Through the Collaborative Science and Technology Network for Sustainability (CNS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) is seeking applications proposing innovative regional projects that apply science to decision-making to address a stated problem or opportunity relating to sustainability. The following areas are of particular interest: 1) identify a practical problem or opportunity relating to sustainability and explain its long-term importance or significance; 2) articulate the use of science and engineering, including data or information to be sythesized; 3) define short and long term success in terms of environmental, economic, and social measures and explain how progress will be tracked; 4) identify partners and collaborators for the project and approach for stimulating broader participation; 5) articulate a plan for transferring tools, approaches, and lessons to other states, localities, regions or industries. There are two specific application areas to be considered:
The goals of the Partnerships for Innovation Program are to: 1) stimulate the transformation of knowledge created by the research and education enterprise into innovations that create new wealth, build strong local, regional and national economies and improve the national well-being; 2) broaden the participation of all types of academic institutions and all citizens in NSF activities to meet the broad workforce needs of the national innovation enterprise and; 3) catalyze or enhance enabling infrastructure necessary to foster and sustain innovation in the long-term. A senior institutional administrator (dean or higher) at the lead institution must serve as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator. The goal of this program is to support the development of genome sequence resources that would contribute to a conceptual framework for the interpretation of the structure, function and evolution of genomes of economically important plants. Projects are solicited that focus on a biological question that is enabled by the proposed sequence resources and was unanswerable with existing resources. The purpose of the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program is to enable serious writings and works of art that exemplify the Antarctic heritage of humankind. In particular, the program seeks to increase public understanding of the Antarctic region, including the continent and the surrounding oceans, as well as the associated research and education endeavors. The Antarctic Artists and Writers Program provides opportunities for professional artists and writers to travel to Antarctica--at research stations, field camps, and aboard ships--to make the observations necessary to complete their proposed projects. 13-9 Cyberinfrastructure Training, Education, Advancement, and Mentoring for Our 21st Century Workforce (CI-TEAM) (NSF)
Information technology (IT)-enabled systems, tools, and services have had profound impact on the practice of science and engineering research and education. Integrated to create a national cyberinfrastructure, these systems, tools and services are enabling individuals, groups and organizations to advance science and engineering in ways that revolutionize who can participate, what they can do, and how they do it. To harness the full power of cyberinfrastructure, and the promise it portends for discovery, learning and innovation across and within all areas of science and engineering, requires investments in the in the preparation of a science and engineering workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to create, advance and take advantage of cyberinfrastructure over the long-term. The FY06 expanded CI-TEAM solicitation seeks two types of project proposals: the Demonstration Project is exploratory in nature and may be somewhat limited in scope and scale. The Implementation Project is generally larger in scope or scale and draws on prior experience with the activities or the teams proposed. Implementation projects that are expected to deliver sustainable learning and workforce development activities that complement ongoing NSF investment in cyberinfra-structure. The National Science Foundation (NSF) announces a solicitation on technological challenges in hybrid communications systems. This topic, with broad disciplinary research and educational activities, integrates wireless optical, and RF/microwave communications systems, for domain specific applications. The solicitation seeks proposals on novel concepts in hybrid communications systems including advanced photonic and wireless integrated circuits; new approaches and methodologies to develop architectures for hybrid networks; and new mathematical models to stimulate the performance of components, interfaces, sub-systems, systems and interfaces to advance seamless integration of wireless optical and RF/microwave communications. The Geophysics Program supports basic research in the physics of the solid earth to explore its composition, structure, and processes. Laboratory, field, theoretical, and computational studies are supported. Topics include seismicity, seismic wave propagation, and the nature and occurrence of earthquakes; the earth's magnetic, gravity, and electrical fields; the earth's thermal structure; and geodynamics. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to support the scholarly activity of new faculty with an award designed to help initiate their independent research programs. The New Faculty Award provides an unrestricted research grant of $50,000 that is generally made before the new faculty members formally begin their first tenure-track appointment, and is based on institutional nomination.An institution is allowed to make only one nomination annually.
The Horses and Humans Foundation has announced its first call for proposals for funding in 2006. The foundation invites applicants to submit proposals to fund research that provides evidence of the therapeutic effects of horses on humans. The primary goal of the foundation is to promote research that directly benefits program participants by showing them how to be more effective instructors, therapists, and facilitators. The broad research agenda includes basic research as well as clinical studies that will ultimately impact physical disabilities who are involved with equine-assisted activities.
