In the latter half of 2008, Kansas NSF EPSCoR (KNE) will submit a Research Infrastructure Improvement (RII) proposal to NSF for funding Phase VI. To develop the RII proposal, KNE is seeking proposals that will be the components of this multi-million dollar/multi-year request to NSF. This internal RFP is addressed to faculty and administrators at Kansas State University (KSU), the University of Kansas (KU), and Wichita State University (WSU). KNE will select one or more state-level Major Initiatives that define and implement a broad and integrated plan to build on existing strengths and prepare the research infrastructure necessary to compete for large NSF awards. These initiatives will address problems that are directly related to the science and technology goals of the State, with particular emphasis on building infrastructure in focus areas of Global Climate Change and Renewable Energies. Projects selected must also include a strong component that addresses sustainability after KNE funding. Enhancing cyber infrastructure will also be included in the RII proposal for Phase VI either as a component of a Major Initiative and/or separately.
As a collaborative, interagency effort, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Services (CSREES) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture invite research proposals to support high-throughput sequencing of the genomes of microorganisms (including viruses, bacteria, archaea, fungi, oomycetes, protists and agriculturally important nematodes) and to develop and implement strategies, tools and technologies to make currently available genome sequences more valuable to the user community. The sequences are expected to be available to and used by a community of investigators to address issues of scientific and societal importance. NSF 08-511
The Upjohn Institute invites submission of proposals to conduct policy-relevant research on employment issues under the 2008 Grant Program. They expect to fund research on a variety of issues related to employment policy and economic development. The Institute awards both Research grants and Mini-Grants. Grants made under the Research Grant Program are expected to result in research of a rigorous nature that is accessible and of interest to practitioners and policymakers. The research is expected to produce a book-length manuscript publishable by the Upjohn Institute. The purpose of the Mini-Grant Program, which is reserved for untenured junior faculty within six years of earning their PhD degree, is to provide flexibility to meet special funding needs that, without support, would prevent researchers from pursuing the project.
The Federal Highway Administration is soliciting proposals for research and development projects that could lead to transformational changes and revolutionary advances for transportation planning among state, regional and local transportation planning agencies in response to significant changes in the planning process and to identify new tools, techniques and approaches that respond to national transportation planning priorities. The goal of this solicitation is to support innovative, fundamental research investigating the coupled physical, chemical, and biological processes affecting the transport of subsurface contaminants at DOE sites. Applications should address hypothesis-driven research to define and/or understand the key physical, chemical, and biological processes influencing the form and mobility of DOE contaminants in the subsurface. Research projects should aim to provide the scientific basis for the development of new remediation concepts, or strategies for the long term stewardship of contaminated sites across the DOE complex. The goal of this FOA is to solicit novel research projects that would improve the understanding of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and venous disease. Applications that propose collaboration between basic and clinical investigators are strongly encouraged. Healthy Eating Research, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation supports research on environmental and policy strategies to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity, especially among low-income and racial/ethnic populations at highest risk for obesity. Findings are expected to advance RWJF's efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. Round 3 funding focuses on policy and environmental studies in four areas: 1) food pricing and economic approaches; 2) food and beverage marketing and promotion; 3) interventions and policies to increase access to affordable healthy foods in low-income communities; and 4) evaluations of other promising food-related policy and environmental strategies. 2-10 Development and Application of New Technologies to Targeted Genome-wide Resequencing in Well-Phenotyped Populations (R01) (NIH)
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) solicit grant applications under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to develop and validate a resequencing application for cost-effective, high throughput sequencing of genome-wide medical targets by assembling current and emerging technologies in the areas of DNA target capture and sequencing. The sequencing targets are primarily all exons of the 20,000 protein coding genes identified as RefSeq genes in Entrez Gene database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), which account for 1-2% of the human genome, but could include other types of functional units such as microRNA and regulatory elements. The Human and Social Dynamics (HSD) priority area fosters breakthroughs in understanding the dynamics of human action and development, as well as knowledge about organizational, cultural, and societal adaptation and change. HSD aims to increase our collective ability to: 1) understand the complexities of change; 2) understand the dynamics of human and social behavior at all levels, including that of the human mind; 3) understand the cognitive and social structures that create, define, and result from change; and 4) manage profound or rapid change, and make decisions in the face of changing risks and uncertainty. Accomplishing these goals requires multidisciplinary research teams and comprehensive, interdisciplinary approaches across the sciences, engineering, education, and humanities, as appropriate. In an effort to educate students about the risks involved with the misuse of alcohol, the National Collegiate Athletic Association has developed CHOICES, a grant program for alcohol education. Through the CHOICES program, the NCAA provides funding for NCAA member institutions and conferences to integrate athletics into campus-wide efforts to reduce alcohol abuse. CHOICES projects must partner athletics with other campus departments in the development and implementation of effective alcohol-education projects.
