This RFA requests exploratory research into the neurobiological effects of treatments for drug addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites exploratory/developmental, interdisciplinary research applications to investigate the human central nervous system effects of behavioral therapies, alone or in combination with pharmacotherapies, used for the treatment of drug abuse/addiction. A critical question that remains to be addressed is how drug addiction therapies, particulary behavioral treatments, might affect the structure and/or function of a brain altered by drugs of abuse with specific implications for consequential behavior change. The IGERT program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to the development of a diverse, globally-engaged, science and engineering workforce. Diabetes is a prototypical chronic disease that imposes a large public health burden. One of its many complications is a diabetic retinopathy (DR). Early detection of DR is an important problem because many Americans with diabetes do not get regular eye exams due mainly to distance, geography, and economic status. Studies conducted in the 1980's and 1990's demonstrated that vision loss from DR could be prevented if treatment with laser photocoagulation therapy was initiated based upon regular screening with subsequent diagnosis of retinal disease. In this Request for Applications (RFA) the NEI seeks to develop, apply and evaluate noninvasive technology that is practical, affordable, and accessible so that patients with diabetes can benefit from remote site disease screening. Each summer the National Endowment for the Humanities supports faculty development through residential seminars and institutes. These projects are designed to provide teachers from across the nation with the opportunity for intensive study of important tests & topics in the humanities. Seminars & institutes are intended to foster excellent teaching by encouraging collegial discussion of humanities topics within close-knit scholarly communities. They also promote active scholarship humanities in ways suited to teachers at all levels from grade school through college.
The National Academic Advising Association has a long history of supporting research within the academic advising field. Currently the association, through its Research Committee, has a particular interest in soliciting proposals that document the outcomes of different advising models. In addition, submissions are encouraged that are concerned with developing, conducting, and reporting of: empirical studies; evaluation or analysis of advising practices, models or systems; development, evaluation or analysis of advising-based theory; studies of the history, evolution and future of the field; empirical research related to the advising process (inter- and intra-personal dimensions); and, qualitative research on advising practices.
Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund are intended to foster the early career development of postdoctoral scientists with backgrounds in the physical/computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. Applicants are expected to draw upon their training in a scientific field other than biology to propose innovative approaches to answer important questions in the biological sciences. Examples of approaches include, but are not limited to, physical measurement or manipulation of biological phenomena, computer simulation of complex processes in physiological systems, mathematical modeling of self-organizing behavior, building probabilistic tools for medical diagnosis, developing novel imaging tools or biosensors, applying nanotechnology to manipulate cellular systems, predicting cellular responses to topological clues and mechanical forces, and developing a new conceptual understanding of the complexity of living organisms. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry (physical, theoretical, or computational), computer science, statistics, or engineering and be nominated by a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada. The SciDAC Program, the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) and the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (OASCR) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announce their interest in receiving cooperative agreement applications for the development of specific scientific simulation codes that can become components of an integrated fusion plasma simulation. These integrated fusion plasma simulation prototype codes should focus on the development of new capabilities that couple together a wider range of physical phenomena in an integrated package of simulation codes (or code suite) than is currently being done. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation seeks to further the development of scientific leadership in the field of environmental chemistry with a postdoctoral fellowship program. The spirit of this program is for research leaders in environmental chemistry, after notification of the award, to recruit excellent young Ph.D. graduates from the fields of physical, organic, inorganic, biological chemistry or associated fields in chemical engineering, and provide them with the highest caliber of research experience and education in environmental science.
Networked computers reside at the heart of systems on which people now rely, both in critical national infrastructures and in their homes, cars and offices. Today, many of these systems are far too vulnerable to cyber attacks that can inhibit their operation, corrupt valuable data, or expose private information. Cyber Trust promotes a vision of a society in which networked computer systems are: 1) more predictable, more accountable, and less vulnerable to attack and abuse; 2) developed, configured, operated and evaluated by a well-trained and diverse workforce; and 3) used by a public educated in their secure and ethical operation. To improve national cyber security and achieve the Cyber Trust vision, NSF will support a collection of projects that together: 1) advance the relevant knowledge base; 2) creatively integrate research and education for the benefit of technical specialists and the general populace; and 3) integrate the study of technology with the policy, economic, institutional and usability factors that often determine its deployment and use. The purpose of this RFA is to enhance our understanding of the effects of Type 1 diabetes on the development of new blood vessels from preexisting vessels (angiogenesis), in order to open new therapeutic avenues to treat diabetic casculopathies. This RFA seeks basic and clinical studies on the mechanisms of abnormal angiogenesis seen in the complications of diabetes in wound healing, nephropathy, neuropathy and peripheral, coronary and cerebral arterial diseases. Applications are invited from multiple investigators conducting collaborative research projects that foster sharing of expertise between the angiogenesis and diabetes fields. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing early indicators of environmentally induced disease. EPA is specifically interested in research that will develop methods and tools that can be used as indicators or predictors of environmentally induced effect or disease. These methods and tools should be useful in longitudinal molecular epidemiology studies such as the National Children's Study (NCS). The Human and Social Dynamics (HSD) priority area fosters breakthroughs in understanding the dynamics of human action and development, as well as knowledge about organizational, cultural, and societal adaptation and change. The FY 2005 competition will include three emphasis areas (Agents of Change; Dynamics of Human Behavior; and Decision Making, Risk and Uncertainty). Support will be provided for Full Research projects and for shorter-term Exploratory Research and HSD Research Community Development projects. In FY2005, an individual may participate in only one HSD proposal submitted in response to this solicitation.
