36-1 High-Growth Job Training Initiative Grants for the Health care and Biotechnology Industries (DoL)

The Employment and Training Administration (ETA), U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), announces the availability of approximately $10 million in demonstration grant funds to address labor shortages and other workforce challenges in the Health care and Biotechnology industries as identified through the President's High Growth Job Training Initiative. 36-2 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (CNCS)

The purpose of the MLK Day of Service Grants is to mobilize more Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday as a day of service in communities to bring people together around the common focus of service to others. The direct service activities in connection with the King holiday may include, but are not limited to, the following: tutoring children or adults, training mentors and tutors, feeding the hungry, packing lunches, delivering meals, stocking a food or clothing pantry, repairing a school and adding to its resources, translating books and documents into other languages, recording books for the visually impaired, restoring a public space, organizing a blood drive, registering bone marrow and organ donors, renovating low-income or senior housing, building a playground, removing graffiti and painting a mural, renovating or creating safe spaces for children who are out of school and whose parents are working, collecting oral histories of elders, running health fairs that provide health screenings, distributing immunization and health insurance information, etc. CNCS-GRANTS-091404-001 (FG 9/14/04)

36-3 Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (NIH)

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), through the Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (MRDD) Branch, invites Center Core Grant (P30) applications to advance diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and amelioration of mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The primary objective of the NICHD Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (MRDDRC) Program is to provide core support and facilities for cohesive, interdisciplinary research and research training. 36-4 Alcohol Research Center Grants (HHS)

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA) provides grant support for Alcohol Research Centers to conduct and foster interdisciplinary research on alcoholism and alcohol abuse. The Alcohol Research Centers program is interrelated with, and complementary to, all other research support mechanisms and scientific activities that comprise NIAA programs of research on the nature, causes, and consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, including diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and health services research related to prevention and treatment of alcoholism, or any other emerging areas in genomics, metabolomics, or proteomics. 36-5 Environmental Education Grants (EPA)

The Environmental Protection Agency invites proposals for education projects that promote environmental stewardship. The program will fund education programs that increase public awareness and knowledge about environmental issues and build skills to make informed decisions and take responsible action. EPA favors projects that: build capacity to develop and deliver coordinated environmental education; use environmental education as a catalyst to advance state or local education reform goals; design and implement model projects to educate the public about environmental and/or health issues in their communities through community-based organizations and print, film, broadcast or other media; educate teachers about human-health threats from environmental pollution, especially risks to children; educate teachers, faculty or informal educators about environmental issues to improve their teaching ability; educate students about environmental issues to encourage environmental careers. 36-6 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program (ED)

The Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program (GPA) Program supports overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for groups of teachers, students and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. 36-7 Support of New Musical Works (MTC)

A partnership between Meet the Composer and the National Endowment for the Arts, Commissioning Music/USA provides major national support for the commissioning and multiple performances of new musical works. Commission Music/USA supports not-for-profit performing and presenting organizations that wish to commission new works by providing financial support for composer and librettist commissioning fees, copying costs, as well as a range of support services. Applications are accepted on a rotating basis by project category. Awards for the 2005 round of Commissioning Music/USA will be for projects in the following categories only: chamber ensemble, jazz ensemble, new music ensemble, orchestra, chorus, concert band, and instrumental/vocal soloist.

36-8 Museums for America (IMLS)

Museums for America grants support the role of museums in American society: to sustain our cultural heritage; to support lifelong learning; and to be centers of community engagement. Museums for American grants are designed to be flexible. They can be used for ongoing museum activities, research and other behind-the-scenes activities, planning activities, new programs or activities, purchase of equipment or services, and other activities that will support the efforts of museums to upgrade and integrate new technologies into their overall institutional effectiveness. 36-9 Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (ED)

The purpose of the Technological Innovation and Cooperation for Foreign Information Access (TICFIA) Program is to support projects that will develop innovative techniques or programs using new electronic technologies to collect information from foreign sources. Grants will be made to access, collect, organize, preserve, and widely disseminate information on world regions and countries other than the United States that address our Nation's teaching and research needs in international education and foreign languages. 36-10 Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language Program (ED)

The Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages (UISFL) Program provides grants to strengthen and improve undergraduate instruction in international studies and foreign languages. Priorities are: Applications that (a) Require entering students to have successfully completed at least two years of secondary school foreign language instruction; (b) require each graduating student to earn two years of postsecondary credit in a foreign language or have demonstrated equivalent competence in the foreign language; or (c) in the case of a two-year degree granting institution, offer two years of postsecondary credit in a foreign language. 36-11 International Research and Studies Program (ED)

The International Research and Studies Program provides grants to conduct research and studies to improve and strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies and other international fields. Priorities are: 1) Research, surveys, studies or the development of instructional materials that are nonbiased, factually accurate and solicitous of diverse views, and that serve to enhance international understanding for use at the elementary and secondary education levels, or for use in teacher education programs; 2) The development of instructional materials that are nonbiased, factually accurate and solicitations of diverse views on the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia or the languages spoken in these regions. 36-12 Plasma Physics Junior Faculty Development Program (DoE)

The Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (OFES) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), announces its interest in receiving grant applications for support under its Plasma Physics Junior Faculty Development Program. Applications should be from tenure-track faculty investigators who are currently involved in experimental or theoretical plasma physics research and should be submitted through a U.S. academic institution. 36-13 Microsoft New Faculty Fellowship Program

Because new faculty are so vital to the future of academic computer science, the Microsoft New Faculty Fellowship Program identifies, recognizes, and supports exceptional new faculty members engaged in innovative computing research. Microsoft Research seeks nominees who are advancing computing research in novel directions with the potential for high impact, and who demonstrate the likelihood of becoming those leaders of the field. The potential Fellow must be nominated by the University Provost. No more than one nomination from the university will be accepted. An emphasis is placed on departments working on computing research areas and areas that involve the innovation application of computing. The new faculty member must hold a tenure-track faculty position, be no more than six years from the completion of their most recent PhD, and must be in their first, second, or third year as a new faculty member in their first faculty appointment. 36-14 EDMAP (DoI)

The primary objective of the EDMAP component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) is to train the next generation of geologic mappers. To do this, NCGMP provides funds for graduate and selected undergraduate students in academic research projects that involve geologic mapping as a major component. Through these cooperative agreements NCGMP hopes to expand the research and educational capacity of academic programs that teach earth science students the techniques of geologic mapping and field data analysis. 05HQPA0004 (FG 9/8/04)

36-15 Emerging Infections Programs (CDC)

The purpose of this program announcement is to provide continued support to existing Emerging Infections Programs (EIPs), or to develop new EIPs, as part of the national network. EIPs are population based centers which assess the public health impact of and respond to emerging infections. Activities of the EIPs fall into these general categories: 1) Active surveillance; 2) applied public health empidemiologic and laboratory activities; and 3) implementation and evaluation of pilot prevention/intervention project. 36-16 Developing Study Designs to Evaluate the Health Benefits of Workplace Policies and Practices (NIH)

The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention invite applications for cooperative agreements (U01) to participate in a research network that will design model protocols for intervention studies that examine the health consequences of workplace policies and practices.
