The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences awards up to fifty residential postdoctoral fellowships each year to scientists and scholars from this country and abroad who show exceptional accomplishment or promise in their respective fields. These fields include but are not limited to anthropology, art history, biology, classics, economics, education, geography, history, law, linguistics, literature, mathematical and statistical specialities, medicine, musicology, philosophy, political science, psychiatry, psychology, and sociology. The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research in the John W. Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months. The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the library's large and varied collections. Interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-lingual research is particularly welcome. Among the collections available to researchers are the world's largest law library and outstanding multi-lingual collections of books and periodicals. Deep special collections of manuscripts, maps, music, films, recorded sound, prints, and photographs are also available. Scholars who have received a terminal advanced degree within the past seven years in the humanities, social sciences or in a professional field such as architecture or law are eligible.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development (ORD) as part of its Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, is seeking applications proposing research in three areas: studies developing values, functions, and models for estimating the economic value of policy-relevant changes to ecological benefits associated with aquatic resources; studies developing or improving benefit transfer methods for ecological resources; and studies improving primary economic valuation methods.
International Planning Visit/Workshop Awards can support the initial phases of developing and coordinating integrated research and education activities with foreign partners. Support is primarily for travel and subsistence expenses; salaries and stipends are not typically supported. Individual proposals can be submitted for: 1) Planning visits to assess foreign facilities, equipment, or subjects of research, and to have detailed discussions with prospective foreign partners to finalize plans for cooperative research. Visits typically range from 7-14 days, and 2) Joining workshops designed to identify common research priorities, focused on a specific, well-defined area of research collaboration. U.S. and international co-organizers collaboratively design the agenda around a disciplinary or inter-disciplinary theme, and invite individuals who will uniquely contribute to the workshop's objectives. This program fosters interdisciplinary studies to improve our understanding of the interactions between the economic, social, biological & environmental components important to small farms and rural economic development. Applicants should propose integrated research, education and extension projects that address small farms and/or rural agricultural communities. The program's priority areas are: a) comparisons of approaches to environmental management and compliance related to the prosperity of rural communities and/or profitability of agricultural products; b) analysis of the interactions that affect high return production, processing & delivery channels, and in turn, enhance profitability of small farms; c) evaluation of the interplay between social, economic, biological and environmental factors that affect the adoption of new agricultural technology, management and/or foster rural agribusiness development; or d) identification of emerging opportunities and threats for small to medium sized farms, & associated rural communities over the next 20 years. The Research Grant Program promotes research in the social sciences and humanities that contributes to a better knowledge and understanding of Canada, and its relationship with the United States, and its international affairs. The grant is designed to assist individual scholars, or a team of scholars, in writing an article-length manuscript of publishable quality and reporting their findings in scholarly publications, thus contributing to the development of Canadian Studies in the United States.
The Division of Education programs of the National Endowment for the Humanities seeks applications for Landmarks of American History: Workshops for School Teachers & the new Landmarks of American History: Workshops for Community College Faculty. These grant opportunities are part of the We the People initiative, which is designed to enhance the teaching, study, & understanding of American history & culture. Landmarks of American History workshops bring groups of K-12 teachers or community college faculty together for intensive, one-week, residence based workshops at or near significant American historical sites. Eligible applicants include museums, libraries, cultural & learned societies, state humanities councils, colleges & universities, schools & school districts. Collaborative programs are encouraged.

The Spencer Foundation has as its primary mission, by the intent of its founder, to investigate ways in which education can be improved, around the world. The Foundation's Major Research Grants Program supports research projects requiring more than $40,000. Research projects vary widely, ranging from medium-sized studies that can be completed within a year by an individual researcher to more extensive collaborative studies that last several years.
The purpose of the Technology and Media Services for Individuals With Disabilities - Cultural Experiences for Deaf or Hard of Hearing Individuals competition is to: 1) Improve results for children with disabilities by promoting the development, demonstration, and use of technology; 2) support educational media activities designed to be of educational value to children with disabilities; 3) provide support for some captioning and video description; and 4) provide cultural experiences through appropriate nonprofit organizations. The Advanced Research and Development Activity (ARDA) initiated the Geospatial Intelligence Information Visualization (G12Vis) Advanced Research and Development Program during FY2000. The two-year Phase II of G12Vis will conclude in late FY2004. This effort addresses the two-year Phase III of G12Vis that is programmed to run from FY 2005 through FY 2006. The Geospatial Intelligence Information Visualization Program will be pursuing innovative technologies, algorithms, methods, processes, or techniques with the potential for significantly advancing the current state-of-the-art in the areas that are directly and materially related to one or more of the following Program goals: Integration and Representation of Disparate and Large Information Sources; Maximizing Visualization Effectiveness and Facilitating Visualization Use; and New Visualization Paradigms. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is announcing opportunities to participate in outreach strategies, products, and services for NASA Earth Science research, development, and applications activities. Innovative solutions for engaging the public in shaping and sharing the experience of exploration and discovery about our home planet are requested. In order to more fully meet the promise, potential and challenges of the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) and other legislation that are transforming the child welfare field, the Administration on Children, Youth and Families proposes to establish a coordinated national technical assistance network that can address the range of challenges State child welfare systems confront in delivering effective services to children, youth and families. To accomplish this, seven new cooperative agreements will be awarded to establish National Resource Centers for Child Welfare Programs. It is critically important that these national resource centers: 1) Function systematically as a network; 2) have the ability to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment; 3) deliver technical assistance in ways that best meet the needs of child welfare agencies; 4) document use of funds and the effectiveness of the services they deliver; and 5) use technology to support service delivery and knowledge of management.
