 3) Biomechanics, and 4) Counterproliferation. The purpose of this BAA is to augment core research activities and facilities to provide radically new military capabilities that improve warfighter performance and combat effectiveness. NIFA announces the availability of grant funds and requests applications for the Higher Education Challenge Grants Program (HEC) for fiscal year 2010 to stimulate and enable colleges and universities to provide the quality of education necessary to produce baccalaureate or higher degree level graduates capable of strengthening the Nation's food and agricultural scientific and professional workforce. Projects must support for-credit, academic coursework with a primary focus in one of the following Program Categories: a) Baccalaureate degree-level teaching enhancement projects in the food and agricultural sciences; b) Masters degree-level teaching enhancement projects only in multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary studies; or c) First professional degree-level teaching enhancement projects in veterinary medicine (DVM).

The purpose of the SSS Program is to increase the number of disadvantaged low-income college students, first generation college students, and college students with disabilities in the United States who successfully complete a program of study at the postsecondary level. The support services provided should increase the retention and graduation rates for these students and facilitate their transfer from two-year to four-year colleges and universities. The support services provided should also foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of students who are limited English proficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homeless children and youth, students who are in foster care or are aging out of the foster care system, and other disconnected students. Student Support Services should also improve the financial and economic literacy of students. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is an independent federal agency tasked with licensing and regulating the Nation's civilian use of byproduct, source, and special nuclear material to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, to promote the common defense and security, and to protect the environment. Funding under this program includes support for nuclear science, engineering, and related disciplines to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials. The funding available for undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, trade school scholarships, and faculty development grants together in FY2010 totals $15 million. This announcement is for undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. NRC requires scholarship and fellowship recipients to serve (6) months in nuclear-related employment for each full or partial year of academic support. The employment may be with NRC, other Federal agencies, State agencies, Department of Energy laboratories, nuclear-related industry, or academia in the recipients sponsored fields of study. The Physical Intelligence Broad Agency Announcement seeks proposals addressing the physical basis of intelligence through the development of theory, demonstrations, and analytic tools. The objective of the theory area is to develop and validate a physical formalism that unifies and expands ideas from diverse domains (e.g. evolution, thermodynamics, information, computation, and others). A critical part of this effort is the creation of a model system on which to develop the formalism (analogous to the Ising model of statistical physics). The objective of the implementation area is to demonstrate the first human-engineered open thermodynamic systems that spontaneously evolve non-trivial "intelligent" behavior under thermodynamic pressure from their environment. Because an open thermodynamic system is inextricably connected to its environment, the implementation area will address holistically the evolving system and its environment. The Geophysics Program supports basic research in the physics of the solid earth to explore its composition, structure, and processes. Laboratory, field, theoretical, and computational studies are supported. Topics include seismicity, seismic wave propagation, and the nature and occurrence of earthquakes; the earth's magnetic, gravity, and electrical fields; the earth's thermal structure; and geodynamics. Supported research also includes geophysical studies of active deformation, including geodesy, and studies of the properties and behavior of earth materials in support of geophysical observation and theory. Support is available for innovative projects that address key questions in biodefense and emerging infectious diseases. Projects must fall within the scope of the following areas and involve agents from the NIAID Category A-C or Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases list. Research areas of interest are: 1) Basic Biology; 2) Mechanisms of pathogenesis; 3) Application of genomic or proteomic strategies; 4) Basic aspects of the innate and adaptive immune responses; 5) Rapid, sensitive, and specific approaches for detection and identification; 6) Target identification for diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines, including assay development; 7) Development of new animal models for pathogenesis studies; for therapeutics and vaccine evaluation; and for rapid diagnostic studies. The program is open to full-time faculty at academic institutions or equivalently ranked investigators from biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries within the MRCE region (Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and the greater Cleveland, OH area). The MRCE is particularly interested in: Junior faculty level investigators without grant support who seek to establish independence; Independent investigators who wish to enter the fields of biodefense or emerging infectious diseases research; Established biodefense or emerging infectious diseases investigators wishing to pursue a new direction within these fields.
39-12 Community-Based Partnerships for Childhood Obesity Prevention and Control: Research to Inform Policy (R03) (NIH)
The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the NICHD is to enhance childhood obesity research by fostering the formation of local, state, or regional teams consisting of researchers, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders (e.g., community representatives, public health practitioners or officials, educators) in order to identify research questions and hypotheses, design and implement the relevant research, and translate the research into evidence relevant to potential policy efforts in this area. The R03 grant mechanism supports different types of projects including pilot and feasibility studies; secondary analysis of existing data; small, self-contained research projects; development of research methodology; and development of new research technology.
