The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Ground Water and Ecosystem Restoration Division (GWERD), is located in Ada, OK and is the site of the Environmental Research Apprenticeship Program for Pre-Baccalaureate College Students (ERAP). This Request for Proposals (RFP) seeks proposals from eligible applicants to administer and operate an apprenticeship program for pre-baccalaureate college students under the tutelage of GWERD scientists. This program provides undergraduate students with year-round research opportunities that will allow students to relate hands-on research experience with formal academic studies. The Alpaca Research Foundation (ARF) was established to provide funding to qualified investigators for alpaca-related scientific research that will benefit alpaca breeders on national and international levels.Some areas of current research interest are: Health, Husbandry, Genetics, and Fiber. The National Endowment for the Humanities invites applications for projects that aim to improve specific areas of humanities education. Curriculum development projects bring together faculty within or from cooperating institutions to design, implement and evaluate new or revised curricula that can serve as national models for humanities education. Materials projects involve collaborations among teachers and scholars to create resources such as sourcebooks and teaching guides on specific humanities topics, even interactive software and other electronic products.

The Education Department invites applications for research on approaches, programs and practices that enhance the potential of at-risk students to complete high school with the necessary skills for success in work or postsecondary education. Research should: identify systemic, instructional and/or professional development interventions and conditions associated with high school achievement and/or graduation rates, primarily via multivariate analysis of longitudinal data; develop interventions to demonstrate potential for improving student outcomes; test promising approaches under specified conditions employing accepted experimental methods, or replicate an intervention to determine its generalizability; evaluate the effectiveness of approaches at scale; or develop and validate diagnostic assessments, progress-monitoring instruments and outcomes measures relevant to knowledge and skills high school students are expected to acquire. The IES solicits research to improve student learning by bringing recent advances in cognitive science to bear on significant problems in education. Applicants should develop interventions, conduct efficacy and replication trials of interventions and develop and validate assessments for use in delivery settings for pre-K students through adults.

The Education Department's Institute of Education Sciences invites applications for research on school based interventions and home and community based approaches integrated with school programs to improve the academic and functional skills of adolescents and young adults with disabilities.
The U.S. Department of Energy is seeking applications for research and development projects from colleges and universities with nuclear engineering degree programs or equivalent of a minor in nuclear engineering, or licensed, operating research reactors. The purpose of these grants is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards. The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program's Fire Prevention and Safety Grant is to reach high-risk target groups in order to mitigate the high incidences of death and injuries. The Outstanding New Environmental Scientist Award is intended to identify outstanding scientists who are in the early, formative stages of their careers and who intend to make a long term career commitment to research in the mission areas of the NIEHS and assist them in launching an innovative research program focusing on problems of environmental exposures and human biology, human pathophysiology and human disease. This RFA invites grant applications for basic research on aging-related mechanisms of formation and function of adipocytes within tissues of the aging musculoskeletal system, as well as effects of those adipocytes on the function of aging bone, muscle and cartilage. Studies that lead to understanding of the mechanism(s) by which adipocytes, and parenchymal cells that exhibit storage of fat, increase in tissues of the musculoskeletal system as a result of aging, and also determine the properties and effects of adipose and adipose-like cells in these tissues are specifically requested. Projects envisioned for support should investigate mechanisms and sources of cells involved in adipogensis localized to aged musculoskeletal tissues, and as well, the properties of the increased adipose tissue and effects of increased adipogenesis on the surrounding aged musculoskeletal tissues. Washington University's Midwest Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research (MRCE) has issued a call for applications to the MRCE New Opportunities grant program which is intended to fund new components and activities of the RCEs. The funds will be applied to objectives such as: enhancing the capabilities of the Centers and the Biodefense Network, encouraging inter-Center activities, and providing additional research, development, and training opportunities. Since one of the goals for all RCEs is to develop vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics that are targeted to the Category A-C agents, projects directly related to achieving this goal will be given high priority. Projects exhibiting real novelty and genuine innovation will also be given extra consideration.
The purpose of the grants is to mobilize more Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday as a day of service in communities, to encourage people who do serve on this Holiday to make a long-term commitment to community service, and to bring people together around the common focus of service to others. Applicants must address how they will: 1) improve the lives of disadvantaged youth through engaging them in providing service to others or as recipients of service, 2) fund projects with a multi-state, national focus (10 or more states), or a comprehensive statewide initiative; 3) make a minimum of 10 subgrants or projects, 4) ensure that all subgrants or projects have significant activities that take place on or during Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekends, and 5) grow the impact of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service activities from one year to the next.
