The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Institute for Climate Change Research (NICCR) announces its interest in receiving research proposals that would improve understanding of potential effects of contemporary climate change on the structure and functioning of important terrestrial ecosystems within the United States, as well as possible feedbacks from terrestrial ecosystems to climate and atmospheric composition. NICCR divides terrestrial ecosystems into two groups: inland (not adjacent to an ocean) and coastal (adjacent to an ocean, including barrier islands). For inland terrestrial ecosystems, the main climatic changes of interest are changes in temperature and precipitation.
Education & Diversity Grants from Kansas NSF EPSCoR, are designed to enhance science, technology, and engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Kansas by supporting activities that will lead to an expanded STEM workforce or prepare a new generation for STEM careers. An Education & Diversity Grant proposal may target any level of the student population; the general public; K-12 teachers; community or four-year college faculty; or employees in the Kansas workforce; and the initiative may employ formal or informal educational methods. Priority will be given to proposals with a significant component to increase diversity by enabling participation in the EPSCoR project's activities by women and men, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities.
The Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) announces the availability of funding for the Emerging Markets Program (EMP) for fiscal year 2007. The EMP provides funding for technical assistance to assist U.S. organizations, public and private, to improve market access through generic, rather than branded, activities that can develop and promote U.S. agricultural products and/or processes in low- to middle-income countries that offer promises of emerging market opportunities. This program provides funding to graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to acquire additional skills that will broadly prepare them for professional and scientific careers in the 21st century. Through interactions with teachers and students in K-12 schools and with other graduate fellows and faculty from STEM disciplines, graduate students can improve communication, teaching, collaboration, and team building skills while enriching STEM learning and instruction in K-12 schools. Expected outcomes include improved communication, teaching, collaboration, and team building skills for the fellows; professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers; enriched learning for K-12 students; and strengthened and sustained partnerships in STEM between institutions of higher education and local school districts. The Directorate for Engineering Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering program supports the active involvement of K-12 teachers and community college faculty in engineering research in order to bring knowledge of engineering and technological innovation into their classrooms. The goal is to help build long-term collaborative partnerships between K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers, community college faculty, and the NSF university research community by involving the teachers in engineering research and helping them translate their research experiences and new knowledge of engineering into classroom activities. Partnerships with inner city schools or other high need schools are especially encouraged, as is participation by underrepresented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities. This announcement features two mechanisms for support of in-service and pre-service K-12 teachers and/or community college faculty: RET supplements to ongoing ENG awards and new RET Site awards. The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking applications from university consortia for research and development (RD) that will directly support its nuclear energy R D. A consortium is considered to have, at a minimum, a grouping of at least three institutions, set up for the common purpose that would be beyond the capabilities of a single member of the group. The primary purpose of this solicitation is to promote the development of Virtual Organizations (VO's) for the individuals whose members and resources may be dispersed globally, yet who function as a coherent unit through the use of cyberinfrastructure (CI). EVOs will extend beyond small collaborations and individual departments or institutions to encompass wide-ranging, geographically dispersed activities and groups. This program solicitation requests proposals for two-year seed awards to establish EVOs. Proposals must address the EVO organizing principle, structure, shared community resources, and research and learning goals; a vision for organizing the community, including international partners; a vision for preparing the CI components needed to enable those goals; a plan to obtain and document user requirements formally; and a project management plan for developing both a prototype implementation and a conceptual design of a full implementation. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate is soliciting applications for research projects aligned with the mission and requirements of DHS S&T. These projects should be designed to augment and complement, through international research and collaboration, the depth and breadth of homeland security science and technology research. Specifically, the S&T Directorate seeks proposals that will contribute to homeland security science and technology, including but not limited to: Evaluation of novel tools or approaches to confronting homeland security challenges; Basic research to provide data, understandings, or models that support S&T or policy decisions by the Department of Homeland Security; and S&T and operations research evaluations to support revolutionary improvements in DHS's mission and its component agencies' operations. The Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Synergistic Idea Development Award supports innovative, high impact approaches to prostate cancer research involving up to three independent, faculty-level (or equivalent) investigators who address a central problem or question in prostate cancer research from synergistic and complementary perspectives. The Synergetic Idea Development Award requires that investigators collaborate to submit a single proposal. Each partner will be recognized as a Principal Investigator (PI), and each will receive an individual award. The proposal must be supported by the unique expertise of each PI, and must clearly define the synergistic components that will facilitate and accelerate progress in a way that could not be accomplished through independent efforts. The Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program is requested Letters of Intent for two programs. The overall goal of the PCRP is to find and fund innovative, high impact research that seeks to 1) prevent prostate cancer, 2) detect prostate cancer, 3) cure prostate cancer and 4) improve the quality of life for individuals living with prostate cancer and for their families. Idea Development Awards support innovative, high-impact approaches to prostate cancer research. The PCRP seeks proposals from all areas of laboratory, preclinical, behavioral, and epidemiological research. New Investigator Awards support independent investigators within 6 years of having completed postdoctoral or fellowship training.
15-13 Short-Term Research Education Program to Increase Diversity in Health-Related Research (R25) (NIH)
The NHLBI's Short-Term Research Education Program to Increase Diversity in Health-Related Research is designed to promote diversity in undergraduate and health professional graduate student populations by providing short-term research education support to stimulate career development in cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic, and sleep disorder research. Only one application per health professional school may be submitted for a given receipt date. Although a university may have more than one Short-Term Research Education Grant Program to Increase Diversity in Health-Related Research, they may not be in the same school. The purpose of this program is raise awareness and behavioral change concerning public health issues through the use of the television media as means of accessing the television viewing public by providing 1) accurate public health information and public health issues, as well as accurate depictions of healthy living at all stages of life, to entertainment industry leadership for possible inclusion in television storylines; 2) assistance with public health outreach, including providing additional information concerning public heath topics depicted on television storylines, and assistance with public service announcements and informational short videos to be aired in conjunction with drama presentations; 3) evaluation of public health television storylines and the effect on the viewing public.
