The KSU Research Foundation is sponsoring an Innovation Exchange forum to provide an opportunity for the research community at K-State to meet colleagues and explore collaborative opportunities for innovation and commercialization. This forum is in conjunction with the annual meeting of KansasBio which is focused on enhancing the business and research climate and working with leaders across the state to attract and retain bioscience talent, companies and funding. The forum starts at 3:30 and includes a talk by Dr. Bill Neaves, President & CEO, Stowers Institute, followed by a Networking Reception/Poster Review in the Alumni Center's Cat's Den.
39-3 Manufactured Nanomaterials: Physico-chemical Principles of Biocompatibility and Toxicity (R01) (NIH)
The primary goal of this research initiative is to encourage research on the physico-chemical interaction of manufactured nanoscale materials with mammalian systems. NIH is interested in funding research that explores dose metrics and routes of nanomaterial exposure, and the molecular, cellular and organ system response to exposure. NIOSH supports research to identify and investigate the relationships between hazardous working conditions and associated occupational diseases and injuries; to develop more sensitive means of evaluating hazards at work sites, as well as methods for measuring early markers of adverse health effects and injuries; to develop new protective equipment, engineering control technology, and work practices to reduce the risks of occupational hazards; and to evaluate the technical feasibility or application of a new or improved occupational safety and health procedure, method, technique, or system. EPA is interested in funding research on the possible risks and exposure routes of newly produced chemicals and materials at the nanoscale. RFA-ES-06-008 (NIHG 9/29/06)
The program seeks to broaden the participation of girls and women in all fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by supporting research, dissemination of research, and extension services in education that will lead to a larger and more diverse domestic science and engineering workforce. Typical projects will contribute to the knowledge base addressing gender-related differences in learning and in the educational experiences that affect student interest, performance, and choice of careers; and how pedagogical approaches and teaching styles, curriculum, student services, and institutional culture contribute to causing or closing gender gaps that persist in certain fields. CSREES requests applications for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program-- National Integrated Food Safety Initiative for fiscal year 2007 to support integrated, multifunctional agricultural research, extension, and education activities that address food safety priorities in the United States. The National Integrated Food Safety Initiative requests integrated research, education, and extension applications that address a broad spectrum of food safety concerns from on-farm production, post-harvest processing, and distribution, to food selection, preparation, and consumption. Various models for integration of applied research, education, and extension will be considered for funding. The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) requests applications for the Integrated Organic Program for fiscal year (FY) 2007 to solve critical organic agriculture issues, priorities, or problems through the integration of research, education, and extension activities in two program areas: 1) Organic Transitions Program (ORG); and 2) Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI). ORG funds the development and implementation of research, extension and higher education programs to improve the competitiveness of organic producers. OREI funds research and extension programs that enhance the ability of producers and processors who have already adopted organic standards to grow and market high quality organic food, feed, and fiber. NOAA's Office of Education (OED) is requesting applications for environmental literacy projects in support of free-choice learning. The proposed projects should support NOAA's vision which is: an informed society that uses a comprehensive understanding of the role of the ocean, coasts, and atmosphere in the global ecosystem to make the best social and economic decisions. Successful projects should reach significant segments of the U.S. population at a State, multi-state or national level. The environmental literacy messages should clearly convey how the Earth system influences a project's target audience, how the target audience is influencing the Earth system and how an environmentally literate public can make informed decisions. The NOAA Office of Education (OED) is requesting applications for environmental literacy projects in support of K-12 education. Funded projects will last between one and five years and will propose ways to expand the amount of Earth System Science taught in the classroom to improve student learning of that subject. All projects shall employ the relevant strategies articulated in the NOAA Education Plan. The Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) of the Office of Science (SC), Department of Energy (DOE), in keeping with its mission to strengthen the Nation's scientific research enterprise through the support of fundamental science and the experimental tools to perform basic research, announces its interest in receiving grant applications for basic research for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems. Areas of focus include understanding of nanoscale interactions under extreme conditions, mastering the behavior of actinides and of fission products, solution behavior under extreme conditions of radiation and temperature, and interfacial behavior under extreme environmental conditions. The NSF/DOE Partnership funds research in the fundamental physics of plasmas. The types of phenomena investigated include transport in plasmas in confined magnetic structures, non-neutral plasmas in traps, dusty plasmas in laboratory configurations, and high-field laser-plasma interactions. The NSF Cyber Trust (CT) program promotes a vision of a society in which people can justifiably rely on: computer systems to perform critical functions securely; computer systems to process, store and communicate sensitive information securely; and, a diverse, well-trained workforce able to use, develop, configure, modify and operate computer-based systems. To achieve the CT vision and simultaneously improve the Nation's cybersecurity posture, CT will support a portfolio of projects that: contribute to the cybersecurity knowledge base and advance cybersecurity technologies; address trustworthiness at all levels of system design, implementation and use; consider the social, economic, organizational and legal factors influencing the successful adoption of new cybersecurity approaches and technologies; and, build national education and workforce capacity, address undergraduate, graduate, and faculty development training. 39-12 Improved Measures of Diet and Physical Activity for the Genes and Environment Initiative (GEI) (U01) (NIH)
The goal of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to develop technologies or biomarkers to measure diet and physical activity that are reliable and valid, have low respondent burden, and are economically feasible for use in studies for free-living, diverse populations. Examples of relevant technologies for diet and physical activity assessments include: motion or physiologic sensors; scanning or other measurement devices; imaging techniques; wireless data transfer; and software tools, including database solutions. The AACR is now accepting applications for the following funding opportunities: AACR Research Fellowships are open to Postdoctoral Fellows and Clinical Research Fellows at an academic facility, teaching hospital, or research institution who will be in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of their postdoctoral training at the start of the term. AACR Career Development Awards are open to junior facility who, at the start of the term, are in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year of their first full-time appointment after completing postdoctoral studies, at an academic or medical institution. The annual AACR-Gertrude B. Elion Cancer Research Award is open to tenure-track scientists at the level of Assistant Professor, who completed postdoctoral studies or clinical fellowships no later than July 1 of the application year and ordinarily not more than five years prior to the Award year.
