The Kansas DEPSCoR competition has been announced, based on program deadlines and guidelines from last year. Release of the Department of Defense RFP may necessitate modifications to the Kansas program. Selection of proposals to submit to DoD will be based on review of preproposals. All preproposals must be submitted electronically. Up to five individually fundable proposals will be included in the state proposal submission to DoD. Individual proposals must request a minimum of $350,000 of funds from DoD, including indirect costs.
The Office of Naval Research is inviting preproposals for innovative technologies to improve personnel capability and performance, whether related to individual and team competencies or interaction with complex systems. The solicitation cites specific gaps for new technologies, for example, to generate the capability to reconfigure technology and workforce competencies to address rapidly changing threat scenarios and improve training in foreign languages and cultural awareness, tactical intelligence and urban operations. The Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research (FIBR) Program supports integrative research that addresses major questions in the biological sciences. FIBR encourages investigators to identify major under-studied or unanswered questions in biology and to use innovative approaches to address them by integrating the scientific concepts and research tools from across disciplines including biology, math and the physical sciences, engineering, social sciences and the information sciences. Proposers are encouraged to focus on the biological significance of the question, to describe the integrative approaches, and to develop a research plan that is not limited by any conceptual, disciplinary, or organizational boundaries. Particularly encouraged are inclusion of young scientists trained in an interdisciplinary environment or in non-biological disciplines, and partnerships with underrepresented minority serving and primarily undergraduate institutions and community colleges. The Regional Integrated Pest Management (IMP) Competitive Grants Program supports projects that develop individual pest control tactics, integrate individual tactics into an IPM system, and develop and implement extension education programs. In the North Central region, priority will be given to proposals that address one or more of the following topic areas: 1) economics or risk assessment of IPM systems; 2) Alternative pest management systems; 3) Alternative production systems; 4) Decision diagnostic tools; 5) Pest detection, identification, and/or monitoring; and 6) IPM adoption. The ACLS Fellowship Program invites research applications in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. Appropriate fields of specialization include but are not limited to: anthropology, archeology, art and architectural history, economic history, film, geography, history, languages and literatures, legal studies, linguistics, musicology, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, rhetoric and communication, sociology, and theater studies. Proposals in the social science fields listed above are eligible only if they employ predominantly humanistic approaches (e.g. economic history, law and literature, political philosophy). Proposals in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary studies are welcome, as are proposals focused on any geographic region or on any cultural or linguistic group.
The purpose of the Striving Readers program is to raise the reading achievement levels of middle and high school-aged students in Title I-eligible schools with significant numbers of students reading below grade level. The program supports new comprehensive reading initiatives or expansion of existing initiatives that improve the quality of literacy instruction across the curriculum, provide intensive literacy interventions to struggling adolescent readers, and help to build a strong, scientific research base for identifying and replicating strategies that improve adolescent literacy skills. The Office of Naval Research invites white papers and full proposals describing innovative scientific concepts on which to base future technologies that can address the threat posed by improvement explosive devices. The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate collaboration and program coordination. NSF, and specifically the Engineering Directorate, would like to encourage the development of proposals which take advantage of this MOU. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (is releasing this Announcement of Opportunity for the opportunity to conduct space science investigations through the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) mission, which is part of the Living with a Star (LWS) Geospace Program. In particular, the opportunity is to provide understanding, ideally to the point of predictability, of how populations of relativistic electrons and ions in space are formed or changed in response to the variable inputs of energy from the Sun. This PA is intended to support public mental health and/or substance abuse services research in rapidly evolving areas (e.g., changes in service systems, health care financing, policy, etc.) where opportunities for empirical study are, by their very natures, only available through expedited award of support. There are three distinguishing features of an eligible study: 1) the study's scientific value and feasibility are clear, 2) rapid review and funding are required in order for the scientific question to be answered and for the research design to be carried out, and 3) the knowledge gained from the study cannot be obtained through the regular NIH cycle of review and award.
