The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) invites applications for the Science Education Partnership Awards (SEPA) program whose goals are to foster the development of novel programs to improve K-12 and the general public's understanding of the clinical trial process as well as the health science advances stemming from National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded clinical and basic research. The SEPA program supports the creation of innovative partnerships between biomedical and clinical researchers and K-12 teachers and schools, museum, and science center educators, media experts, and other interested educational organizations. Particular importance will be given to SEPA applications that target K-12 science educational topics that may not be addressed by existing science curricula, community-based or media activities. The National Research Initiative (NRI) Competitive Grants Program for fiscal year (FY) 2007 supports: 1) high priority fundamental and mission-linked research of importance in the biological, environmental, physical, and social sciences relevant to agriculture, food, and the environment; and 2) competitively awarded research, extension, and education grants addressing key issues of national and regional importance to agriculture, forestry, and related topics. As part of its We the People initiative, NEH invites proposals for challenge grants designed to help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for humanities activities that explore significant themes and events in American History, thereby advancing knowledge of the founding principles of the United States in their full historical and institutional context. Grants may also be used to establish or enhance endowments that generate expendable earnings for program activities. The purpose of the Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities program is to: 1) Improve results for children with disabilities by promoting the development, demonstration, and use of technology; 2) support educational media services activities designed to be of educational value in the classroom setting to children with disabilities, and 3) provide support for captioning and video description that is appropriate for use in the classroom setting. As computing becomes more important in all sectors of society, so does the preparation of a globally competitive U.S. workforce with knowledge and understanding of critical computing concepts, methodologies, and techniques. Unfortunately, despite the deep and pervasive impact of computing and the creative efforts of individuals in a small number of institutions, undergraduate computing education today often looks much as it did several decades ago. Through the CISE Pathways to Revitalize Undergraduate Computing Education (CPATH) program, NSF'S Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, (CISE) is challenging its partners--colleges, universities and other stakeholders committed to advancing the field of computing and its impact--to transform undergraduate computing education on a national scale, to meet the challenges and opportunities of a world where computing is essential to U.S. leadership and economic competitiveness across all sectors of society. CPATH will support four types of projects: Community Building (CB) Grants; Evaluation, Adoption, and Extension (EAE) Grants; Transformation (T) Grants; and CISE Distinguished Education Fellow (CDEF) Grants. Microsoft Research is seeking nominees who are advancing computing research in novel directions with the potential for high impact and who demonstrate the likelihood of becoming thought leaders of the field. This fellowship is intended to identify, recognize, and support exceptional new faculty members engaged in innovative computing research. The objective is to stimulate and support creative research by promising researchers who have the potential of making a profound impact to the state-of-the-art in their research discipline. Only one nomination per institution is allowed and the potential fellow must be nominated by the university provost's office.
Innovative Research Awards: The Johnson Cancer Center will fund "seed money" projects intended to support future grant applications. Any Cancer Center-affiliated Faculty Researcher is eligible to apply, and awards will be made on a competitive basis. Faculty Equipment Awards: The Johnson Cancer Center will provide funding for the purchase of new equipment. Travel Fellowship Program: The Johnson Cancer Center will provide funding to affiliated Faculty Scientists and trainees to pursue travel opportunities outside of attendance at meetings. The purposes of this program are to: 1) support visits to other institutions for the purpose of learning new scientific techniques, subsequently applying these techniques in K-State laboratories; 2) support new or ongoing collaborative studies that cannot be conducted without visiting colleagues at other institutions; and 3) introduce the newly learned techniques and/or research advances to other investigators at Kansas State University.
The following programs are available in the fall: Cancer Research Awards: Conducting research in a cancer-relevant laboratory can be the highlight of an undergraduate experience, allowing students to learn about cancer, the scientific method, technical approaches, and the critical analysis of results. Each year, the Johnson Cancer Center provides many awards to support such opportunities. Students choose appropriate faculty members according to research interests and then approach them about sponsoring their applications. The student and the mentor complete the application together. Graduate Student & Post-Doctoral Travel Awards: These awards are intended to support travel to professional meetings or workshops by graduate students and post-doctoral fellows of Faculty Affiliates of the Johnson Cancer Center. Individuals attending a meeting are expected to present a poster or short talk. This application is to be submitted by the mentor rather than the student or postdoc, and multiple applications from the same laboratory should be submitted together. Biology Graduate Student Travel Awards: These awards are intended to support travel to professional meetings or workshops by graduate students of the Division of Biology. Biology students are eligible without regard to research interests. This application is to be submitted by the mentor rather than the student, and multiple applications from the same laboratory should be submitted together.
The Social Science Research Council is pleased to announce a new program of fellowships and workshops for predissertation research and dissertation proposal development. The DPDF program is designed to intervene at a critical moment in the career development of graduate students in the humanities and social sciences by aiding their transition from students to researchers. The DPDF program invites interested faculty to participate as research directors leading groups of 10-12 graduate student fellows in two four-day workshops. Each group will be led by two research directors from different institutions. The Faculty Advisory Committee of the DPDF program is actively recruiting senior faculty to lead small groups of graduate fellows in two workshops (scheduled for May 17-20 and September 6-9, 2007) that frame summer predissertation research in a series of research fields. A research field refers to subdisciplinary and interdisciplinary domains with common intellectual questions and styles of research. Research fields can be topical in focus (e.g., youth and generational change, governance of empire, liberalism), transnational in scope (e.g., disporas and refugees, illicit flows or border disputes), or comparative (e.g. studies of social entitlement, urban cultures, or collective protest).
The Division of Design and Manufacturing Innovation (DMI) Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) seeks to provide supplemental funding to current awardees to support graduate students to gain experience with cyberinfrastructure tools at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The National Science Foundation (NSF), through the DMI Division in the Directorate for Engineering (ENG), announces the Cyberinfrastructure Experiences for Graduate Students (CIEG) initiative. CIEG will support 10-week summer visits by graduate students to visit the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The visits must be related to the objectives of ongoing work in current projects. The experience should promote the on-going use of cyber tools within the Ph.D. dissertation topic of the students, and help foster a generation of researchers for whom such tools are incorporated naturally into advancing the research field. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the auspices of the Office of Research and Development (ORD), National Center for Environmental Research (NCER), and its partners invite submissions under the 4th Annual P3 Awards: A National Student Design Competition for Sustainability. P3 is the next step beyond P2--pollution prevention--and focuses on the three components of sustainability: People, Prosperity, and the Planet. The P3 competition will provide grants to teams of college students to research, develop, and design solutions to challenges to sustainability.
