The fellowships supported through the Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants Program are intended to encourage outstanding students to pursue and complete graduate degrees in critical areas of national need. For FY 2008, CSREES intends to support graduate fellowship training for both Master's and doctoral levels of study. Applications are being solicited in the following Targeted Expertise Shortage Areas: 1) agricultural genomics and bioinformatics; 2) natural resources and the environment; 3) agricultural systems and natural resource engineering; 4) agricultural management and economics; 5) food science; 6) human nutrition; 7) sciences for agricultural biosecurity; and 8) training in sustainable sciences. The Economic Research Service (ERS) is accepting economic research proposals in two broad research areas of importance to the USDA's invasive species policies and programs. The term Invasive species is applied broadly to include any vertebrate, invertebrate, weed, fungus, plant disease, animal or livestock disease, or other organism that: 1) is nonnative, alien, or exotic to the ecosystem where it exists or potentially could be introduced- including agricultural, range, and forest ecosystems; and 2) When introduced causes, or is likely to cause, economic or environmental harm. Proposals should focus on applied economic research that has direct implications for USDA policies and programs for protection from, control/management of, regulation concerning, or trade policy relation to invasive species. The US EPA is accepting proposals from eligible applicants under two National Priorities: 1) Watershed/Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) National Priority and 2) Nonprofit Source National Priority. The Watershed/TMDL National Priority focuses on projects that advance the science of TMDL development and watershed management through the provision of technical training/information transfer, and enhancement of TMDL production efficiencies. The specific project topic areas include: Assessment and TMDL Workshops, Tools, Incentives, and Products Training for the Watershed Approach; and Tools Incentives, and Trainings that Foster the Financing of Water Quality Protection and/or Habitat Restoration/Protection Activities on a Watershed Scale. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to support the scholarly activity of new faculty with an award designed to help initiate their independent research programs. The new Faculty Award provides an unrestricted research grant of $50,000 that is generally made before the new faculty members formally begin their first tenure-track appointment, and is based on institutional nomination. The new Faculty Award Program is open to all academic institutions in the United States of America that grant a doctoral degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering. Institutions may make only one nomination annually for the New Faculty Award Program.
The Innovations in Engineering Education, Curriculum, and Infrastructure (IEECI) program supports research which addresses three basic issues related to engineering education: 1) how students best learn the ideas, principles, and practices to become creative and innovative engineers, and how this learning is measured; and 2) research that helps the community understand how to better attract a more talented and diverse student body, in particular U.S. citizens and permanent residents, to all levels of engineering study. This would also include research to understand how to increase student interest in engineering by leveraging partnerships among engineering schools, school districts, and exemplary non-profit organizations to recruit and retain engineering students. Finally 3) this program will support projects to investigate potential models for the evaluation of and assessment of how successful teaching, advising and mentoring leads to improved retention and graduation, and ultimately, to a sound business model for engineering education. The Computer Systems Research (CSR) Program supports innovative research and education projects that: increase our understanding of large-scale and increasingly data-intensive computer systems and applications, through the creation of new knowledge needed to improve their design, use, behavior and stability; capitalize on research opportunities provided by new technologies and new classes of systems; expand the capabilities of computer systems by developing highly innovative new ways to exploit existing technologies; lead to systems software that is quantifiably more reliable, easier to use, and/or more efficient; and produce innovative curricula or educational materials that better prepare future generations of computing professionals. EPA is announcing the availability of Pollution Prevention (P2) Grants. EPA anticipates that approximately $4.1 million will be available to support P2 Grants to States, State entities, i.e., State agencies, State colleges or universities, Federally-recognized Tribes, and Intertribal Consortia in FY 2008 for prevention activities during FY 2008 - 2009. P2 Grants dollars are targeted at State and Tribal technical assistance programs that address the reduction or elimination of pollution by businesses across all environmental media: air, water and land. The mission of the NIH-funded Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (Kansas K-INBRE) grant is to strengthen the ability of Kansas researchers to compete effectively for NIH funds by building a critical mass of junior and senior investigators as well as undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Within the scientific research theme, Cell and Developmental Biology, focus areas include reproductive and embryonic development, organogenesis, developmental neuroscience, and cellular and developmental pathologies. The K-INBRE grant is up for renewal July 1, 2008. Funding is being requested in the renewal application for four new faculty to participate as Major Starter Grant Recipients. Faculty must be within 5 years of hiring and can be either tenure track or research track. Investigators who have received a research grant with direct costs of more than $50,000/year from NIH or other extramural funding agency are not eligible.
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) solicits grant applications under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to stimulate research that will define or subcategorize human lung diseases at a molecular level enabling early diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized treatment of these diseases. The measurement of whole-genome gene expression at the RNA level will be the primary approach to systematically collect molecular phenotyping data for common and rare lung diseases. In addition, this FOA encourages the integration of data from other omics approaches (e.g. genomics, epigenomics, etc.) to reinforce or validate findings from RNA expression. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits research grant applications from applicant organizations that propose to conduct tissue-based research on interstitial fibrotic lung disease and/or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Supported projects will be required to utilize lung biospecimens and data collected by the Lung Tissue Research Consortium (LTRC). The goal of this initiative is to promote tissue-based research on COPD and interstitial fibrotic lung conditions, including studies to establish proof-of-concept in humans for novel mechanisms of pathogenesis. The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute offers grants for research in Comparative Medicine which refers to research using the most appropriate animal models of diseases, toxic responses to drugs, and engineered mutations with the dual aims of increasing understanding of both human and animal physiology and of developing rational treatments for both human and animal ailments. The Principal Investigator must be from an animal health/nutrition company within the Animal Health Corridor. However, the lead institution must be a KCALSI stakeholder institution.
