The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) seeks to increase the number of students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents) receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in established or emerging fields within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Type 1 proposals are solicited that provide for full implementation efforts at academic institutions. Projects may involve a single institution, collaboration with business and industrial partners, or collaboration among several institutions. An institution is allowed to submit only one Type 1 proposal or be part of only one consortium submitting a Type 1 proposal. The EPA Gulf of Mexico Program's (GMP) mission is to protect, restore, and enhance the coastal and marine waters of the Gulf and its natural habitats; to sustain living resources; to protect human health and the food supply; and to ensure the long-term use of the Gulf shores, beaches, and waters. 22-6 Leadership-Class System Acquisition - Creating a Petascale Computing Environment for Science and Engineering (NSF)
NSF's goal for high performance computing (HPC) in the period 2006-2011 is to enable petascale science and engineering through the deployment and support of a world-class HPC environment comprising the most capable combination of HPC assets available to the academic community. The petascale HPC environment will enable investigations of computationally challenging problems that require computing systems capable of delivering sustained performance 10 15 floating point operations per second (petaflops) on real applications, that consume large amounts of memory, and/or that work with very large data sets. HPC Resource Providers-- those organizations willing to acquire, deploy and operate HPC systems in service to the broad science and engineering research and education community--play a key role in the provision and support of a national HPC environment. With this solicitation, NSF requests proposals from organizations, or groups of organizations, willing to serve as a petascale HPC Resource provider, and who propose to acquire and deploy a new, state-of-the-art, petascale HPC system. Living With a Star Targeted Research and Technology solicits proposals leading to a physics-based understanding of the integral system linking the Sun to the Solar System both directly and via the heliosphere, planetary magnetospheres, and ionospheres. The NIH funded Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence grant is currently in its sixth year of operation. Its mission is to strengthen the ability of Kansas researchers to compete effectively for NIH funds by building a critical mass of junior and senior investigators as well as undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Investigators are to be supported with cutting edge technology within our scientific research theme, Cell and Developmental Biology. Focus areas include reproductive and embryonic development, organogenesis, developmental neuroscience, and cellular and developmental pathologies. We are now seeking to identify four new faculty to participate as Major Starter Grant Recipients for the next 2.5 years. The INBRE application must represent a new, unfunded project at the time of submission. Investigators who have received a research grant with direct costs of more than $50,000/year from NIH (including COBRE and INBRE grants) or another extramural funding agency are not eligible to apply.
Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences are intended to foster the development and productivity of biomedical researchers who are early in their careers and to help them make the critical transition to becoming independent investigators. The program provides five years of support to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the early years of faculty service. A U.S. or Canadian institution, including its medical school, graduate schools, and all affiliated hospitals and research institutes, may nominate up to six candidates. Candidates must have completed at least 12 months, but not more than 48 months, of postdoctoral research training by the October 3 application deadline.
The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership has announced funding opportunities for small-scale education initiatives in Southern and Midwestern states. CGP's Education Program seeks to increase awareness and understanding of Japan in these states through support of teacher training and related programs that address the needs of the K-12 student and teacher community. Priority will be given to projects that reach out to underserved schools and communities with little exposure to Japan; involve participation by individuals and organizations new to the field of K-12 education about Japan; use local resources, such as museums, higher education institutions, Japan-America Societies, World Affairs Councils, Japanese businesses, and the resident Japanese community of families, students, and professionals; and/or demonstrate innovation and potential for replication in other regions.

The foundation's primary goal is to encourage research, including community-based research, that supports and promotes social change.
