41-1 Singing For Change (SFC)

The Singing for Change (SFC) Charitable Foundation awards grants to progressive nonprofits that are working to address the root causes of social or environmental problems. The foundation was created by singer Jimmy Buffet and initially funded by contributions from his 1995 Summer Tour. Grants support a variety of areas, including: children and families--programs focused on the health, education and protection of children and families, including projects promoting self-esteem and self-sufficiency; the environment-- programs that encourage environmental awareness and teach people conservation, protection and the responsible use of natural resources; and disenfranchised groups-- projects to help people overcome social and economic barriers to education or employment, lead individuals toward self-sufficiency, demonstrate human equality and encourage people to cross boundary lines to help others.

41-2 Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers (NIH)

The general goal of the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers (OAIC) program is to increase scientific knowledge that will lead to better ways to maintain or restore independence in older persons. Specifically, NIA's goal for the OAIC program is to develop or strengthen awardee institutions' programs that focus, and sustain progress, on a key aging research area. The means by which the OAIC program seeks to achieve this goal is provision of resources to institutions to help them address key research problems, technologic limitations, and needs for trained researchers, on issues in which progress could contribute to greater independence for older persons. 41-3 Research on Mind-Body Interactions and Health (HHS)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the participating Institutes, Centers, and Offices, invite applications in support of research on mind-body interactions and health. Mind-body interactions and health refers to the relationships among cognitions, emotions, personality, social relationships, and health. Applicant institutions may request funds to conduct regular research projects (R01). A central goal of this program is to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation towards understanding the processes underlying mind-body interactions and health as well as towards the application of such basic knowledge into interventions and clinical practice in the promotion of health and prevention or treatment of disease and disabilities. 41-4 IR-4 Biopesticide Research (Rutgers)

The IR-4 Biopesticide Research Program announces a request for grant proposals for funding of efficacy research in 2004. With newer targeted conventional chemicals there is interest in resistance management to maintain the utility of those products. Therefore, IR-4 is especially interested in proposals containing biopesticides as resistance management tools, rotated with conventional products. While resistance management is an important interest, the proposal must still have a majority focus on biopesticides. Selection of treatments and experimental design should be considered to elucidate the contribution of each component to the pest control system. In addition the proposal should focus on biopesticide uses that are not currently registered.

41-5 Math and Science Partnership (MSP) (NSF)

This new solicitation continues the MSP Targeted Partnerships and adds Institute Partnerships - Teacher Institutes for the 21st Century. Continuing the MSP focus on its five Key Features, Institute Partnerships are designed especially to meet national needs for teacher leaders/master teachers and school-based intellectual leaders in mathematics and science. The new solicitation also includes a very focused MSP-Research, Evaluation and Technical Assistance (RETA) component inviting proposals that directly support the work of the Institute Partnerships. The new solicitation has a focus on the secondary grades (middle and high school), although elementary mathematics, science specialists are also included in the Institute Partnerships. 41-6 Guidelines for Selection of Speed Reduction Treatments at High-Speed Intersections (NRC)

The objectives of this project are to: 1) identify or develop treatments and 2) develop guidelines for their selection to reduce the operating speed of vehicles approaching intersections, thereby reducing the frequency and severity of crashes. For the purpose of this project, the research should focus on at-grade, signalized and unsignalized intersections with operating speeds of 45 mph or greater, and on treatments that focus on geometric design and other physical features, but also include consideration of traffic signs and pavement markings. 41-7 Microsystems Technology Office in Microelectronics, Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS), and/or Photonics Technology (DOD)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) is seeking proposals (technical and cost) for research and development in the following areas: 1) microelectronics, 2) micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), and/or 3) photonics technology. Proposals for research and development addressing the technologies that rely on heterogeneous integration across these three areas to achieve complex multifunctional systems capabilities I chip-scale packages are specifically included. Such a system might include sensors/emitters, processors, power sources, clocks, etc., that might be designed to operate under difficult conditions. Chem/Bio chips for detection of chemical or biological threats, chips that dynamically adapt to their environment, intelligent chips that filter sensor input from the outside world, or network centric enabling components are all representative of these areas of interest. 41-8 INSPACE Program (DOD)

