The aim of the Human Frontier Science Program is to support research focused on complex mechanisms of living organisms; fields supported range from molecular and cellular approaches to biological functions to systems and cognitive neuroscience. Research Grants are now designed to bring together scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, bioinformatics, nanoscience, engineering and biology systems. Fellowship Programs are aimed specifically to support young scientists who wish to change their field of research either within the life sciences or across major disciplines. Scientists from all countries may participate in the Research Grant Fellowship programs.
6-4 An Interdisciplinary Approach to Examining The Links Between Social Stressors, Biodiversity and Human Health (EPA)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing to use interdisciplinary approaches to study the relationship between anthropogenic stressors (within ecosystems), changes in host and/or vector biodiversity, and infectious disease transmission. Research will focus on understanding the environmental and social factors that contribute to biodiversity change, the population dynamics of animal reservoirs and vectors of disease, biological mechanisms that influence disease transmission to humans, and the processes by which infectious diseases emerge and spread. This notice announces the availability of funds and solicits proposals for assistance agreements in the form of grants for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools (IAQTFS) Programs, Asthma projects, or an integration of both. These proposed projects must support demonstration, training, outreach and/or education grants that reduce exposure to indoor air pollutants and yield measurable environmental outcomes. With an emphasis on two-year colleges, the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program focuses on the education of technicians for the high-technology fields that drive our nation's economy. The program involves partnerships between academic institutions and employers to promote improvement in the education of science and engineering technicians at the undergraduate and secondary school levels. The ATE program supports curriculum development; professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers; career pathways to two-year colleges from secondary schools and from two-year colleges to four-year institutions; and other activities. Under the authority of the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990, EPA anticipates to award grants to support P2 grants to States and Tribes for prevention activities during FY 2007-2008. P2 Grant dollars are targeted at State and Tribal technical assistance programs to assist business and industries in identifying better environmental strategies and solutions for reducing of eliminating waste at the source across all environmental media.
The primary focus of the McGraw-Hill Companies grant making is financial literacy, and in particular, providing support to teachers through professional development to assist them in incorporating financial literacy into their daily lives and classroom instruction. The objective of their grant making focus is to bridge the gap between what people know and what they need to know with respect to personal financial skills. Their partnerships support personal empowerment and enhance self-sufficiency and provide access to information to help make informed financial decisions, understand the value of saving and investing wisely, learn how to avoid credit card debt and predatory lending. The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute is pleased to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Patton Trust Research Grants. The Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute (KCALSI) serves as the coordinating body for the Kansas City region's life science research initiatives by functioning as a facilitator, matchmaker, and potential funder of collaborative research initiatives and assisting in the commercialization of resulting intellectual property. KCALSI is targeting research in five disease focus areas: Oncology, Cardiovascular Disease, Neuroscience, Animal Health/Comparative Medicine, and Technology Applied to Biological Problems. This March of Dimes award is designed to support young scientists just embarking on their independent research careers. Research subjects appropriate for support by the March of Dimes include basic biological processes governing development, genetics, clinical studies, studies of reproductive health, environmental toxicology, and social and behavioral studies. The Office of Global Educational Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for the Turkish Student Internship Project. U.S. public and private universities may submit proposals to administer an eight-week professional development program for graduate students of education from Turkey beginning in January 2008. The focus of the program is to familiarize participants with U.S. student-centered teaching methods and the use of technology in the classroom.
Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with USAID, is issuing a request for applications for partnerships in Egypt and Jordan. HED anticipates making two awards. One award for Egypt for up to a three-year period to align business education with private sector needs; and one award for Jordan for up to a three-year period to build human capacity in natural resources.
The goals of this program are to identify models of effective campus-based alcohol and other drug prevention programs and disseminate information about these programs to other colleges and universities where similar efforts may be adopted. Applicants must provide in their application: 1) A description of an alcohol or other drug prevention program that has been implemented for at least two full academic years on the applicant's campus; 2) Evidence of the effectiveness of the program on the applicant's campus; 3) A plan to enhance and further evaluate the program during the projects period; and 4) A plan to disseminate information to assist other IHEs in implementing a similar program.
