7-1 Multidisciplinary Research into Critical Infrastructure and Related Systems- Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery Regarding Disasters and Other Extreme Events (NSF)
This announcement calls for multidisciplinary proposals focusing on basic research into the mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery of societies to disasters and extreme events affecting critical infrastructure and related systems. Proposals for this announcement will be funded by: 1) The Infrastructure and Information Systems (IIS) program, in the Directorate of Engineering (ENG), Division of Civil and Mechanical Systems (CMS); 2) The Decision, Risk and Management Sciences (DRMS) program within the Directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES). Eligible research proposals must include at least one investigator from engineering and at least one investigator from a social science discipline. This NASA Research Announcement (NRA) provides an opportunity for members of the scientific community to propose interdisciplinary research in response to seven questions taken from the NASA Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) Research Strategy. These questions are: How are global ecosystems changing? What trends in atmospheric constituents and solar radiation are driving global climate? How is global sea level affected by climate change? How are variations in local weather, precipitation and water resources related to global climate variation? What are the consequences of climate and sea level changes and increased human activities on coastal regions? How well can long-term climate trends be assessed or predicted? How well can cycling of carbon through the Earth system be modeled, and how reliable are predictions of future atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane by these models? Investigations selected under this NRA will constitute the next phase of the ESE Earth Observing System Interdisciplinary Science Program (EOS/IDS). This NASA broad agency announcement, Research Opportunities in Space Science--2003, solicits proposals for supporting research and technology across a broad range of space science program elements relevant to one or more of the four defined OSS science themes, entitled Astronomical Search for Origins, Solar System Exploration, Structure and Evolution of the Universe, and The Sun-Earth Connection. Proposal due dates are scheduled starting on March 28, 2003, and continue through February 13, 2004. The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to continue the competitive National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) Shared Instrumentation Grant (SIG) Program. The objective of the program is to make available to institutions expensive research instruments that can only be justified on a shared-use basis and for which meritorious research projects are described. The SIG Program provides a cost-effective mechanism for groups of NIH-supported investigators to obtain commercially-available, technologically sophisticated equipment costing more than $100,000. Types of instrumentation supported include, but are not limited to, nuclear magnetic resonance systems, electron and confocal microscopes, mass spectrometers, protein and DNA sequencers, biosensors, x-ray diffractometers and cell sorters. The National Eye Institute (NEI) encourages the submission of investigator-initiated applications to develop novel therapeutic and pathogenetic approaches to disorders that affect ocular motility. These disorders include strabismus syndrome, myasthenia gravis, congenital fibrosis syndromes, congenital nystagmus, and other disorders that compromise eye movement in the orbit and thus limit visual acuity. This RFA is fully titled Molecular Assessment of the Structure and Function of Ecological Populations in the Sequestration/Degradation of Environmental Contaminants and is within the mission of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to promote research that will ultimately reduce the burden of human illness and dysfunction from environmental causes. This initiative is designed to encourage the research community to apply molecular approaches to assess the structure and function of ecological populations involved in the sequestration and degradation of environmental contaminants. These populations could include microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, nematodes, aquatic organisms, plants, or any other ecological population that could be used for bioremediation purposes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking cooperative agreement applications to develop, implement and disseminate effective terrorism preparedness and emergency response training and education programs. The initiative aims to enhance national security by creating and maintaining a training program for local community-based organizations to develop their capacity to deliver effective terrorism preparedness education.
