The Office of Biological and Environmental Research of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving applicants for research that supports the Genomics: GTL research program. In this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), applicants are solicited for: 1) Systems-level studies on regulatory and metabolic networks of microbes and microbial consortia involved in biogeochemical cycling of carbon; 2) Development of metatranscriptomic, metaproteomic, and other genome-enabled approaches to understand how shifts in environmental variables impact microbially-mediated carbon cycling processes in terrestrial ecosystems, and 3) Development of methods and techniques for imaging and analysis of microbially-mediated carbon cycling processes in terrestrial ecosystems. 25-2 Novel statistical methods for human gene expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) analysis (R01) (NIH)
This FOA solicits applications to develop innovative statistical methods to detect the influence of genetic variation on tissue-specific gene expression and regulation. The goal of the FOA is to seek proposals to develop statistical methods to appropriately analyze the forthcoming complex data sets generated by the NIH Roadmap initiative entitled Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) Project. Applicants are encouraged to take advantage of existing tissue-specific gene expression datasets and/or simulated datasets, but will also be strongly encouraged to utilize GTEx-generated data, if and when it is available. 25-3 Joint US - UK Research Program: Environmental Behavior, Bioavailability and Effects of Manufactured Nanomaterials (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, in conjunction with the UK Environmental Nanoscience Initiative (UKENI), is seeking joint applications from US and UK partners that: 1) propose integrated model(s) of fate, behavior, bioavailability and effects for several important and representative nanomaterial classes over key environmental pathways using intrinsic material properties and life cycle analysis as a starting point for model development; 2) validate and refine these model(s) through interdisciplinary research, addressing key assumptions and areas of uncertainty; and 3) develop effective methods and tools to detect, assess, and monitor the presence of nanomaterials in biological and environmental samples. The Office of Nuclear Physics, Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy, announces its interest in receiving proposals for Topical Collaborations in Nuclear Theory. Topical Collaborations are fixed-term, multi-institution collaborations established to investigate a specific topic in nuclear physics of special interest to the community, which is well aligned with programmatic NP goals. They also provide a mechanism for maintaining a robust community, by encouraging the creation of tenured university appointments and permanent laboratory positions in nuclear theory. 25-5 Recovery Act: Training Program Development for Commercial Building Equipment Technicians, Building Operators, and Energy Commissioning Agents/Auditors (DOE)
The Department of Energy (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), on behalf of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's (EERE's) Building Technologies Program (BTP), is seeking applications for projects that focus on developing training programs for various building specialists. The programs shall use existing curricula or develop new training curricula for their course content. To achieve the full potential of energy efficient (and eventual net zero-energy) buildings, our Nation needs commercial building equipment technicians, operators, and energy commissioning agents/auditors who know how to properly run and tune building systems. The combination of efficient operations and advanced design will improve the internal built environment: its energy use, comfort, safety, and environment impact. Curricula, certification requirements, and accreditation standards for training on energy efficient practices and technologies advancing industry expertise towards DOE's net-zero energy com mercial building goals are sought. Grant applications from universities, colleges, and college-affiliated research institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Other Minority Institutions (HBCU/OMI) are sought to provide training opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students that will provide the human capital and skills required for implementing and deploying Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) technologies. Training can be accomplished through fundamental research in the CCS technology area. Fundamental research is needed to advance science in: simulation and risk assessment; monitoring, verification, and accounting; geological related analytical tools; methods to interpret geophysical models; well completion and integrity for long-term CO2 storage; and CO2 capture. The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) is pleased to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Patton Trust Research Grants to be submitted to the KCALSI for funding consideration. The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity organization which serves as the coordinating body for the Kansas City region's life science research initiatives by functioning as a facilitator, matchmaker, and potential funder of collaborative research initiatives and assisting in the commercialization of resulting intellectual property. KCALSI is targeting research in five disease focus areas as follows: Oncology, Cardiovascular Disease, Neuroscience, Animal Health/Comparative Medicine, Technology Applied to Biological Problems. Additionally, crosscutting enabling technologies have been identified for support including proteomics, information technology/bioinformatics, imaging, and analytical sciences. Patton Trust Research grant proposals must be specifically focused on genetic bases of diseases that predominately affect children.
A Parker B. Francis Fellowship in Pulmonary Research is intended to support the development of outstanding investigators who plan careers in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Fellowship support helps them the transition to independent, self-supporting, faculty members. Parker B. Francis Fellowship grants are awarded to institutions to provide stipends, fringe benefits and travel expenses for qualified post-doctoral fellows or newly appointed assistant professors. Award recipients will thereby be enabled to devote the major part of their professional effort to research related to pulmonary disease and lung biology. Mentorship of the fellow by an established investigator is required. Institutions may have only two Parker B. Francis Fellows in the same department at a given time. A department may submit no more than one application annually.
25-10 Exploring Linkages Between Health Outcomes and Environmental Hazards Exposures, and Interventions for Public Health Tracking and Risk Management (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications to develop new or improved environmental public health indicators (EPHIs) to build linkages between environmental hazards, human exposures, and public health outcomes. The aim of the research is to develop indicators that can be used for long-term tracking and surveillance of environmental public health, making better informed decisions, and assessing the actual impacts of environmental risk management decisions. Novel application of statistical methods or models may be needed to establish probable relationships between existing datasets or investigate the consequences of environmental actions and policy changes. This FOA, issued by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), solicits cooperative agreement grant applications from institutions to conduct randomized controlled trials to test innovative interventions that address issues immediately germane to the childhood obesity epidemic and runs in parallel with a separate Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that solicits applications for a Research Coordinating Unit (RFA HL-10-005). This FOA targets young children, pre-adolescents and adolescents and encourages novel interventions. Applications will be accepted from multi-disciplinary research teams, networks or collaborative groups that are already established or will be formed to conduct high-quality, transdisciplinary research in childhood obesity prevention and treatment. The FY09 PRCRP Mentor-Predoctoral Fellow Research Fellow Research Award mechanism is designed to promote new ideas that are still in the early stage of development while training outstanding candidates in the topic area of noninvasive cancer ablation treatment research including selective targeting with nanoparticles. Research projects should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strong scientific rationale. The PRCRP New Investigator Award supports independent Principal Investigators in the early stages of their careers, and it strongly encourages a designated collaborator.
