28-1 Consortia for High-Throughput-Enabled Structural Biology Partnerships (U01) (NIH)

This FOA solicits proposals to establish partnerships between researchers interested in a biological problem of significant scope and researchers providing a high-throughout structure determination capabilities through the NIGMS PSI:Biology network. Applicants to this FOA should propose work to solve a substantial biological problem for which the determination of many protein structures is necessary. The proteins should be amenable to high-throughput structure determination and/or should provide targets to motivate new technology development. Awardee principal investigators will become part of the PSI:Biology Network Steering Committee and will work jointly with other investigators and NIH staff to manage the overall PSI:Biology initiative. 28-2 Development of New Technologies Needed for Studying the Human Microbiome (NIH)

The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications to develop new and improved technologies for obtaining samples of individual microbial isolates or strains, from the human microbiota, suitable for complete genomic sequence analysis. The goal is to expand the number of reference microbial genome sequences, which in turn will aid in the analysis of the complex microbial populations resident in and on the human body. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, RFA-RM-09-009 that solicits applications under the R21 mechanism. 28-3 Clean Air Research Centers (EPA)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications for Clean Air Research Centers. EPA is interested in supporting research on the health effects of exposure to particulate matter (PM), ozone, and other air pollutants, both singly and in multipollutant atmospheres. Priority research areas include: explaining regional and temporal differences in air pollution risk; determining the origins and transformations of multipollutant atmospheres and their constituents; defining exposure/concentration-response relationships; assessing susceptibility; understanding PM effects in a multipollutant context; and developing greater understanding of PM and ozone health effects. EPA is seeking proposals for integrated, multidisciplinary research centers that will advance understanding air pollution and human health effects. EPA-RC2009-STAR-C1 (GG 6/10/09)

28-4 Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants (NEH)

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) invites applications to the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program. This program is designed to encourage innovations in the digital humanities. By awarding relatively small grants to support the planning stages, NEH aims to encourage the development of innovative projects that promise to benefit the humanities in any area. Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants may involve research that brings new approaches or documents best practices in the study of the digital humanities; planning and developing prototypes of new digital tools for preserving, analyzing, and making accessible digital resources, including libraries' and museums' digital assets; scholarship that examines the philosophical implications and impact of the use of emerging technologies; innovative uses of technology for public programming and education utilizing both traditional and new media; and new digital modes of publication that facilitate the dissemination of humanities scholarship in advanced academic as well as informal or formal educational settings at all academic levels. 20091006-HD (GG 7/15/09)

28-5 Picturing America School Collaboration Projects (NEH)

Building on the national distribution of Picturing America, the National Endowment for the Humanities invites proposals for local and regional projects that foster collaborations between K-12 educators and humanities scholars to encourage engagement with the rich resources of American art to tell America's story. The Picturing America School Collaboration Projects grant opportunity is designed to help teachers and librarians whose schools display the Picturing America images form connections with courses in the core curriculum. These projects will be grounded in the great works of art included in Picturing America, which is part of the Endowment's We the People program. Goals of the Picturing America School Collaboration Projects grants are: to strengthen understanding of the connections between great works of American art and significant events, themes, and topics in the American experience; to encourage local and regional collaboration between K-12 educators and humanities experts who can bring appropriate knowledge to the integration of American artworks in core subjects; to foster discussion of how to use the Picturing America images among K-12 educators within a locality or region; and to provide access to rich scholarly resources and primary materials that support teaching. 20091007-AP (GG 5/26/09)

28-6 Personnel Development to Improve Services and Results for Children With Disabilities-Leadership Preparation in Sensory Disabilities (ED)

The purposes of this program are to 1) help address State-identified needs for highly qualified personnel--in special education, related services, early intervention, and regular education--to work with infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities; and 2) ensure that those personnel have the necessary skills and knowledge, derived from practices that have been determined through scientifically based research and experience, to be successful in serving those children. To meet the requirements of this priority, the project, at a minimum, must conduct the following activities: a) Establish a Consortium comprised of IHEs that prepare students to work as doctoral leaders in all of the following sensory disability areas: Visual impairment and blindness, deaf-blindness, and deafness and hard-of-hearing. 28-7 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2006; Notice of Availability of Funds and Solicitation for Grant Applications for the Health Care Sector and Other High Growth and Emerging Industries (DOL)

The Department of Labor announces the availability of approximately $220 million in grant funds authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (The Recovery Act) for projects that provide training and placement services to help workers pursue careers within select industries. 28-8 Delivery and Development of Instructional Materials (NASA)

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Education is releasing a Cooperative Agreement Notice (CAN) for proposals that incorporate innovative approaches for development and delivery of instructional materials, creates experiences that capture the interest of learners, and actively involves participants in relevant, NASA science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) content applications. 28-9 Competitive Program for Science Museums and Planetariums (NASA)

NASA has announced a competitive funding opportunity for informal education that could result in the award of grants or cooperative agreements to several of the nation's science centers, museums, and planetariums. Proposals for the Competitive Program for Science Museums and Planetariums are expected to use NASA resources to enhance informal education programs related to space exploration, aeronautics, space science, Earth science or microgravity. NASA is uniquely positioned to contribute to informal education through its awe-inspiring facilities, missions, data, images, and employees, such as internationally-known engineers and scientists. Proposals for the program are expected to encourage life-long engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and focus on NASA's contributions to these disciplines. 28-10 Lung Cancer Research Program Concept Award (DOD)

The LCRP Concept Award mechanism supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory that addresses an important problem relevant to lung cancer. The Concept Award is not intended to support a logical progression of an already established research project but, instead, allows Principal Investigators (PIs) the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations. This award mechanism supports high-risk studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation. Proposals must describe how the new idea will enhance the existing knowledge of lung cancer or create an entirely new avenue for investigation. 28-11 Orthopaedic Research Program Hypothesis Development Award (DOD)

The PRORP Hypothesis Development Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY09. This award supports the initial exploration of innovative, untested, and potentially groundbreaking concepts in the field of orthopaedic research that may lead to promising new products, pharmacologic agents (drugs or biologics), behavioral interventions, devices, clinical guidance or emerging technologies for military combat-relevant orthopaedic injuries or rehabilitative care. Innovation and novelty of concept are important aspects of this award mechanism. 28-13 Entrepreneurship Dissertation Fellowship Grants (Kauffman)

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation is a private nonpartisan foundation that works to harness the power of entrepreneurship and innovation to grow economies and improve human welfare. The foundation has announced that the 2009-10 Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship grants of $20,000 each to Ph.D., D.B.A., or other doctoral students for the support of dissertations in the area of entrepreneurship.
