The DoD Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI), one element of the University Research Initiative (URI), is sponsored by the DoD research offices: the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)). The MURI program supports basic science and/or engineering research at U.S. institutions of higher education that is of critical importance to national defense. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will encourage the development of novel methods of statistical analysis of DNA sequence data in studies that aim to relate genetic variation to disease. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, designing sequencing studies and statistical methods for relating the variation to phenotype; assessing the significance of the associations; incorporating population genetic factors such as population history, admixture, and natural selection; and finding sets of variants that may include functional variants. At the time this preliminary request is being issued, the DEPSCoR FY 2008 program announcement has not been released by the DoD. This preliminary request is based on the DoD FY2007 program and the unofficial, preliminary information that has been provided by DoD. It may be necessary to modify the Kansas program if there are substantial changes in the DEPSCoR FY2008 program. Selection for proposals to be submitted as part of the Kansas submission will be based on preproposal review. Up to three individually fundable proposals will be submitted. Individual proposals must request a minimum of $350,000, including indirect costs. Proposals from individuals with research programs that are currently well-funded by DoD ($200,000 a year) will not be included in the state submission. Not only does a proposal to DEPSCoR need to be directed at the specific mission requirements for the appropriate program manager(s), it must also generate sufficient interest that a program manager actively champions it in the internal DoD selection process. Evidence of DoD interest is a necessary part of the preproposal submission.
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is soliciting applications for FY 2007 National Technical Assistance, Training, Research and Evaluation program (NTA Program) funding. Through this notice, EDA solicits applications for funding that address one or both of the following two projects: 1) Information dissemination to practitioners serving economically distressed areas; and 2) a national symposium to bring together leaders to discuss current and future trends in economic development and how to improve and implement economic development best practices. The U.S. Department of Education has issued a presolicitation notice that it intends to publish a Request for Proposals on or about July 13, 2007 for a contractor to develop an Education Clearinghouse to provide easy, one-stop access to information and resources that will assist the field in improving the teaching of American history. The primary audience for the Clearinghouse is teachers. Secondary audiences are those responsible for K-12 history curriculum or professional development for teachers, including: administrators, curriculum specialists, university faculty in history and history education, and State associations, as well as the general public. The clearinghouse will also include information on historic preservation as it relates to history education. The Department of Education also expects the Clearinghouse to become a source of original work products such as newsletters, policy briefs, issue briefs, and research briefs. The Leonard Wood Institute (LWI) is seeking research proposals from companies, non-profit organizations, universities, and government agencies. LWI intends to provide approximately $11.0 million in research funding through sub-awards for projects to be initiated and completed during FY2007-2008. Research funding was made available to LWI through a Cooperative Agreement (W911NF-07-2-0062) with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and is intended to produce useful technologies for the U.S. Army's Maneuver Support Center (MANSCEN) at Fort Leonard Wood, and other military organizations. The requested proposals will be in the form of white papers and constitute the first step in a two-step proposal process that will lead to funding awards for selected projects on or before September 14, 2007.To further the mission of enabling technology-based solutions for the Army, the Institute is soliciting white papers that propose applied research projects that address training-based approaches to improve military consequence management and related military capabilities, especially involving complex and dynamic threat environments. In particular, research is needed to produce advanced capabilities in the fields of military law enforcement, engineering, chemical-biological defense and training, mines and unexploded ordnance, and non-lethal weapons.
The Sloan Research Fellowship Program is designed to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.Candidates should be no more than six years from completion of the most recent Ph.D. and in one of the following fields: chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience, or computational and evolutionary molecular biology. The U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) awards funds to nonprofit organizations to provide training and education programs for employers and employees about safety and health topics selected by OSHA. The Susan Harwood Training Grant Program provides funds for programs to train employees and employers to recognize, avoid, and prevent safety and health hazards in their workplaces. The program emphasizes four areas: Educating employees and employers in small businesses. Training employees and employers about new OSHA standards. Training at-risk employer and employee populations. Training employees and employers about high risk activities or hazards identified by OSHA through the Department of Labor's Strategic Plan, or as part of an OSHA special emphasis program. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) invites applications for National Centers for Systems Biology. The goal of the program is to promote institutional development of pioneering research, training, and outreach programs focused on systems level analysis of biological phenomena of biomedical importance within the NIGMS mission. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites Research Project Grant (RO1) applications from institutions/organizations that propose to apply pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles to studies on the prevention of emergence of antimicrobial drug resistance. Diet and physical activity are lifestyle and behavioral factors that play a role in the etiology and prevention of many chronic diseases such as cancer and coronary heart disease. Both also play roles in preventing overweight/obesity and in maintaining weight loss. Therefore, diet and physical activity are assessed for both surveillance and epidemiological/clinical research purposes. The measurement of usual dietary intake or physical activity over varying time periods or in the past, by necessity, has relied on self-report instruments. Such subjective reporting instruments are cognitively difficult for respondents, and are prone to considerable measurement errors that may vary among population subgroups and depend on the time frame considered and the characteristics of the respondents. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-06-103, that solicits applications under the Exploratory/Developmental Grant (R21) award mechanism.
