The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State announces a new Fulbright scholar program that will enable American colleges and universities to enrich their international programs and courses of study by providing opportunities for a rapid access and intensive exposure to specialists from Muslim communities in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The Fulbright Visiting Specialists: Direct Access to the Muslim World program will support 20-25 grants for visits of between two and six weeks by scholars and professionals from abroad to American institutions that desire to enrich understanding and knowledge of Islamic, Middle Eastern and South Asian societies and cultures. Fulbright Visiting Specialists will be drawn from the ranks of former visiting Fulbright researchers or lecturers from the Middle East, North Africa or South Asia. All disciplines will be included in the program.
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships to individuals to pursue research or study in one or more Scandinavian countries for up to one year. Awards are made in all fields. Applicants must have a well defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. The ASF considers it desirable that all candidates have at least some ability in the language of the host country, even if it is not essential for the execution of the research plan.
The Homeland Security Advanced research Projects Agency (HSARPA), the external funding arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate, intends to release its first solicitation for research opportunities soon. The Topic Area is "Detection Systems for Biological and Chemical Countermeasures." The RA solicits responses in five Technical Topic Areas (TTAs) that the DHS-S&T has identified as high priority requirements to counter potential biological and chemical attacks on the homeland. The intent of this initiative is to encourage industry-academic partnerships by making "seed" grants available for the pursuit of collaborative in vivo imaging research projects directed at cancer. Support for the exchange of scientists between industry and academia can be requested under this initiative. L'Oreal USA implements a new Women in Science Fellowship Program. The initiative will provide education and research grants to young women seeking scientific careers. Five fellowships will go to support students pursuing careers in the natural sciences, engineering, computer science and math.
