Kansas NSF EPSCoR, in partnership with KTEC, is hosting a planning workshop to prepare for one or two initiatives to be submitted to the NSF in the fall of 2008. The workshop, entitled Energy, Climate and the Future: The Role of Kansas, will focus on two grand challenge areas, energy and climate, by bringing together talented researchers from across the state who are interested in collaboration and active participation in the subsequent proposal to NSF. This solicitation requests proposals to create a national Center to conduct fundamental research and education on the implications of nanotechnology for the environment and living systems at all scales. The Center will address interactions of naturally derived, incidental and engineered nanoparticles and nanostructured materials, devices and systems with the living world. Essential elements of this Center will include understanding the interactions of nonmaterial's with organisms, cellular constituents, metabolic networks and living tissues; understanding environmental exposure and bioaccumulation and their effects on living systems; and determining the biological impacts of nanomaterials dispersed in the environment. The Kansas Corn Commission is soliciting research and education proposals for FY2009. An individual may be listed as a principal investigator on only one proposal. Proposals will be accepted in the following areas: 1.) Value-Added Projects - The proposal program should be commercially significant and have the potential to use large quantities of corn. The proposal must include principal investigators from at least two disciplines plus private entity cooperation. 2.) Animal/Human Nutrition Studies - Proposals should address animal nutrition needs that will increase the utilization of corn in the livestock and poultry feeding industry in the U.S./Kansas. Human nutritional topics will be considered, if appropriate. The proposals must include principal investigators from at least two disciplines plus private entity cooperation. 3.) Marketing Extension Program and Transportation - The proposed program should include extensive educational training of corn pricing, crop disappearance/market share, crop insurance options, yield protection, farm program considerations and options in marketing available to Kansas corn producers. 4.) Production/Environmental Programs - Proposals should address cropping systems for the Kansas corn industry for the year 2008 and beyond and should focus on the most economical/efficient cropping systems with minimal impact on the environment.
The North Central Soybean Research Program (NCSRP) announces its Call for Pre-proposals for the 2008 funding year. The NCSRP Board of Directors is seeking proposals for research designed to increase soybean yield. Preference will be given to proposals outlining research designed to reduce yield loss from SCN, Phytophthora sojae, and the virus complex. The NCSRP Board is seeking proposals that outline an effective region-wide grower education strategy to improve grower management skills against SCN. The board is also seeking novel research to reduce yield loss from SCN.
The Alpaca Research Foundation (ARF) was established in 1998 by the Alpaca Registry Incorporated as a non-profit organization to provide funding to qualified investigators for alpaca-related scientific research that will benefit alpaca breeders on national and international levels. ARF welcomes all proposals dealing with important aspects of alpaca health, husbandry, genetics and fiber.
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports television documentary programs of historical dramatizations that address significant figures, events or developments in the humanities and draw their content from humanities scholarship. Projects must be intended for national distribution during prime time hours, whether on public television, commercial television, or cable networks. NEH also offers support for digital companions to broadcast programs that use new and emerging technologies in creative ways to enhance the content of programs, engage audiences in new ways, and expand the distribution of broadcast programs.
DARPA would like to encourage new faculty members at institutions of higher learning to participate in its programs. This Research Announcement offers a venue by which research ideas proposed by young faculty can be sponsored and promoted within the Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) at DARPA. The CRC Program is designed to promote collaborative research in a coherent, defined project at the forefront of chemical sciences. CRC proposals will involve three or more investigators with complementary expertise. Co-investigators may include researchers with backgrounds in diverse areas of chemistry and other science and engineering disciplines appropriate to the proposed research. The use of cyber-infrastructure to enable and enhance collaborations is encouraged. Projects should be scientifically focused in areas supported by the NSF Division of Chemistry, limited in duration, and substantial in their scope and impact. The CRC Program will use preliminary proposals to identify promising projects. Full CRC proposals will be considered by invitation only, based on peer review of preliminary proposals. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) solicits R01 grant applications to develop novel technologies that will enable extremely low-cost DNA sequencing. Current technologies are able to produce the sequence of a mammalian-sized genome of the desired data quality for $5 to $10 million; the goal of this initiative is to reduce costs by at least four orders of magnitude, so that a mammalian-size genome could be sequenced for approximately $1000. Continued progress in fundamental materials and condensed matter research is increasingly dependent upon collaborative efforts among different disciplines, as well as closer coordination among funding agencies and effective partnerships involving universities, industry, and national laboratories. In addition, because of the growing interdependence of the world's economies, partnerships are important not only at the national level but from an international point of view as well. The National Science Foundation is working jointly with counterpart national, regional and multinational funding organizations worldwide to enhance opportunities for collaborative activities in materials research education between US investigators and their colleagues abroad. NSF will consider support for all appropriate research costs for the US side of such collaborations, with the expectation that funding or research organizations from the appropriate countries or regions will consider supporting the costs of the non-US participants. The Center for Engagement and Community Development solicits proposals from tenured and tenure-track faculty, full-time instructors, and KSRE faculty for projects that will lead to enhanced engagement in teaching, research, and/or outreach. These grants are intended to provide seed money to faculty who would like to incorporate engagement into their instructional, research, and/or outreach programs. Activities supported by this program should lead to a larger project concept and the submission of a proposal for external funding. Proposals should clearly outline both the short-term and the potential long-term outcomes. These grants are not intended to provide support for established areas of teaching, research or outreach, or previously funded projects.
