The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects designed especially for the purpose. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. This multi-year funding partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Made urgent by the imminent death of an estimated half of the 6000-7000 currently used human languages, this effort aims also to exploit advances in information technology. Funding will support fieldwork and other activities relevant to recording, documenting, and archiving endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples and databases. Funding will be available in the form of one to three year project grants as well as fellowships for up to twelve months. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) of the Institution of Education Sciences, the AERA Grants Program announces its Research Grants Program. The program's goals are: (1) to stimulate research on issues related to U.S. Education policy and practice using NCES and NSF data sets; (2) to improve the educational research community's firsthand knowledge of the range of data available at the two agencies and how to sue them; and (3) to increase the number of educational researchers using the data sets.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intends to release an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) Investigations in June 2005. These investigations will respond to the overall RBSP mission science objectives to provide understanding, ideally to the point of predictability of how populations of relativistic electrons and ions in space are formed or changed in response to solar variations. This grant mechanism is intended to encourage the development of new information that contributes to the understanding of the basic etiology and pathogenesis of CF. Research on the measurement of hearing, the clinical assessment of hearing disorders and the nonmedical habilitation/rehabilitation of hearing are uniquely within the province of the discipline of audiology. The profession of audiology is undergoing major transition with the introduction of the professional doctorate, the AuD degree, and the near demise of the research doctorate. However, a research culture is necessary in order for the field to continue to develop. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) strongly encourages doctoral-level audiologists who show promise as productive researchers to integrate clinical research and translational research into their career paths. The National Institutes of Health requests research grant applications to study neuroimmune molecules and mechanisms involved in regulating normal and pathological central nervous system (CNS) function. The purpose of this PA is to identify research opportunities that may help to bridge the gap in understanding how immune cells and their mediators affect brain development, function and behaviors related to cognition and mood. This includes studies of the effects of immune molecules and cells on molecular and cellular neural processes, neuronal signaling, glial-neural interactions, neural activation, and objective behavioral endpoints of relevance to mood, cognition, and motivation. The National Science Foundation announces an opportunity for methodological training by cultural anthropologists who are active researchers. The purpose is to help cultural anthropologists upgrade their methodological skills by learning a specific analytical technique which will improve their research abilities.
