It is inevitable that in every swine production system animals will become ill or injured in such a way that euthanasia will be necessary. However, there are a limited number of humane methods available for pork producers to use, especially for suckling (up to 12 lbs) and nursery pigs (up to 70 lbs). The Animal Welfare Committee has reserved $500,000 specifically for on-farm euthanasia research and is soliciting proposals that are multi-disciplinary in their approach to: Validate existing recommended methods of euthanasia of swine, especially for suckling and nursery pigs and Identify and validate new and novel methods of euthanasia of swine. Proposals are also being solicited in the areas of Swine Health-PCVAD, Public Health and Antimicrobial Use/Resistance.

The CCAMPIS Program supports the participation of low-income parents in postsecondary education through the provision of campus-based child care services. Priority is given to institutions of higher education that submit applications describing child care programs that: 1) Leverage significant local or institutional resources, including in-kind contributions; and 2) Utilize a sliding fee scale for child care services provided under this program in order to support a high number of low-income parents pursuing postsecondary education at the institution. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Institute for Climate Change Research (NICCR) announces its request for research proposals that would answer important questions about potential effects of contemporary climate change on the structure and functioning of important U.S. terrestrial ecosystems, or that would answer important questions about possible feedbacks from terrestrial ecosystems to changes in climate or atmospheric composition. This request for proposals is to (1) perform one-year synthesis activities that address a clearly defined gap in scientific knowledge of terrestrial ecosystems and climate change, (2) renew ongoing NICCR research projects for one year, or (3) carry out value-added additions to existing NICCR or non-NICCR-funded experiments that can be completed in one year. NICCR divides terrestrial ecosystems into two groups: inland (not adjacent to an ocean) and coastal (adjacent to an ocean, including barrier islands). NASA Terrestrial Ecology research addresses changes in Earth's carbon cycle and ecosystems using space-based observations. The goals of NASA's Terrestrial Ecology research are to improve understanding of the structure and function of global terrestrial ecosystems, their interactions with the atmosphere and hydrosphere, and their role in the cycling of the major biogeochemical elements and water. The Planetary Atmospheres program supports scientific investigations that contribute to the understanding of the origins and evolution of the atmosphere of planets and their satellites and comets. The goal of the Generation Three (Gen-3) Engineering Research Centers (ERC) Program is to create a culture in engineering research and education that links discovery to technological innovation through transformational fundamental and engineered systems research in order to advance technology and produce engineering graduates who will be creative U.S. innovators in a globally competitive economy. Recognizing that optimizing efficiency and product quality are no longer sufficient for U.S. industry to remain competitive, these ERCs will optimize academic engineering research and education to stimulate increased U.S. innovation in a global context. They will develop this culture of discovery and innovation through a symbiotic relationship between academic researchers, small innovative firms, larger industrial and practitioner partners, and organizations devoted to entrepreneurship and innovation. The lead university and no more than four domestic partner universities may join in a long-term partnership to form, support, and sustain and ERC. These partners will be committed to support and sustain the ERC through cost sharing and the involvement of the Dean of Engineering in the ERC's Council of Deans. At least two and up to four awards will be made in the following topic areas: Complex, Coupled Physical Civil Infrastructure Systems under Stress; Energy Systems for a Sustainable Future; and Transformational Engineered Systems-Open Category with Topic Chosen by the Proposing ERC Team. EPA Region 7 is soliciting proposals from organizations to fund indoor air quality (IAQ) projects that address the following two program priority areas: Assistance on the adoption of EPA's IAQ Tools for Schools program, and indoor asthma triggers and exposure education. Projects must occur within the states of EPA Region 7-Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and/or Nebraska. EPA requires that all grant recipients adequately address environmental outputs and outcomes. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC) has released NASA Research Announcement (NRA), entitled Ground-Based Studies in Space Radiobiology which solicits ground-based proposals for the Space Radiation Program Element (SRPE) components of the Human Research Program (HRP). Proposals are solicited by the SRPE in the area of Space Radiation Biology utilizing beams of high energy heavy ions simulating space radiation at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York. The Midwest Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, funded by NIH's NIAID, is receiving funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Projects for this funding must be exceptionally innovative and propose very high-risk research plans but which also hold the potential for delivering transformational results or paradigm shifts. Funding will terminate no more than two years after the award. All areas of investigation that are suitable for RCE funding, as outlined in the NIH RFA AI-08-002, are eligible for support.
15-10 Biomedical Researchers Invited to Design Experiments For the International Space Station (NIH/NASA)
The National Institutes of Health and the National Air and Space Administration are partnering to conduct biomedical experiments that astronauts could perform on the International Space Station. In a notice to scientists at universities, medical centers, and companies across the United States, the NIH has announced its willingness to fund highly meritorious biomedical experiments that could utilize the unique environment in space and produce breakthroughs to improve human health on Earth. The International Space Station provides a special microgravity and radiological environment that Earth-based laboratories cannot replicate.
The FY 2009 Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) is offering a new award mechanism, the Ovarian Cancer Academy. The Ovarian Cancer Academy is intended to provide intensive mentoring, national networking, and a peer group for early-career faculty investigators. The Ovarian Cancer Academy will be a virtual career development and collaborative and interactive research training environment consisting of up to five Early-Career Investigator/Designated Mentor pairs from different institutions and will be led by an Academy Dean. Applications to this award mechanism must be submitted by each Early-Career Investigator of the Early-Career Investigator/Designated Mentor pair, or by an individual applying to serve as the Academy Dean. This award: provides the Early-Career Investigator with funding, networking opportunities, and research experience necessary to develop and sustain a successful, independent career at the forefront of ovarian cancer research; and provides support and protected time for the Early-Career Investigator for five years of intensive research.
With this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites grant applications that: a) address the etiology and etiologic mechanisms of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); b) propose development of animal models for HCC; c) propose novel approaches to prevent HCC malignancy; d) propose therapeutic or diagnostic tools for reliable prognostic indicators for HCC; and/or e) develop therapeutic approaches to minimize morbidity and mortality associated with HCC in humans. The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support high impact, innovative exploratory/developmental investigations to determine the mechanism of igE-mediated food allergy and related co-morbid conditions using ex vivo studies with human specimens and studies with current or new animal models of food allergy. Since 1991, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) has explicitly supported the association between Head Start programs and their local research community through the Head Start Graduate Student Research grants. These awards attract applications from leading academic researchers and their graduate students, specializing in social sciences, education and/or health. In close collaboration with their Head Start program partners, these experts design high-quality projects that directly address the needs of low-income children and families and their early childhood educators.
