The Department of Commerce established a postsecondary internship program to aid and promote experiential training activities which foster future employment opportunities within DOC and the Federal Government in general. United States Citizens enrolled as students in postsecondary accredited educational institutions, i.e., community college, undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and professional institutions will participate in onsite work experiences in DOC bureaus and offices in order to: integrate academic theory and workplace requirements, gain relevant skills and knowledge, explore federal career options, develop professional networks, and develop a greater awareness of the role of federal agencies. The program will be administered through a partnership between DOC and non profit and/or education institution's of higher education and funded by cooperative agreement(s). 7-2 High Growth Job Training Initiative Grants for the Energy Industry and Construction and Skilled trades in the Energy Industry (DOL)
Under the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative (HGJTI), DOL/ETA, announces the availability of funds for high-impact regional approaches to meet the workforce challenges of the energy industry and/or address the shortage construction and skilled trade workers needed to maintain and expand the energy industry infrastructure. The President's HGJTI is a strategic effort to prepare workers for new and increasing job opportunities in high growth, high demand, and economically vital industries and sectors of the American economy. The solutions must be developed and implemented by a strategic regional partnership, which includes leaders from the workforce investment system, business and industry, and the education and training community as well as other public and private sector partners that bring critical assets to the joint venture. The Spencer Foundation provides funding for investigations that promise to yield new knowledge about education in the United States or abroad. The Foundation funds research grants that range in size from smaller grants that can be completed within a year, to larger, multi-year endeavors. Whereas in the past the Foundation had two distinct research grant programs based on budget size, these have now been reorganized around the current areas of inquiry: a) The Relation between Education and Social Opportunity; b) Organizational Learning in Schools, School Systems, and Higher Education Institutions; c) Teaching, Learning, and Instructional Resources; and d) Purposes and Values of Education.
The Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program seeks to increase the number of qualified students entering the fields of information assurance and computer security and to increase the capacity of the United States higher education enterprise to continue to produce professionals in these fields to meet the needs of our increasingly technological society. The SFS program is composed of two tracks: The Scholarship Track provides funding to colleges and universities to award scholarships to students in the information assurance and computer security fields for the final two years of undergraduate study, or for two years of master's-level study, or for the final two years of PhD- level study. The Capacity Building Track provides funds to colleges and universities to improve the quality and increase the production of information assurance and computer security professionals. Professional development of information assurance faculty and development of academic programs can be funded under this track. This solicitation aims at introducing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate engineering education. The focus of this year's competition is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to devices and systems and/or on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. Only one proposal may be submitted by a U.S. academic institution, College/Department of Engineering or College/Department of Engineering Technology as the lead institution with the following exception: A U.S. academic institution may submit a second proposal as the lead institution, only if it is focused on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. Future military operations in urban areas likely will require unmanned systems to travel through environments with many moving objects, for example, through a crowded marketplace with hundreds of pedestrians, motorbikes, cars and animals all moving in close quarters. These operations may take place under conditions of degraded or denied GPS, preventing the systems from simply following waypoints. Current automated methods for perception and planning do not appear well suited for such travel by unmanned vehicles, working moderately well in either cluttered or dynamic scenes, but not in both simultaneously. Current perception and planning methods in some cases depends on GPS, and so break down under conditions of poor GPS coverage. The Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) requests information on research ideas and approaches that could address this technology gap. DARPA seeks this information to inform anticipated research programs on Cognitive Mobile Robots (CMR). DARPA anticipates that a Broad Agency Announcement and/or other solicitation may be posted in the months ahead. The Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS) program supports pioneering visions and transformative research agendas that explore the frontiers of networking, provide a better understanding of the dynamics of large-scale networks, expand networking capabilities and use, and help pave the way for the next generation Internet. This solicitation invites innovative, forward-looking research projects in the following five areas: Networking at the Edges (NEDG); Network Ecosystems (NECO); Aware Networking (ANET); Exploratory Networking (XPLR); and Future Internet Design (FIND). Proposals may be submitted in on of the following three categories: Small projects; Team projects; and Planning grants. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications to examine the impact of food and nutrition on prevention, care and treatment of HIV-infected and -affected women, infants, and children. The goal of this program is to further understanding of the relationship between nutrition and HIV infection. This FOA is intended to stimulate and strengthen a multidisciplinary approach to a complex, under-researched area and to form a basis for future research and clinical care. This FOA runs in parallel with a FOA of complementary scientific scope (RFA-HD-07-023) that solicits applications under the NIH Small Grant (R03) mechanism.
The Education (R25) grant mechanism is to fund a newly developed and dedicated educational course in the auditory and vestibular biological science. It is anticipated that during a five year award period, three courses will be held (2009, 2011, 2013). It is also anticipated that each year of the course will cover a breadth of knowledge in fundamental auditory/vestibular biology, including disease and disorders, and be combined with hands-on exposure to current technologies and methodologies used in auditory and vestibular research laboratories. The NIDCD is encouraging applications which will provide a special topics course in auditory and vestibular biology in an established educational environment that has a proven track record of excellence in providing 2-3 week specialized topic courses. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce strongly supports American Industry dedicated to protecting human health through testing, manufacturing and marketing of biomedical products. As scientific innovation of biomedical products begins at the lab bench, the Chamber will inaugurate a 2008 partnership with the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, a Federal government agency with the mission of promoting and encouraging new discoveries. The mission of this partnership is to recognize, through four monetary awards, one adult scientist or researcher; one current secondary school educator; and two current secondary school students who are judged to exemplify excellence in life sciences.
The Angelman Syndrome Foundation announces the availability of up to $200,000 to be awarded in support of research aimed at identifying causative factors of difficult behaviors in individuals with Angelman Syndrome and identifying effective therapeutic interventions for difficult behaviors in individuals with Angelman Syndrome. Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by deficiency of the ubiquitin protein ligase UBE3A in the brain. Highest priority will be given to pilot projects to test new ideas about effective therapy and causative factors of behaviors in individuals with Angelman syndrome.
