The Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) is designed to increase access to scientific and engineering equipment for research and research training in institutions of higher education, research museums and non-profit research institutions. The MRI program encourages the development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter-and/or intra-institutional use and in concert with private sector partners. The MRI program assists in the acquisition or development of major research instrumentation by institutions that is, in general, too costly for support through other NSF programs. The maintenance and technical support associated with these instruments is also supported. Proposals may be for a single instrument, a large system of instruments, or multiple instruments that share a common or specific research focus. An institution may submit up to three proposals to the MRI program, only two of which may be for purchase. 43-3 Biocomplexity in the Environment (BE): Integrated Research and Education in Environmental Systems (NSF)
This competition continues the Foundation's support of the Biocomplexity in the Environment Priority Areas and promotes comprehensive, integrated investigations of environmental systems using advanced scientific and engineering methods. By lacing biocomplexity studies in an environmental context, this competition emphasizes research with the following characteristics: (a) a high degree of interdisciplinarity; (b) a focus on complex environmental systems that includes non-humans; and (c) a focus on systems with high potential for exhibiting non-linear behavior. In FY 2004 and FY 2005, five topical areas will be emphasized: 1) Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems (CNH); 2) Coupled Biogeochemical Cycles (CBC); 3) Genome-Enabled Environmental Science and Engineering (GEN-EN); 4) Instrumentation Development for Environmental Activities (IDEA); 5) Materials Use: Science, Engineering, & Society (MUSES). The Centers for Learning and Teaching (CLT) program focuses on the advanced preparation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators, as well as the establishment of meaningful partnerships among education stakeholders, especially Ph.D.-granting institutions, school systems, and informal education performers. Its goals are to renew and diversify the cadre of leaders in STEM education; to increase the number of K-16 educators capable of delivering high-quality STEM instruction and assessment; and to conduct research into STEM education issues of national import (e.g., the nature of learning, teaching strategies, and reform policies and outcomes). The Environmental Molecular Science Institutes (EMSI) Program supports cohesive, interdisciplinary group efforts in environmental molecular science by US academic institutions and non-profit non-academic organizations. Many EMSIs include partnerships with industry, international institutions and/or national laboratories. This program will increase our fundamental, molecular-level understanding of natural and anthropogenic processes in the environment. Basic research in these areas underpins our understanding of molecular-scale phenomena in chemistry and geochemistry and informs efforts to prevent and ameliorate environmental problems caused by societal activities. An EMSI typically supports a group of six or more investigators with complementary research interests. No institution may submit more than one proposal to this competition. Air Force Research Laboratory, (AFRL/IFSD) solicits research proposals for the Advanced Decision Environment Technology (ADET) program. The American Society for Engineering Education is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2004 ONR Summer Faculty Research and Sabbatical Leave Program. The Summer Faculty Research Program provides an opportunity for college and university faculty to participate in research of mutual interest to the faculty member and professional peers at U.S. Navy laboratories. The Sabbatical Leave Program provides fellowship appointments for a minimum of one semester to a maximum of on year.
This pilot program of Undergraduate Research Centers (URCs) seeks new models and partnerships with the potential 1) to expand the reach of undergraduate research to include first- and second-year college students; and 2) to enhance the research capacity, infrastructure, and culture of participating institutions, thereby strengthening the nation's research enterprise. For this pilot program, research should be in the chemical sciences or in interdisciplinary areas supported by the chemical sciences. Projects should provide exposure to research of contemporary scientific interest that is addressed with modern research tools and methods. The National Science Foundation supports International Materials Institutes (IMI) in order to enhance international collaboration between U.S. researchers and educators and their counterparts worldwide. These Institutes advance fundamental materials research by coordinating international research and education projects involving condensed matter and materials physics; solid state and materials chemistry; and the design, synthesis, characterization, and research environment that will attract leading scientists and engineers. A critically important aspect of an IMI is its potential impact on advancing materials research on an international scale and developing an internationally competitive generation of materials researchers. Recent advances in cancer biology, molecular biology, combinatorial chemistry, and screening technology provide unprecedented opportunities for discovery of new agents for the treatment and prevention of diseases. Drug discovery can now be focused on specific molecular or regulatory sites within the diseased cell. However, before such agents can be tested and used widely in patients, safety and acceptable toxicity to critical organs must be demonstrated. This PA encourages the development, standardization, and validation of new and innovative assays that determine or predict specific organ toxicities as well as new methodology for high throughput toxicity screening that involves the use of molecular endpoints, computer modeling, proteomics and genomics. In response to growing concerns about the use of biological agents in acts of terrorism, the further clinical development of new vaccines, therapeutics, adjuvants, diagnostics, and research resources against NIAID Category A B, and C priority pathogens is a high priority. In addition, while the long-term public health consequences of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are not known, its recent emergence, ease of transmission and disease severity warrant an immediate response from the biomedical research community. This program will support further development of already identified products against NIAID Category A, B and C high priority pathogens and all stages of product development against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). CYFAR funds are intended to support the development of high quality, effective programs based on research and to document the impact of these programs on intended audiences.
