This initiative, a component of the NIH Molecular Libraries (ML) Roadmap program (MLP), will support the development of new methodologies for natural products (NP) chemistry. The long-term goal is to reinvigorate the investigation of nature as a prolific source of bioactive and small molecules, with the potential to probe the roles of a wide range of proteins in cellular processes, and/or be developed into new drugs. Samples of NPs that are produced in the course of these studies will be provided to the ML Small Molecule Repository (MLSMR), for use in high through put biological screening by the Molecular Libraries Probe Production Centers Network (MLPCN). RIDGE 2000 is a community-based science initiative focused on integrated geological and biological studies of the Earth-encircling mid-ocean ridge system. Central to the RIDGE 2000 science plan is the recognition that the origin and evolution of life in deep-sea ecosystems are inextricably linked to, and perhaps an inevitable consequence of, the flow of energy and material from Earth's deep mantle, through the volcanic and hydrothermal systems of the oceanic crust, to the deep ocean. The complex linkages between life and planetary processes at the mid-ocean ridge can be understood only through tightly integrated studies that span a broad range of disciplines in geophysics, geology, geochemistry, biology and oceanography. DARPA's Strategic Technology's Office is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of technologies that enable the affordable production of a surrogate for petroleum based military jet fuel (JP-8) from agricultural or aquacultural crops that are non-competitive with food material. This current solicitation expands the scope of the BioFuels program described in BAA06-43 to additionally focus on: 1) processes for the affordable and efficient conversion of cellulosic materials to JP-8, and 2) processes for the affordable and efficient production of algal feedstock material for conversion to JP-8. The purpose of the Integrated Organic Program is to solve critical organic agriculture issues, priorities, or problems through the integration of research, education, and extension activities in two program areas: 1) Organic Transitions Program (ORG); and 2) Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI). ORG funds the development and implementation of research, extension, and higher education programs to improve the competitiveness of organic producers and producers who are adopting organic practices. OREI funds research and extension programs that enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic agricultural products. CSREES requests applications for the Integrated Research, Education and Extension Competitive Grants Program-- National Integrated Food Safety Initiative for fiscal year (FY) 2008 to support integrated, multifunctional agricultural research, extension, and education activities that address food safety priorities in the United States. The National Integrated Food Safety Initiative requests applications that address a broad spectrum of food safety concerns--from on-farm production, post-harvest processing, and distribution, to food selection, preparation, and consumption. Various models for integration will be considered for funding.
The Secondary and Two-Year Postsecondary Agriculture Education Challenge Grants (SPEC) program seeks to: a) promote and strengthen secondary education and two-year postsecondary education in agriscience and agribusiness in order to help ensure the existence in the United States of a qualified workforce to serve the food and agricultural science system; and b) promote complementary and synergistic linkages among secondary, two-year postsecondary, and higher education programs in the food and agricultural sciences in order to advance excellence in education and encourage more young Americans to pursue and complete a baccalaureate or higher degree in the food and agricultural sciences. The National Institutes of Health invites applications that propose to establish and validate novel pathways of stable, differential silencing and activation of gene expression in mammalian cells. A companion announcement using the R21 mechanism (RFA-RM-07-015), is focused on discovery of potential epigenetic marks in mammalian or non-mammalian model systems. The California Table Grape Commission seeks to encourage research projects to assess the potential benefits of table grapes to human health, using a freeze-dried powder made from fresh grapes. Research projects should be designed to provide a foundation for subsequent, large-scale studies in humans, and where appropriate, the development of pilot human studies is encouraged. This does not exclude cell or animal studies that may make a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge about grapes and health, particularly in areas such as cancer or diseases associated with aging. For the 2008 CTGC Health Research Program, two different categories of funding are available in which to address proposals: A.) Grapes and Heart Health Grant, B.) Grapes and Health (General Grant).
The Canary Foundation, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, is extending its postdoctoral fellowship program focused on studies towards development of strategies for the early detection of cancer. Research should be directed at new approaches to improve clinical methods for the detection of primary tumors and/or metastases, including, but not limited to research focused in the following areas: Minimally invasive strategies for early detection; Biomarker identification or discovery; Imaging, including novel molecular imaging strategies; Segmentation of early stage disease according to prognosis.
45-11 Research Initiation Grants and Career Advancement Awards to Broaden Participation in Biology (RIG CAA BP) (NSF)
With the goal of broadening participation to all biologists including members from groups under-represented in biology, the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) at NSF offers two funding opportunities under this solicitation: 1) Research Initiation Grants (RIG) and 2) Career Advancement Awards (CAA). Currently, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders are under-represented in biology. These grants are intended to increase the diversity of researchers who apply for and receive BIO funding to 1) initiate research programs early in their careers and 2) advance their careers by adding new approaches or directions to their on-going research programs. By providing these funding opportunities, BIO intends to further broaden participation of biological researchers who share NSF's commitment to diversity in the following ways: Expand the population of role models who will interact with an increasingly diverse student population, the workforce of the future; Increase the number of scientists at minority serving institutions actively and competitively engaged in research as independent investigators, thereby creating new research opportunities for students in under-represented groups; and Fund biological research projects that use innovative ways to attract and retain members of under-represented groups to careers in biology. ArtsLink Projects supports U.S. artists, curators, presenters and arts organizations to undertake projects in Central Europe, Russia and Eurasia. Applicants must be working with an artist or organization in that region and projects should be designed to benefit participants and audiences in both the US and the host country. In 2008, applications will be accepted from individual artists, presenters, and non-profit arts organizations working in dance, music, theater and literature.
The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) announces a fellowship program that supports advanced regional research. The program is open to U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. in fields in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences and wish to conduct research of regional or trans-regional significance. Fellowships require scholars to conduct research in more than one country, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center.
The purpose of this program is to announce the availability of fiscal year (FY) 2008 funds for a cooperative agreement to determine whether interventions designed to prevent interpersonal violence (e.g., youth violence, intimate partner violence, sexual assault) impact self-directed violence (i.e., suicidal behavior).
