The Ethics Education in Science and Engineering (EESE) program considers proposals for research and educational projects to improve ethics education in all of the fields of science and engineering that NSF supports. For this year, proposals must focus on improving ethics education for graduate students in those fields, and on ethical issues that arise in research or graduate research education in those fields, particularly in interdisciplinary or inter-institutional contexts. The Phillips Fund of American Philosophical Society provides grants for research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans, in the continental United States and Canada. Through its Geoscience Teacher Training (GEO-Teach) program, the Directorate for Geosciences at NSF will support projects designed to improve the quality of geoscience instruction, primarily at middle and high school levels. GEO-Teach projects will provide teachers with easy access to high-quality curricular materials as well as the current state of knowledge, and will implement pre-service teacher training and in-service professional development programs designed to enhance middle and high school students' understanding of and appreciation for the importance of the geosciences. DARPA seeks strong, responsive proposals from well-qualified sources for a new research and development program called GALE (Global Autonomous Language Exploitation) with the goal of eliminating the need for linguists and analysts and automatically providing relevant, distilled actionable information to military command and personnel in a timely fashion. The goal of the GALE program is to develop and apply computer software technologies to absorb, analyze and interpret huge volumes of speech and text in multiple languages. The goal of the Transfer Learning Program is to develop, implement, demonstrate and evaluate theories, architectures, algorithms, methods, and techniques that enable computers to apply knowledge learned for a particular, original set of tasks to achieve superior performance on new, previously unseen tasks. The program solicits research contributions drawn from all applicable fields, particularly artificial intelligence and cognitive science. Past experiences with small pox and more recently with anthrax and severe acute respiratory virus (SARS) has increased the need for further research to prepare for potential outbreaks. The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) announces a call for proposals for a new program of transatlantic policy research conferences. This new program will replace the Research Fellowship Program and is part of an effort to encourage greater exchange between the university and policymaking communities.
