Through the program for Transatlantic Cooperation in Research (TransCoop), Germany's Alexander von Humboldt Foundation encourages transatlantic collaboration among German, American, and/or Canadian researchers in the humanities, social sciences, economics and law. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results program, is seeking applications proposing innovative approaches for measuring concepts and activities of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in environmental and biological media. The basis of this request for applications is the need to determine how and to what degree human and wildlife populations are exposed to EDCs. Current and previous research is greatly improving in understanding the effects of EDCs in animals and humans. However, exposure tools are needed in order to measure concentrations and relative activities of EDC mixtures and ultimately to understand the relationships between exposure and adverse effects. 2005-STAR-H1
Researchers in the social and behavioral sciences and computer and information sciences have many important synergistic relationships. One way in which this is manifest is in the development and utilization of data. On the one hand, social and behavioral scientists find new ways to create and analyze data in their endeavors to describe human and organizational behavior. On the other hand, computer and information scientists conduct research that yields new ways to improve both domain-specific and general-purpose tools to analyze and visualize scientific data, such as improving processing power, enhanced interoperability of data from different sources, data mining, data integration, information indexing and data confidentiality protection, or what we have termed cybertools. This solicitation invites proposals for information infrastructure testbeds, each of which would include the development of the next generation of cybertools applied to data from various sources collected in two areas of research fundamental to social and behavioral scientists: organizations and individuals. The goal of this initiative is to apply recent advances in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and nanotechnology towards the development of small diameter (<5.0 mm inner diameter) functional blood vessels for clinical evaluation. The NHLBI invites applications from investigators interested in developing clinical products for vessel replacement therapy due to cardiovascular disease. This initiative will complement existing programs to apply innovative technologies, tissue engineering, and nanofabrication methods, models and novel biomaterials that overcome barriers toward the development of functional blood vessel substitutes. The Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program seeks to improve the quality of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education for all undergraduate students. The program supports three types of projects representing three different phases of development, ranging from small exploratory investigations to comprehensive projects. The CCLI program has changed substantially for FY 2006. The program has increased its emphasis on projects that build on prior work and contribute to the knowledge base of undergraduate STEM education research and practice. In addition, projects should contribute to building a community of scholars who work in related areas of undergraduate education. The Coupling, Energetics, and Dynamics of Atmospheric Regions (CEDAR) Program is a broad-based, community-initiated, upper atmospheric research program. The goal is to understand the behavior of atmospheric regions from the middle atmosphere upward through the thermosphere and ionosphere into the exosphere in terms of coupling, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics on regional and global scales. The specific goals of the CEDAR program include the study of: 1) dynamics and energetics of the upper atmosphere, with particular emphasis on the region between 60 and 150km; 2) coupling between the mesosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, exosphere, and magnetosphere; and 3) horizontal coupling between adjacent geographic regions.
