ACLS invites applications for the eighth annual competition for the Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowships, generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in honor of Charles A. Ryskamp, literary scholar, distinguished library and museum director, and long-serving trustee of the Foundation. These fellowships support advanced assistant professors and untenured associate professors in the humanities and related social sciences whose scholarly contributions have advanced their fields and who have well-designed and carefully developed plans for new research. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant. ACLS does not fund creative work (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects.
The Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) program develops long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. The centers are catalyzed by a small investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are primarily supported by industry center members, with NSF taking a supporting role in their development and evolution. Each center is established to conduct research that is of interest to both the industry and the center. An I/UCRC not only contributes to the Nation's research infrastructure base and enhances the intellectual capacity of the engineering and science workforce through the integration of research and education, but also encourages and fosters international cooperation and collaborative projects. This solicitation is for research aimed at understanding changing seasonality in the arctic system. There now exists abundant evidence that pervasive changes are underway in the patterns of seasonality in the Arctic. The timing and dynamics of key events such as spring melt and fall freeze-up are shifting in response to a changing arctic climate, impacting the interconnected physical, biological, and human components and processes of the arctic system. Interdisciplinary proposals are sought that employ field studies, retrospective investigation, modeling, or synthesis to explore how changes in succession (here, the sequence, nature, and timing of critical seasonal events, to include but not be limited to ecological succession) affect the linkages between, and feedbacks among, components and processes of the arctic system, thus altering the characteristics and functioning of the system as a whole. USAID/Madagascar is committed to increasing sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation and is interested in implementing programs in selected areas of the country. The purpose of the Enduring Questions grant program is to encourage faculty and students at the undergraduate level to grapple with the most fundamental concerns of the humanities, and to join together in deep, sustained programs of reading in order to encounter influential thinkers over the centuries and into the present day. Enduring questions, are to an overarching degree, pre-disciplinary. They are questions to which no discipline or field or profession can lay an exclusive claim. Enduring questions can be tackled by reflective individuals regardless of their chosen vocations, areas of expertise, or personal backgrounds. They are questions that have more than one plausible or interesting answer. The American Council of Learned Societies is accepting applications for the third annual competition for the ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation the program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships are intended to support an academic year dedicated to work on a major scholarly project that takes a digital form. Projects may involve development of new digital tools that further humanistic research (such as digital research archives or innovative databases); research that depends on or is greatly enhanced by the use of such tools; the representation of research that depends on or is greatly enhanced by the use of such tools; or some combination of these features. The Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG) Program is designed to address the fact that certain groups are underrepresented in the geosciences relative to the proportions of those groups in the general population. The primary goal of the OEDG Program is to increase participation in the geosciences by African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans (American Indians and Alaskan Natives), Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesians or Micronesians), and persons with disabilities. A secondary goal of the program is to increase the perceived relevance of the geosciences among broad and diverse segments of the population. The OEDG Program supports activities that will increase the number of members of underrepresented groups who: are involved in formal pre-college geoscience education programs; pursue bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in the geosciences; enter geoscience careers; and participate in informal geoscience education programs. The OEDG Program offers three funding Tracks: OEDG Planning Grants; Track 1: Proof-of-Concept Projects; and Track 2: Full-Scale Projects. Institutions are allowed to submit more than one Track 1 proposal. Institutions may submit only one Track 2 proposal as either the Lead Institution of a Collaborative Proposal or the sole submitting organization. NSF 08-605

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) invites grant applications using comprehensive systems biology approaches intended to restore lost auditory hair cells and their sensory function following damage to the inner ear from a variety of factors including disease, aminoglycosides, noise, and aging. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-08-176, that encourages applications under the R21. The National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Energy invite applications for the establishment or continuation of International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) to address the interdependence of biodiversity exploration for potential applications in health and energy, with investments in research capacity that support sustainable use of these resources, the knowledge to conserve them, and equitable partnership frameworks among research and development organizations in the U.S. and low and middle income countries. This FOA is operating under a pilot initiative for shorter applications than the regular NIH page allowances. Only one application from any single institution will be reviewed. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health, invites applications for research examining the neural and behavioral signatures of age-related changes in cognition, with particular emphasis on the determination of characteristics that distinguish healthy age-related cognitive change from pathological cognitive change. The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate basic research to identify neural and behavioral profiles of cognitive aging, particularly applications that explore these areas at multiple levels of analysis. Applications that advance the interpretation and understanding of whether and how the brain and/or behavior changes and adapts with age for maintenance of good cognitive function are encouraged. The Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) aims to foster the development of the knowledge, theories, data, tools, and human capital needed to cultivate a new Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP). The SciSIP program underwrites fundamental research that creates new explanatory models, analytic tools and datasets designed to inform the nation's public and private sectors about the processes through which investments in science and engineering (S&E) research are transformed into social and economic outcomes. The FY 2009 competition includes three emphasis areas: Analytical Tools, Model Building, and Data Development and Augmentation.
