The National Institutes of Health has just announced that, beginning with the October 25, 2009 deadline, eligibility requirements for applying for the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) Award program have increased to include institutions to include those that have received less than $6 million dollars in funding in each of four of the last seven years from the NIH. Kansas State University and the K-State Veterinary School are both now eligible for AREA awards. In addition, the funding limit is raised to $300,000 in direct costs for up to three years. The purpose of the AREA program is to stimulate research in educational institutions that have not been major recipients of NIH support. AREA grants are intended to support small-scale health-related research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions. PA-06-042 (GG 9/22/09)
This FOA solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/organizations proposing exceptionally innovative research on novel hypotheses or difficult problems, solutions to which would have an extremely high impact on biomedical or biobehavioral research that is germane to the mission of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes. The FOA is for support of new projects, not continuation of projects that have already been initiated. The National Geographic Society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for Research and Exploration. All proposed projects must have both a geographical dimension and relevance to other scientific fields and be of broad scientific interest. Applications are generally limited to the following disciplines: anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, biology, botany, geography, geology, oceanography, paleontology, and zoology. In addition the committee is emphasizing multidisciplinary projects that address environmental issues (e.g., loss of biodiversity and habitat, effects of human-population pressures). (TGA 9/09)
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: 1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. A partnership with the Department of Defense supports REU Sites in DoD-relevant research areas. 2) REU supplements may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects or may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements. The Institute for Advanced Study is an independent private institution founded in 1930 to create a community of scholars focused on intellectual inquiry, free from teaching and other university obligations. Each year scholars from around the world apply to come to the Institute to pursue their own research. Members receive a stipend, access to the extensive resources of the Institute, including offices, access to libraries, subsidized restaurant and housing facilities, and some secretarial services. The School of Historical Studies supports scholarship in all fields of historical research, but is concerned principally with the history of western, near eastern and Asian civilizations, with particular emphasis upon Greek and Roman civilization, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, the history of art, the history of science, philosophy, and modern international relations. The U.S-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) is pleased to announce the opening of a special round of applications devoted to energy research (BSF Energy), supported by special funding from the Israeli Ministry of National Infrastructures in coordination with the US Department of Energy. The call is limited to applications in Renewable Energy, Alternative Energy, and Energy Efficiency. Applications must be submitted jointly by at least one Israeli and one American scientist as required in all BSF research proposals.
The NASA Announcement of Opportunity NNH08ZDA009O, "Stand Alone Missions of Opportunity Notice (SALMON)," is amended to establish a new proposal due date for proposals submitted in response to Program Element Appendix (PEA) H3: Small Complete Missions of Opportunity in Astrobiology and Fundamental Space Biology. This PEA has been extensively modified from the previously released version and the new version replaces the old version in its entirety. This PEA solicits proposals for small complete mission in astrobiology or in fundamental space biology. A proposal for a small complete mission is one in which the proposer describes a complete and self-contained investigation (e.g., spacecraft, payload, launch, mission operation, spacecraft communications and navigation, data analysis and data archiving, etc.) that fulfills the solicited objectives and includes all of the elements specified in the solicitation. 34-10 International Collaborations in Chemistry between US Investigators and their Counterparts Abroad (ICC) (NSF)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities between U.S. and foreign investigators. NSF Chemistry will accept collaborative research proposals in chemistry, written in English, which establish new bilateral collaborations between U.S. investigators and investigators from the partner countries. It is envisioned that the program will be expanded to include additional partnering foreign agencies in the coming years. The programs seeks new and highly innovative 3-year collaborative projects that break new ground and demonstrate a high level of synergy between the collaborating investigators. The proposed 3-year projects must be in areas that are supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry's newly announced programs in Chemical Synthesis; Chemical Catalysis; Theory, Models and Computational Methods; Chemical Measurement and Imaging; Chemical Structure, Dynamics and Mechanisms; Macromolecular, Supermolecular and Nanochemistry; Environmental Chemical Sciences; or Chemistry of Life Process. It is generally not the practice of the Chemistry Division to make multiple awards to the same individual. The NIH has established a new program entitled Building Sustainable Community-Linked Infrastructure to Enable Health Science Research, hereafter called the "Community Infrastructure" grants program. This NIH Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), supported by funds provided to the NIH under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 solicits applications from domestic (United States) institutions/organizations proposing to support the development, expansion, or reconfiguration of infrastructure needed to facilitate collaboration between academic health centers and community-based organizations for health science research. Such collaborations should transform the way in which health science research is conducted in communities, and accelerate the pace, productivity, dissemination, and implementation of health research; applications that build upon extant collaborative infrastructure supported by other Federal agencies are strongly encouraged. 34-12 Nutrition and Physical Activity Research to Promote Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Health (R01) (NIH)
This FOA encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications that propose research on the roles of nutrition and physical activity in the development, prevention, and management of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or pulmonary diseases. In particular, the FOA aims to: 1) improve knowledge of the contribution of diet and physical health to these conditions and how sleep influences these relationships, 2) increase the evidence base for refining public health recommendations and clinical guidelines regarding these lifestyle behaviors, and 3) develop and test strategies to improve the adoption of these recommendations. This FOA will utilize the NIH research project R01 grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-09-244, that encourages applications under the R21 grant mechanism.
