32-1 Research on the Reduction and Prevention of Suicidality (HHS)

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIHM), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute on Aging invite grant applications for research that will reduce the burden of suicidality (deaths, attempts, and ideation). While NIMH has a long-standing commitment to studying the mental health-related factors contributing to suicide risk, NIDA, NIAAA, NCI, and NIA supported research in suicidality is growing and has provided a broader perspective on the range of risk and protective factors. For this PA, mental disorders, along with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) and their respective trajectories, are of particular interest as they pertain to risk and protective factors and treatment efficacy and effectiveness for suicidality. In its Requests for Applications (RFA) the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency invites research applications in the following areas of special interest to its mission: 1) Impacts of Manufactured Nanomaterials on Human Health and the Environment, 2) Market Mechanisms and Incentives for Environmental Management, 3) Environmental Statistics Research: Novel Analyses of Human Exposure Related Data (with ACG), 4) Computational Toxicology and Endocrine Disruptors: Use of Systems Biology in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment, and 5) The Role of Air Pollutants in Cardiovascular Disease (with NIEHS). 32-3 Cancer Education and Career Development Program (NCI)

The purpose of NCI Cancer Education and Career Development Program (R25) is to train predoctoral and postdoctoral candidates in cancer research settings that are highly inter-disciplinary and collaborative. This Program requires sustained leadership, dedicated faculty time, specialized curriculum development and implementation, interdisciplinary research environments, and more than one mentor per trainee to achieve career development research and inclusive to interdisciplinary training are cancer prevention and control, nutrition, population sciences, behavioral sciences, imaging and molecular diagnostics. 32-4 University and Non-Profit Scientific and Engineering Research (DOD)

The Naval Surface Warfare Center is soliciting scientific and engineering research white papers to identify capabilities of University and Non-Profit Institutions to conduct basic research, applied research, and advanced research projects in a wide variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. 32-6 Energy Competitive Research Grants (DOE)

The Energy Department published its annual general solicitation for basic science projects across disciplines and programs and under its far-flung research programs. Broad program categories include: basic energy sciences in materials sciences and engineering, chemical sciences, geosciences and energy biosciences; high energy and nuclear physics, including high energy physics and nuclear physics and data; advanced scientific computing research, including mathematical, information and computational sciences, applied mathematics, computer science and networking; fusion sciences, including research, facilities and enabling technologies; biological and environmental research, including life sciences research, medical applications and measurement sciences; environmental remediation and climate change; and energy research analyses. 32-7 "Grand Challenge" for Basic and Applied Research in Hydrogen Storage Solicitation (DOE)

DOE is issuing a Grand Challenge to the scientific community by soliciting Applications for research, development and demonstration of hydrogen storage materials and technologies. In addition to applied research and development, Applications can include substantial basic research aimed at improving the understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of hydrogen storage in materials. This solicitation requests applications in two Categories: Category 1: Research and development to be conducted by virtual Centers of Excellence led by DOE national laboratories and including universities, industry, and/or other federal/national laboratories as partners. Focus areas are Metal hydrides, Chemical hydrides, and Carbon-based hydrogen storage materials. Only DOE national laboratories may submit joint application packages in response to Category 1. The proposed university and industry efforts must be part of those application packages. Category 2: Research and development through cooperative agreements in the following areas: New materials or technologies for hydrogen storage; Compressed and liquid hydrogen tank technologies; and Off-board hydrogen storage systems. 32-8 Low-Cost Active Warning Systems for Highway-Rail Grade Crossings (NCHRP)

Active warning systems that warn drivers of the approach of a train are beneficial but their cost limits the number that can be installed. Some low-cost active warning systems have been developed but further information on their functionality and performance is needed to facilitate their implementation. The objective of this project is to identify and assess low-cost, viable active-warning system and component designs for highway-rail grade crossings. Project 3-76B

The target date for proposal submissions to the Division of Physics that are competing for FY 2004 funds is September 24, 2003. 32-10 NIDA Neuroproteomics Research Centers (NIDA NPRCs) (NIH)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse is requesting applications for the support of Neuroproteomics Research Centers (NPRCs). These Centers should be built around scientific themes that address questions relevant to the mission of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The Centers will support already existing neuroscience research, provide training in proteomics technologies and develop new proteomics technologies. The objective of this program is to provide technical and administrative support for proteomics Centers in order to increase the accessibility of the Centers to neuroscience researchers at institutions with a demonstrated need for such a resource, to develop new or improve existing proteomics technologies that would be applied to the analysis of tissues of the nervous system and promote sharing of information with the scientific community. 32-11 The Etiology, Pathogenesis and Treatment of ALS (NIH)

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (ALSA) invite research grant applications that address the etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. There remain important gaps in our understanding of the continuum of pathogenesis, pathophysiology, treatment and prevention of ALS. Accordingly, the NINDS, VA and ALSA have formed a public/private partnership to solicit applications to support research in three general lines of investigation: causative factors, pathobiology of motor neurons and associated cell types and the diagnosis and treatment of ALS. 32-12 Biodefense Research Training and Career Development Opportunities (NIAD)

NIAID biodefense research focuses on the need for basic studies on the biology of the microbe, the host response, as well as basic and applied research aimed at the development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines against these agents. In addition, NIAID recognizes the need to enhance the areas of research resources, facilities, and biosafety. Further, it is clear that a growing cadre of highly trained investigators is needed in order to address the biodefense research agenda proposed by the NIAID. NIAID recognizes that in order to effectively conduct research on this rapidly evolving area of emerging infectious disease, new researchers will need to be trained to work with special agents, reagents, and animals necessary to pursue this line of research. In addition, expertise in a wide variety of areas including structural biology, medicinal chemistry, bioinformatics, diagnostics, and therapeutic and vaccine candidate production is needed. 32-13 Fulbright Foreign Student Conflict Resolution Program (STATE)

The Office of Academic Exchange Programs of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for the Fulbright Foreign Student Conflict Resolution Program. Proposals should develop and implement a U.S.-based graduate level academic program in conflict resolution for up to 15 participants from the Middle East and North Africa. The Bureau is seeking detailed proposals from colleges, universities, and consortia of colleges and universities that have an established reputation in the field of conflict transformation, conflict management, or conflict resolution. The proposed program should offer participants a choice between a nondegree, graduate certificate or master's degree; provide a substantive practical training component; and capstone experience.
