The Kansas NSF Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) has posted its Request for Proposals for Major Initiatives to be components of the state submission to NSFs Research Infrastructure Improvement Program. Major Initiative Grants (MIGs) are intended to add significant capacity to the academic research infrastructure in the Biosciences and will address Grand Challenge problems or other 21st Century problems in science by crossing discipline, institutional, sector, and state lines to develop integrated scientific research programs.

This solicitation is for research that synthesizes our understanding of the arctic system. The arctic system is a set of interconnected and interacting physical, biological, and human components and processes in the northern region influenced by the existence of perennial ice (sea ice, ice sheets, glaciers, permafrost, etc.) Research efforts supported will build on and integrate the wealth of existing data and knowledge to advance our understanding of the behavior of the arctic system or key subsets of the system and to understand the role it plays in the global system and society. The NCRR Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) program solicits applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase or upgrade commercially available instruments that cost at least $100,000. Types of instruments supported include confocal and electron microscopes, biomedical imagers, mass spectrometers, DNA sequencers, biosensors, cell sorters and NMR spectrometers, among others. For purposes of eligibility, a major user group of three or more investigators must be identified. CSREES requests applications for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program--Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) for fiscal year (FY) 2005 to develop research, education, and extension projects aimed at improving the quality of water resources in agricultural watersheds across the Nation. CEAP seeks to find projects that evaluate the effects of watershed conservation practices, especially with respect to understanding how the suite of conservation practices, the timing of these activities, and the spatial distribution of these practices throughout a watershed influence their effectiveness for achieving locally defined water quality goals. The Undergraduate Research Center (URC) Program seeks new models and partnerships with the potential 1) to expand the reach of undergraduate research to include first- and second-year college students; and 2) to enhance the research capacity, infrastructure, and culture of participating institutions, thereby strengthening a nation's research enterprise. For this program, research should be in the chemical sciences or in interdisciplinary areas supported by the chemical sciences. The Energy Department invites applications for partnerships to test and validate promising carbon sequestration techniques. Partnerships will build on the work of earlier programs to demonstrate the efficacy of sequestration by focusing on field validation tests and regional locations with the greatest promise of storing large quantities of carbon dioxide from other power plant emissions and other sources.
