The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites applications for Cutting-Edge Basic Research Awards (CEBRA) to foster highly innovative or conceptually creative research that advances our understanding of drug abuse and addiction and how to prevent and treat them. The CEBRA is a new mechanism designed by NIDA to foster novel research approaches and represents the high priority placed by NIDA on identifying such research. It is aimed at experienced drug abuse research investigators who wish to develop or adapt new methods or techniques and at new investigators or scientists with expertise in fields other than drug abuse who wish to establish innovative programs in drug abuse research. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announces its continued interest in supporting conferences through its Large Grant Program for Conference Support. This Program is intended to complement and promote AHRQ's core research by providing a mechanism for Agency stakeholders and others to: 1) develop health services research agendas and identify strategies and mechanisms for studying them; 2) discuss and develop consensus around health services research methodological and technical issues; 3) disseminate health services research information and facilitate adoption of research findings from AHRQ-sponsored research and research training grants in the formulation or evaluation of health policy, management of health care programs, and use or purchase of health services; and 4) develop partnerships with stakeholder organizations and build their capacity to participate in research activities and use the results of health services research. 34-7 Guidelines for Selection and Application of Warning Lights on Roadway-Operations Equipment (NCHRP)
There are no widely accepted guidelines for selecting warning lights on roadway-operations equipment that consider the type of equipment, weather conditions, day- and night-time operation, color of vehicle, and other relevant factors. Research is needed to develop guidelines for use by transportation agency personnel in selecting and procuring lights that will substantially enhance motorist awareness. The objective of this research is to develop guidelines for selection and application of warning lights to improve the conspicuity and recognizability of roadway-operations equipment used for construction, maintenance, utility work, and other similar activities. The Division of Earth Science (EAR) supports research and education related to the earth's terrestrial regions, interior, and freshwater systems. Projects may employ any combination of field, laboratory, and computational studies with observational, theoretical, or experimental approaches. Support is available for research and research infrastructure through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements awarded in response to investigator-initiated proposals from U.S. universities and other eligible institutions. Human resource development and education are expected to be an integral part of most research proposals, but are also eligible for direct support. Multidisciplinary work is strongly encouraged. Projects involving disciplines outside the earth sciences will be recommended for joint support with other programs within the Foundation. ARO, together with the Advanced Research and Development Activity (ARDA), solicits research proposals for the following four categories: 1) Quantum Computing Concept Maturation proposals are for large scale, four-year combined experimental and theoretical studies of potential physical embodiments of quantum bits and quantum logic, perhaps including studies in the related fields of quantum error correction, control, decoherence, and entanglement. 2) Short-Term, Innovative Concept proposals are for smaller, short term (1-3 year) experimental or theoretical studies of novel concepts on any aspect of quantum information science related to quantum computing with the objective of addressing a specific question, developing a specific technique, performing a specific measurement, or exploring a new quantum computing concept that could engender a larger scale project in the future. 3) Quantum Algorithm proposals are for three-year studies to primarily develop new quantum computing algorithms but may also consider issues of quantum computational complexity, computability, and architectures. 4) Quantum Computing Graduate Research Fellows proposals are for three-year fellowships for graduate students who are U.S. citizens working on quantum computing for investigators funded through the ARO/ARDA quantum computing program. The objectives of this research are to develop a methodology to predict the safety performance of rural multilane highways and to prepare a chapter on rural multilane highways for inclusion in the Highway Safety Manual. Individual biomedical informatics fellowships provide support for the training of informatics scientists able to perform research into basic informatics problems or to application of informatics to any area of biomedicine, including clinical medicine, basic biomedical research, clinical and health services research, public health, professional education, and administration. Post-doctoral, pre-doctoral and, in certain specified fields, some post-baccalaureate candidates are eligible. Although a canonical set of basic courses for informatics training has not yet evolved, there is general agreement that the field is interdisciplinary, and includes, among others, components of computer science, information science, cognitive science, and knowledge of one or more domains of biomedicine. This fellowship may lead to a degree, although it is not a requirement.
