Limited submission programs have sponsor restrictions on the number of proposals that may be submitted by a single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which applications will be submitted. 8-1 Grant writing Workshops (KSU)

Bob Lowman, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, University of North Carolina, is offering two grant writing workshops at K-State on March 15. An introductory session, The 12 Keys to Successful Grant Writing, is from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and The Ins and Outs of Federal Funding is from 1:30-4:30 p.m, both in the Main Ballroom, K-State Union. 8-2 Combating Terrorism Technology Support Office Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) (DOD)

The TSWG conducts rapid prototype development focused on critical multi-agency and future threat counter/anti-terrorism requirements. This agency's program objectives are to provide an interagency forum to coordinate R&D requirements for combating terrorism, to sponsor R&D not otherwise being addressed by individual agencies, and to promote information transfer among the participating agencies. TSWG is interested in soliciting proposals in the following areas of combating terrorism: Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Countermeasures (CB); Explosives Detection (ED); and Physical Security (PS). 8-3 Math and Science Partnership (MSP) (NSF)

The Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program is a major research and development effort that supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. MSP projects are expected to both raise the achievement levels of all students and significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations. In this solicitation, NSF seeks to support two types of MSP projects: Institute Partnerships--Teacher Institutes for the 21st Century, especially for the science disciplines in the secondary grades and for elementary science specialists; and a focused set of Research, Evaluation and Technical Assistance (RETA) projects that directly support the work of the Institutes or engage the national disciplinary and professional societies in MSP work. 8-4 Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) (NSF)

This solicitation aims at introducing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate education. The focus is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to devices and systems and/or on the social, economic, and ethical issues that surround nanotechnology. Only one proposal may be submitted by any U.S. academic institution as the lead with the following exception: an institution may submit a second proposal as the lead institution only if it is focused on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental implications of nanoscale science and engineering; two proposals focused on these areas are not allowed. 8-5 Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) (NSF)

The Division of Research, Evaluation and Communication (REC) in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) of the National Science Foundation supports basic and applied research and evaluation that enhances science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and teaching. This solicitation calls for two types of proposals--synthesis and empirical. Synthesis Research and Evaluation Project proposals should identify areas where the knowledge base in either evaluation or research is sufficiently robust to support strong scientific claims, identify areas of importance to education research and practice, and propose rigorous methods for synthesizing findings and drawing conclusions.; Empirical Research and Evaluation Project proposals should identify areas that have the potential for advancing discovery and innovation at the frontiers of STEM learning. These proposals are expected to be based deeply in the STEM disciplines and be theoretically and methodologically strong with the potential of contributing to theory, methodology, and practice. 8-6 Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (NSF)

The Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program seeks to improve the quality of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for all undergraduate students. The program supports efforts to create new learning materials and teaching strategies, develop faculty expertise, implement education innovations, assess learning and evaluate innovations, and conduct research on STEM teaching and learning. The program supports three types of projects representing three different phases of development, ranging from small, exploratory investigations to large, comprehensive projects. 8-7 Global Development Alliance (AID)

The Agency for International Development invites concept papers and approved proposals under its annual program statement focused on forming public-private alliances to carry out international development activities. Broad categories for alliances include: agriculture, anti-corruption/governance/civil society; conflict/relief and humanitarian assistance; economic growth and trade capacity building; education; environment and energy; food security; health; information technology and urban programs. AID prefers projects that can be launched quickly and respond to critical developmental needs.

8-8 National Needs Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants Program (USDA)

This program awards grants to train students for master's and/or doctoral degrees and provide additional postdoctoral training for Fellows who have completed their doctoral degrees at colleges and universities that have demonstrable teaching and research competencies in the food and agricultural sciences. Grants are specifically intended to support fellowship programs in areas where there is a national need for the development of scientific and professional expertise. Applications are being solicited in the following Targeted Expertise Shortage Areas: 1) agricultural genomics and bioinformatics; 2) natural resources and the environment; 3) agricultural systems and natural resource engineering; 4) agricultural management and economics; 5) food science; 6) human nutrition; 7) sciences for agricultural biosecurity; and 8) training in sustainable sciences. 8-9 Multi-Spectral Aided Target Recognition (DOD)

This BAA is for the technical advancement of multi-spectral aided target recognition algorithms that will use imagery from multi-spectral infrared imaging sensors. The algorithm should be capable of performing target detection, target recognition, and multiple target tracking under a variety of background, clutter, and atmospheric conditions. The algorithms should be capable of tracking multiple targets for extended periods of time over large fields of regard, be capable of supporting rapid Wide Area Search (WAS), and the scanning of a large field of regard in excess of the sensors' nominal fields of view. 8-10 Campus Challenge Problem Solving Competition Aerial Robitic Transformer (ART) (DOD)

The Campus Challenge problem solving competition is an effort sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory's Munitions Directorate. The purpose of the competition is to solicit innovative, potentially paradigm-shifting ideas that have the potential, upon maturity, to successfully address specific real-world problems of interest to the Air Force research community. This is accomplished through direct competition, ultimately among a small number of participants. Campus Challenge is a recurring event that could feature a different selection of participants each time. The requirements for Arial Robotic Transformer (ART) are intentionally vague. 8-11 Defense Sciences Research and Technology (DARPA)

Proposers must demonstrate that their proposal is innovative and unique, that the technical approach is sound, that they have an understanding of critical technical issues and risk, and that they have a plan for mitigation of those risks. Proposers must demonstrate the potential of successful research to radically change military capability or improve national security with a clear statement of the goals of their program and a quantitative comparison with existing technology. 8-12 FAA Open Solicitation (DOT)

The FAA is soliciting proposals for research grants and cooperative agreements to pursue the long-term and short-term technical needs of civil aviation. Work performed through these proposals will also help to further objectives set forth in the FAA Flight Plan and the next generation air transportation system integrated plan. 8-14 Small Animal Imaging Resource Program (U24) (NIH)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications from extramural investigators for Small Animal Imaging Resources (SAIRs). These grants will support: a) shared imaging resources to be used by cancer investigators; b) research related to small animal imaging technology or methodology; and c) training of both professional and technical support personnel interested in the science and techniques of small animal imaging. SAIRS will enhance capabilities for conducting basic, translational, and clinical cancer research relevant to the mission of the NCI. 8-15 Intervention Research Grants to Promote the Health of People with Disabilities (NIH)

The purpose of this research program is to develop, implement, and measure the effectiveness of interventions that promote the health and wellness of people with disabilities and prevent secondary conditions across the lifespan. The work should clearly define the precise targeted populations for the intervention program, convey the capacity to identify, reach, enroll and follow this population; and measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention(s).
