9-1 Recovery Act Limited Competition: NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research (RC1) (NIH)
As part of the Recovery Act, the NIH invites, through this limited competition, NIH Challenge Grant (RC1) applications from institutions/organizations proposing novel research in areas that address specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways. 9-2 Enhancing Ecosystem Services From Agricultural Lands: Management, Quantification, And Developing Decision Support Tools (EPA/USDA)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), as part of its Agricultural and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Competitive Grants Program and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, are seeking applications proposing research on the ecosystem services provided by agricultural lands. Ecosystem services are the goods and services derived from natural and managed ecosystems upon which human welfare depends. Because of the global intensification of land use, these services are in decline, especially in agricultural ecosystems. Ecosystem services are essential in maintaining both human welfare as well as ecological integrity, yet these services can be affected by natural changes and management actions. In addition, agricultural lands are experiencing significant land use changes as demonstrated by the rapid conversion of these lands from traditional farming use, to alternate farming practices, to urban development, and to non-agricultural use. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the eighth annual National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. This competition is open to public-sector or private sector applicants that have used the principles of smart growth to create better places. Private-sector applicants are encouraged to submit applications for projects that demonstrate a significant public-private partnership. Smart growth development serves the economy, the community, and the environment. Smart growth approaches to development create clean environmental benefits, including improved air and water quality, preservation of critical habitat and open space, and more cleanup and re-use of brownfield sites. This year, applications will be accepted in five categories: Built Projects, Policies and Regulations, Smart Growth and Green Building, Smart Growth Streets, and Overall Excellence in Smart Growth.
A virtual organization is a group of individuals whose members and resources may be dispersed geographically, but who function as a coherent unit through the use of cyberinfrastructure. Virtual organizations are increasingly central to the science and engineering projects funded by the National Science Foundation. Focused investments in sociotechnical analyses of virtual organizations are necessary to harness their full potential and the promise they offer for discovery and learning. The Virtual Organizations as Sociotechnical Systems (VOSS) program supports scientific research directed at advancing the understanding of what constitutes effective virtual organizations and under what conditions virtual organizations can enable and enhance scientific, engineering, and education production and innovation. Disciplinary perspectives may include (but are not limited to) anthropology, complexity sciences, computer and information sciences, decision and management sciences, economics, engineering, organization theory, organizational behavior, social and industrial psychology, public administration, and sociology. An investigator may participate as a PI, co-PI, or other senior personnel in no more than two proposals submitted in FY 2009 in response to this program solicitation. NSF 09-540
9-5 The Role of Healthcare and Insurance in Improving Outcomes in Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment (ACS)
The American Cancer Society is announcing this RFA to investigate the impact of healthcare costs, healthcare system and capacity, insurance status, social factors and delivery of health care services, on outcomes in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. The purpose of this RFA is to stimulate research on the effects of the US healthcare system structure and the role of insurance on access to screenings and treatment. Studies may be at the state, multi-state, or national levels, or otherwise involve large populations.
The program is designed to provide one-time seed funding to help initiate work requiring immediate attention until other longer-term resources can be secured to address the issue. CSREES will be soliciting proposals on an as-needed basis during the year to address specific new or emerging issues. For this particular solicitation, CSREES is requesting proposals that address specific aspects of the following issues: Redbay ambrosia beetle and Laurel Wilt in avocados; 1000 cankers disease of walnut; Uganda (Ug99) Strain of Wheat Stem Rust. The purpose of the Pest Management Alternatives Program (PMAP) is to provide support for and encourage the development and implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) practices, tactics, and systems for specific pest problems while reducing human and environmental risks. The successful management of pest problems in commercial production is facing severe challenges due to regulatory changes, emergence of new pest problems, and the development of pest resistance to present management technologies. The greatest impact on current management technologies is in the production of specialty crops; however, other crops, including grain, forage and fiber, as well as animal health, are also being impacted by these changes. The Planetary Geology and Geophysics (PGG) program supports scientific investigations of planetary surfaces and interior, satellites (including the Moon), satellite and ring systems, and small Solar System bodies such as asteroids and comets. The goals of the PGG program are to foster the synthesis, analysis, and comparative study of data that will improve the understanding of the extent and influence of planetary geological and geophysical processes on the bodies of the Solar System. Supported research projects involve analysis and synthesis of existing data to investigate geological and geophysical processes and phenomena observed on natural objects within the Solar System. The Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program aims to significantly increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents receiving post secondary degrees in the computing disciplines, with an emphasis on students from communities with longstanding underrepresentation in computing. Those underrepresented groups are women, persons with disabilities, African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. The BPC program seeks to engage the computing community to develop and implement innovative methods, frameworks, and strategies to improve recruitment and retention of these students through undergraduate and graduate degrees. Projects that target stages of the academic pipeline from middle school through the early faculty ranks are welcome. The BPC program will support three categories of awards: Alliances, Demonstration Projects, and Leveraging, Scaling, or Adapting Projects. NSF 09-534
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces an extramural funding competition supporting research into the development and improvement of air pollution emission inventories. EPA is interested in supporting research that will advance scientific understanding leading to improvements in air pollution emissions information since emission inventories are relied on both to develop effective control strategies and reliable information about air quality trends for accountability, and to help produce accurate air quality forecasts.
This FOA issued by the National Institutes of Health solicits pre-applications for Botanical Research Center applications in response to RFA-OD-09-001 (Dietary Supplements Research Centers: Botanicals - P50). These pre-applications will be submitted by institutions/organizations that propose to conduct collaborative interdisciplinary research on botanicals, particularly those that are relevant to dietary supplements. Basic and preclinical research with potential application to health maintenance and/or primary prevention of disease is encouraged as the main area of emphasis. Pre-applications are a necessary first step in applying for a Botanical Research Center award (see RFA-OD-09-001). The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) solicits applications to inform its search for the knowledge and tools to guide policy and practice. Improvements in science and technology have increased capabilities to use DNA in terms of the amount of evidence needed to obtain DNA, the speed of DNA processing, and the range of crimes DNA can help solve. NIJ is interested in stimulating research to examine the impact of these forensic advances on the criminal justice system as well as the impact of changes in policies to adapt to the more widespread use of DNA.