Under the Innovative Space Payloads and Capabilities (INSPACE) Program, DARPA is soliciting proposals for the development and testing of revolutionary technology designed to enable new missions and capabilities in space. The short-term goal of this effort is to solicit designs for revolutionary spacecraft, payloads and subsystems. The long-term goal of this effort is to enable innovative missions and capabilities such as, but not limited to: on-orbit assembly of large space structures and modular spacecraft; spacecraft repositioning for rescue, retirement, or change of service areas; migration of space capabilities onto microsatellite-scale buses; establishment of large designs; novel communications concepts and other revolutionary space capabilities. 41-9 Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education (NSEE) (NSF)

This solicitation represents a comprehensive effort on the part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) to enhance nanoscale science and engineering education. Its goals are to form strong partnerships between researcher in science and engineering and those in science education; to develop effective strategies and interventions for integrating nanoscale science and engineering that will inform other emerging areas of science and engineering, into formal education in grades 7-16; and to increase public awareness of advances in nanoscale research and technology and their impact on society. Among the activities that will be supported are doctoral programs in science education, the development of instructional materials and courses for adoption and implementation in classrooms, grades 7-16, and research on the cognitive and implementation aspects of the educational interventions. The goals are carried out though partnerships involving institutions with the requisite expertise in nanoscale science and engineering and in education. To attain the overarching program goals, NSEE encompasses four independent components: A) Centers for Learning and Teaching (NCLT); B) Informal Science Education (NISE); C) Instructional Materials Development (NIMD); D) Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE). 41-10 The Role of Innate Immunity in Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases (HHS)

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases invite grant applications for research to advance our understanding of the role of the innate immune system in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Advances have been made in understanding the basic immunology of innate immunity and its interaction with adaptive immunity. The purpose of this RFA is to stimulate and encourage innovative and multidisciplinary research to translate its knowledge of innate immunity into an understanding of its role in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune rheumatic diseases. 41-11 Next Generation Grants (CNS)

The Corporation for National and Community Service announces the availability of Next Generation Grants to eligible nonprofit organizations. The purpose of these grants is to foster the next generation of national service organizations by providing seed money to help new and start-up organizations, and established organizations proposing new projects or programs, plan and implement new service programs that have the potential of becoming national in scope. These grants will fund innovative strategies to effectively engage volunteers in service, which result in measurable outcomes to beneficiaries and participants. CNS is seeking innovative models that fall under at least one of three service areas: Programs that engage individuals in an intensive commitment to service in communities (defined as serving at last 40 hours per week); volunteer programs for seniors (age 55+); and programs that connect service with education. 41-12 Resident Scholar Program (SAR)

Six fellowships will be awarded to scholars in anthropology and related disciplines whose research is complete and who need time to prepare book-length manuscripts or doctoral dissertations. Scholars are provided with a stipend up to $40,000, an apartment and office, library assistance, and other benefits during a nine-month tenure, from September 1, 2004 through May 31, 2005.

41-13 Developing Translational Research on Mechanisms of Extinction Learning (NIH)

The National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) seek to encourage the development of collaborative research projects between basic scientists studying animal models of extinction learning and clinicians focused on the treatment and prevention of anxiety and drug addiction in humans. The goal of this RFA is to promote the development of innovative pilot projects that incorporate multidisciplinary approaches to the study of extinction learning and to accelerate the development of novel pharmacological, behavioral, and cognitive therapies for anxiety and drug disorders that are marked by deficits in extinction learning and/or the inability to consolidate safety signals. 41-14 Amelia Earhart Fellowship Awards for Women (Zonta)

Zonta invites applications for the 2004-2005 academic year from qualified women for grants of $6,000 each for graduate study in aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering. Women of any nationality are eligible. To apply for the fellowship, you must meet the following minimum requirements: Have completed a bachelor's degree in a qualifying area of science or engineering closely related to advanced studies in aerospace-related science or aerospace-related engineering, and demonstrate a superior academic record with evidence of potential at a recognized university or college as verified by transcripts, recommendations and acceptance or verification by an institution of higher education with accredited courses in aerospace-related studies. Provide evidence of a well-defined research program in aerospace-related science or aerospace-related engineering as described in the application essay, research and publications.
