Today, a new, international competition called the Digging into Data Challenge was announced by four leading research agencies: the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) from the United Kingdom, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) from the United States, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) from Canada. The Digging into Data Challenge encourages humanities and social science research using large-scale data analysis, challenging scholars to develop international partnerships and explore vast digital resources, including electronic repositories of books, newspapers and photographs to identify new opportunities for scholarship. Applicants will form international teams from at least two of the participating countries.
21st Century Research Awards are designed to support research projects with a high probability of generating new knowledge and insights. Projects submitted for funding consideration should be at an early, even preliminary stage of development, and should be intended to break new ground or to challenge commonly-held assumptions. Projects submitted should be sufficiently novel, cross-disciplinary, or heterodox so that they have a strong likelihood of influencing the development of new ways of thinking about important problems. This program aims to establish a national network of learning environments and resources for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. The program has four tracks: Pathways projects are expected to provide stewardship for the content and services needed by major communities of learners. Targeted research will focus primarily on educational impact. Services projects are expected to develop services that support users and resource collection providers that enhance the impact, efficiency, and value of the NSDL network. Projects that explore specific topics that have immediate applicability to collections, services, and other aspects of the development of the NSDL network, which were submitted as Targeted Research under previous solicitations, should now be submitted as small grants to the Services section of the program. The existing NSDL Resource Center will provide collaboration assistance across all projects; undertake strategic partnership development on behalf of projects particularly with respect to non-academic entities; coordinate and, in some cases, perform thematic research and evaluation studies related to the program; synthesize findings across the portfolio; and disseminate findings of the accomplishments of the NSDL program. An individual may serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) on no more than one proposal, including collaborative proposals, submitted in the FY2009 competition. The intent of the FOA will be to select integrated biorefinery projects that have the necessary technical and economic performance data that validates readiness for the next level of scale up. In general, integrated biorefineries employ various combinations of feedstocks and conversion technologies to produce a variety of products, with the main focus on producing biofuels. DOE encourages applications that propose novel or breakthrough technologies and those that include appropriate collaboration between and among industry, academia, and DOE National Laboratories, FFRDCs (Federally Funded Research and Development Centers) or other government-funded facilities. This funding opportunity addresses a critical need for biologically relevant carbohydrate libraries; means to functionalize and link carbohydrates; efficient high-throughput screening tools for exploring glycan-protein, glycan-lipid interactions; and carbohydrate standards necessary for use in the structural analysis of biologically relevant glycans. 6-9 Transdisciplinary Cancer Genomics Research: Post-Genome Wide Association (Post-GWA) Initiative (U19) (NIH)
The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), is to promote thorough and efficient identification of genomic regions associated with cancer susceptibility. The FOA specifically solicits applications proposing transdisciplinary research projects designed to: a) take advantage of the existing Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) of cancer by exploiting previously generated initial scan GWAS data; and b) accelerate and coordinate integrative post-GWAS discovery research. Each application should consist of two to three component sub-projects closely pertinent to a single unifying research theme. A flood of new information, from whole-genome sequences to detailed structural information to inventories of earth's biota to greater appreciation of the importance of lateral gene transfer in shaping evolutionary history, is transforming 21st century biology. Along with comparative data on morphology, fossils, development, behavior, and interactions of all forms of life on earth, these new data streams make even more critical the need for an organizing evolutionary context. Phylogeny, the genealogical map for all lineages of life on earth, provides an overall framework to facilitate biological information retrieval, prediction and analysis. The National Science Foundation announces its intention to continue support of creative and innovative research that will resolve evolutionary relationships for large groups of organisms throughout the history of life. The Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) has entered into an agreement with the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (DMPS) of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in supporting joint projects between U.S.-based mathematicians/statisticians and China-based mathematicians in all research areas of mathematical and statistical sciences. NSF expects visits of U.S.-based researchers to Chinese institutions for a period of two or more weeks, sufficient to establish new and innovative research collaborations. NSFC also expects visits of China-based researchers to U.S. institutions for a period of two or more weeks. The Corporation for National and Community Service announces the availability of grant funding to support higher education service-learning and community service programs that address community needs through local service projects. Key agency priorities for the 2009 Higher Education grant competition include: Creating and/or expanding initiatives engaging campuses and the communities they serve. This announcement solicits NICHD Cooperative Agreement Conference (U13) applications to conduct health disparities-related meetings, workshops, and symposia. The objectives of these meetings will be to establish academic-community partnerships, identify community-research priorities, and develop long-term collaborative agendas.
