The State of Kansas DEPSCoR program has revised the deadlines for receipt of the FY2004 DEPSCoR proposals because of a delay in the issuance of the federal Broad Agency Announcement.

26-2 Interdisciplinary CAREER Proposals in the Molecular Biosciences and the Physical and Mathematical Sciences (NSF)

In the post-genomic era, the biological sciences are experiencing a major change in the scientific approaches that are needed to advance the sciences, and mathematical and physical sciences are becoming critically important. Recognizing the needs and opportunities posed by this rapidly advancing interface, particularly in the areas where the molecular biosciences and the molecular physical sciences overlap, the Divisions of Chemistry (CHE), Materials Research (DMR), Mathematical Sciences (DMS), and Physics (PHY) in the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) and the Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB) in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) encourage proposals at these interfaces and plan to collectively review proposals that involve research and education that merges the mathematical and physical sciences with the biological sciences. Successful proposals will be those that develop and use the newest quantitative approaches to research and education problems of mutual interest to both mathematical and physical scientists and biologists, while at the same time meeting the NSF merit review criteria. 26-3 Food Safety and Security Research-Rapid Methods Development (HLS)

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) is announcing the availability of research funds for FY 2003 to support research in the following four categories: 1) development of rapid analytical screening methods for the detection of pathogens that are not usually associated with food and foodborne illness at a contamination level of 100 to 10,000 microbial pathogens/gram (g) of food without pregrowth or selective enrichment; 2) development of PCR-based methods for rapid confirmatory identification of pathogens that are not usually associated with food and foodborne illness; 3) development of rapid screening methods capable of detecting a broad range of nontraditional chemical and toxin adulterants; and 4) development of improved equipment, software procedures, and/or methods for determining radionuclide contamination in foods. 26-4 Beacon Devices (DOD)

Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency/Information Exploitation Office (DARPA/IEO) are jointly soliciting concepts for innovative research and development projects. TSWG and DARPA/IXO are interested in advanced technology focused on the development of extremely small beacon devices capable of communicating low-duty factor, short-burst, low-rate data messages over very long ranges using a very small/low-power device. Such devices could be applied to various missions, including blue force tracking, combat identification, dismounted soldier tracking, vehicle and logistics tagging, and small sensor data exfiltration. 26-5 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program FY 04 (DURIP) (DOD)

The Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Fiscal Year 2004 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP), as a part of the University Research Initiative (URI). DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment. A central purpose of the DURIP is to provide equipment to enhance research-related education. Therefore proposals must address the impact of the equipment on the institution's ability to educate students, through research, in disciplines important to DoD missions. AFOSR-2003-5 (FBO 06/05/03)

26-6 Cooperative Activities in Materials Research between the National Science Foundation and the European Commission (NSF)

This program supports collaborative materials research between U.S. scientists and engineers and their counterparts in the member countries of the European Union through an implementing arrangement between the National Science Foundation and the European Commission for: 1) Cooperative activities in the field of materials sciences. NSF will support the US side of such collaborations; 2) Proposals for the development of enhanced communication among European and US materials research centers and organizations. NSF is particularly interested in developing electronic networking among centers to facilitate cooperation and interaction among materials researchers in the US and the European Union. The budget may include equipment, operating costs and coordination costs for the network; and 3) Projects with a clear relevance to basic materials phenomena, synthesis, characterization, properties, and chemical and transport materials processing. 26-7 E-Learning for Hazmat and Emergency Response (SBIR/STTR Initiative) (NIH)

The purpose of this RFA is to further the development of Advanced Technology Training (ATT) Products for the health and safety training of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) workers, emergency responders, and skilled support personnel. The major objective of the NIEHS Worker Education and Training Program is to prevent work related harm by assisting in the training of workers in how best to protect themselves and their communities from exposure to hazardous materials encountered during hazardous waste operations, hazardous materials transportation, environmental restoration of contaminated facilities or chemical/biological/radiological emergency response and clean-up. NIEHS intends to build on its program experience in environmental safety and health training by stimulating creative Small Business Innovative Research proposals to create ATT products that will support high quality health and safety training for hazardous materials workers, emergency responders, and skilled support personnel. 26-8 Mission and Science Measurement Technology (NASA)

The Office of Aerospace Technology (OAT) at NASA Headquarters has released a draft NASA Research Announcement for their Mission and Science Measurement technology program. This NRA solicits proposals in three areas of broad interest to the Office of Space Science: 1) detectors and sensors, 2) large optical systems in space, and 3) low-power microelectronics.

26-9 Molecular Anatomy of Head & Neck Cancer: A Genomic/ Proteomic Approach (NIH)

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) invites applications that foster basic and translational research aimed at deciphering the complex molecular networks involved in the development of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (HNSCCs). This Request for Applications (RFA) encourages research projects that focus on: 1) Correlation of the genomic state, gene transcription profiles, and repertoire of proteins expressed and their activities with the functional status of both normal and aberrant cells; 2) New and existing discoveries in genomics/proteomics to develop novel biomarkers for early detection of pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions which might also serve as candidate targets for therapy. 26-10 Microbial Observatories (MO) and Microbial Interactions and Processes (MIP) (NSF)

The Microbial Observatories (MO) and Microbial Interactions and Processes (MIP) activities will support research to discover and characterize novel microorganisms, microbial consortia, communities, activities and other novel properties, and to study their roles in diverse environments. The long-term goal of this activity is to develop a network of sites or microbial observatories in different habitats to study and understand microbial diversity over time and across environmental gradients. Projects supported are expected to establish or participate in an established, Internet-accessible knowledge network to disseminate information resulting from these activities. In addition, educational and outreach activities such as formal or informal training in microbial biology, and activities that will broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in microbial research and education are expected. 26-11 NLM Senior Individual Biomedical Informatics Fellowships (F38) (NIH)

NLM senior fellowships in biomedical informatics provide support for the training of experienced health professionals in informatics. Training may be for informatics research or for the application of informatics to any area of biomedicine, including, among others, clinical medicine, basic biomedical research, education, or administration. These fellowships are intended for experienced scientists, physicians, and other professionals who wish to make major changes in the direction of their careers or who wish to broaden their scientific background by acquiring new capabilities in informatics research and development. These awards will enable professionally independent individuals with at least ten years of post-graduate experience to take time from their regular professional responsibilities for the purpose of receiving training in informatics. 26-12 Tropical Disease Research Units (NIH)

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites applications for program project (P01) grants to conduct multidisciplinary research leading to the development and evaluation of new strategies to prevent and control diseases caused by protozoan and helminth parasites. Programs will focus on one of the following areas: 1) therapeutics--discovery and validation of drug targets and development of new chemotherapeutic agents for treating and preventing parasitic infections; or 2) vector control--development of new approaches for interruption of the parasite life cycle at the level of the invertebrate (vector) host. 26-13 Biological Research Collections (BRC) (NSF)

The Biological Research Collections Program provides support for biological collection enhancement, computerization of specimen-related data, research to develop better methods for specimen curation and collection management, and activities such as symposia and workshops to investigate support and management of biological collections. Biological collections supported include those housing natural history specimens and jointly curated collections such as frozen tissues and other physical samples; e.g., DNA libraries and digital images. 26-14 Understanding How Individuals Make Travel and Location Decisions: Implications for Public Transportation (NCHRP)

The objective of this research is to guide public transportation planners and marketers; multimodal transportation planners, modelers, researchers; and policy makers in understanding how travelers' choices are influenced by their larger social context. The research will employ tenets of learning theory, including social learning theory, to examine how individuals choose where to live and work and how they travel; the implications of this examination on the planning, design, and marketing of transportation systems will be reported.
