As a collaborative, interagency effort, the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Services (CSREES) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture invite research proposals 1) to support high-throughput sequencing of the genomes of microorganisms (including viruses, bacteria, archaea, fungi, oomycetes, protists and agriculturally important nematodes) and 2) to develop and implement strategies, tools and technologies to make currently available genome sequences more valuable to the user community. In partnership with academic institutions, botanical gardens, freshwater and marine institutes, and natural history museums, the National Science Foundation seeks to enhance taxonomic research and help prepare future generations of experts. Through this Special Biennial Competition in Systematic Biology, NSF will support competitively reviewed projects that target groups of poorly known organisms for modern monographic research. Projects must train new taxonomists (two per project minimally) and must translate current expertise into electronic databases and other products with broad accessibility to the scientific community. The K-State Arthropod Genomics Center is pleased to announce the availability of funding to provide travel support to Scientists and Bioinformatics Specialists in the K-E2-80-91 State Arthropod Genomics Center to present their work at national or international meetings, or to attend specialized training workshops. Award recipients are expected to highlight the achievements of K-State scientists while establishing networks of potential collaborators. Requests for funding up to $1500 will be considered. Requests that include matching funds will be viewed favorably. Requests will be reviewed on March 1 and September 1, or until funds are expended. Funding is available for projects only. A project my consist of one or more specific events or activities; it may be a part of an applicant's regular season of activities. Organizations that undertake a single short-term project in a year--a ten-day jazz festival, for example--could apply for that event, or they could identify certain components (such as the presentation of a key artist and the associated activities) as their project. Organizations may apply for any or all phases of a project, from its planning through its implementation. A project does not have to be new. Excellent existing projects can be just as competitive as new activities. Projects do not need to be large. The Arts Endowment welcomes small projects that can make a difference in a community or field. The Office of High Energy Physics (HEP), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving applications for basic Research and Development projects relevant to the development and design of experimental approaches that can discover the nature of the Dark Energy that permeates the universe. As part of a two-phase Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) is seeking research grant applications to further our understanding of the effects of child and adolescent alcohol use on the developing human brain. We now know that the brain continues to develop into a person's twenties with dramatic changes in structure and function coincident with a period of life during which most youth initiate and escalate their consumption of alcohol. This FOA calls for applications to propose and test the feasibility of research study designs addressing the following fundamental questions about the impacts of child and adolescent consumption on the developing brain: 1) what are the effects (both long and shorter-term) of alcohol exposure on the developing brain; 2) what is the effect of timing, dose and duration of alcohol exposure on brain development; and 3) to what extent do these effects resolve or persist. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will support the first phase of a two-stage program to expand understanding of the underlying mechanisms of immunity to viral infection and vaccination. The first phase awarded in the fiscal year 2007 will use R21 exploratory/developmental grants to address key questions related to viral immunity. The second phase, planned for award in the fiscal year 2009, will support a substantially larger effort involving collaborative teams funded through U01 and U19 single and multiple project cooperative agreement grants. Tinker Foundation institutional grants are awarded to organizations and institutions that promote the interchange and exchange of information within the community of those concerned with the affairs of Spain, Portugal, Ibero-America and Antarctica. (For the Foundation's purposes, Ibero-America is defined as the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere.) Programmatically, the Foundation funds projects addressing environmental policy, economic policy or governance issues. Projects should have a strong public policy component, offer innovative solutions to problems facing these regions, and incorporate new mechanisms for addressing these programmatic areas.
The ultimate goal of this program announcement is to encourage the development of health research that integrates knowledge from the biomedical and social sciences. This announcement invites applications to a) elucidate basic social and cultural constructs and processes used in the health research; b) clarify social and cultural factors in the etiology and consequences of health and illness; c) link basic research to practice for improving prevention, treatment, health services, and dissemination; and d) explore ethical issues in social and cultural research related to health.
