The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) invites applications for cooperative agreements to support the development of model programs for the training and education of workers engaged in activities related to hazardous materials and waste generation, removal, containment, transportation and emergency response. The major objective of this solicitation is to prevent work related harm by assisting in the training of workers in how best to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials encountered during hazardous waste operations, hazardous materials transportation, environmental restoration of contaminated facilities or chemical emergency response. 32-3 Efficacy of Interventions to Promote Research Careers (NIH)

The goal of this RFA is to support research that will test assumptions regarding the effectiveness of interventions that are intended to increase interest, motivation and preparedness for careers in biomedical research, with a particular interest in those interventions specifically designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority students entering careers in biomedical and behavioral research. Since it is unlikely that comparable interventions are applicable to students universally, the proposed research need not be restricted to underrepresented minority students. 32-4 Documenting Endangered Languages (NSF)

This multi-year funding partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports projects to develop and advance knowledge concerning endangered human languages. Made urgent by the imminent death of an estimated half of the 6000-7000 currently used human languages, this effort aims to exploit advances in information technology. Funding will support fieldwork and other activities relevant to recording, documenting, and archiving endangered languages, including the preparation of lexicons, grammars, text samples, and databases. The Education Department seeks fellowship applications under the Fulbright-Hays programs for faculty research abroad in the Far East and Western Hemisphere. 32-6 Music Archiving, Preservation, and Research Projects (Grammy)

With funding from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Foundation will award grants for music archiving, preservation, and research projects in the coming year. Grants will be awarded to organizations and individuals to support efforts that advance: 1) the archiving and preservation of the music and recorded sound heritage of the Americas and 2) research and implementation of original research projects related to music such as teaching methodology in early childhood; the impact of music study on human development; and the medical and occupational well-being of music professionals.

32-7 Research In Nanoscale Science Engineering and Technology (EPA)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD) research program, is seeking applications proposing research on nanoscale science, engineering and technology -- collectively referred to as nanotechnology -- with respect to the environment. EPA is interested in research concerning the applications of nanotechnology in three areas: environmentally benign manufacturing and processing; environmental monitoring devices and sensors; and environmental treatment and remediation technologies.

32-8 Computer Systems Research (NSF)

The Computer Systems Research (CSR) program supports innovative research and education projects that have the potential to: lead to significant improvements in existing computer systems by increasing our fundamental understanding of such systems; produce systems software that is qualitatively and quantitatively more reliable and more efficient; and/or, produce innovative curricula or educational materials that better prepare the next generation of computing professionals. The CSR program contains four topical areas: embedded and hybrid systems, parallel and distributed operating systems, advanced execution systems, and systems modeling and analysis. 32-9 Beta Cell Biology Consortium (U01) (NIH)

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases invite new U01 applications to participate in a consortium of investigators and institutions, the Beta Cell Biology Consortium (BCBC). The BCBC will work collaboratively to generate resources that will facilitate research to 1) understand how endogenous beta cells are made by studying pancreatic development, with the hope of making pancreatic islets in culture; 2) explore the potential of animal and/or human stem cells (embryonic or adult); and 3) determine the basic mechanisms underlying beta cell regeneration in the adult as a basis for producing new cellular therapies for diabetes. 32-10 Exfoliated Cells, Bioactive Food Components, and Cancer (NIH)

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites applications for new R01, R21, and R03 grants which focus on research to critically evaluate the use of exfoliated cells to monitor the physiological effects of dietary bioactive food components thought to be involved with cancer prevention. The objective is to encourage interdisciplinary collaborations between scientists engaged in research using exfoliated cells and those conducting nutrition research related to cancer prevention. 32-11 NIDDK Education Program Grants (NIH)

The Education Grant Program at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is a flexible, curriculum-driven program aimed to create educational opportunities that will attract undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to careers in areas of biomedical or behavioral research of particular interest to the NIDDK and to foster their career development. The NIDDK is especially interested in attracting students and postdoctoral fellows form scientific disciplines underrepresented in disease-oriented biomedical research such as engineering, informatics, computer science and computational sciences, and encouraging them to apply their expertise to research relevant to diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases, digestive diseases and nutrition, obesity research and prevention, and kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases. 32-12 Joint Degeneration: Mouse Models (NIH)

This announcement solicits proposals for research employing genetically defined and genetically modified mouse models to explore the biological mechanisms underlying non-inflammatory joint degeneration, or osteoarthritis. For the purpose of this initiative, osteoarthritis is distinguished from diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, in which inflammation arising from autoimmunity is the primary cause of tissue damage. In contrast, the root causes of joint degeneration in osteoarthritis remain unclear. This Program Announcement is intended to accelerate the characterization of new models and the testing of hypotheses that could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of osteoarthritis. 32-14 Direct Access to the Muslim World (Fulbright)

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State announces competition for the Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World, administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). This program will enable American colleges, universities and community colleges to enrich their international programs and courses of study by providing opportunities for direct access and intensive exposure to specialists from Muslim communities in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, and several countries in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. This Fulbright Program will support visits of between two and six weeks by scholars and professionals from abroad to American higher educational institutions that desire to enrich understanding and knowledge of Islamic societies and cultures.

32-15 Peace Research (USIP)

The U.S. Institute of Peace invites applications for research, education and training projects in selected priority areas and undesignated investigator-initiated research and education projects consistent with the institute's mission. This year's topics for the solicited grant program are: the economics of war and peace (the economics of peace-building, development and reconstruction, non-state actors, humanitarian assistance and foreign aid, and the role of education and the media); and Southeast Asia (democratization and governance, civil-military relations, ethnic and religious conflict, terrorism, small arms trade, education and the media). Under the unsolicited program, applicants may address a variety of areas, such as international conflict resolution, diplomacy, negotiation and third-party dispute resolution, among other topics.

The Education Department invites applications under Fulbright-Hays programs for full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. ED will fund research projects that focus on one or more of the following areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia and the Western Hemisphere (Canada, Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean).
