This Quantitative Systems Biotechnology solicitation seeks innovative high-risk/high-return proposals, which combine in-depth analysis of large-scale cellular biological systems, or their representations, with creative software tools for the development of computer models as well as complementary quantitative experimental approaches. ISE activities provide rich and stimulating opportunities outside formal school settings where individuals of all ages, interests, and backgrounds increase their appreciation and understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The outcome of all ISE projects is an informed citizenry that has access to the ideas of science and engineering and understands their role in enhancing their quality of life and the health, prosperity, welfare, and security of the nation. All ISE projects have as their primary audience the informal learner- from young child to senior citizen. Building on work supported under the multi-agency Digital Libraries Initiative, this program aims to establish a national digital library that will constitute an online network of learning environments and resources for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels. In FY2003, the program will accept proposals in three tracks: 1) Collections projects are expected to aggregate and manage a subset of the library's content within a coherent theme or specialty; 2) Services projects are expected to develop services which support users, collection providers, and the Core Integration effort and which enhance the impact, efficiency, and value of the library; 3) Targeted Research projects are expected to explore specific topics that have immediate applicability to collections, services and other aspects of the development of the digital library. The Geoscience Education Program considers proposals that integrate geoscience research and education. Awards are intended to facilitate the initiation or piloting of highly innovative educational activities by geoscience researchers and educators when support may not otherwise be available. Awards are intended to provide start-up or proof of concept funding to enable projects to reach a level of maturity to compete for longer-term funding from other sources. Proposals may target any educational level: 1) graduate and postdoctoral education and training (outside the framework of basic NSF research grants); 2) undergraduate education; 3) elementary and secondary education; and 4) education outside the classroom. The Energy Department's Office of Biological and Environmental Research is inviting applications under the Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research (NABIR) program to provide the fundamental science to guide cost-effective bioremediation and long-term stewardship of radionuclides and metals at hazardous waste sites. The focus of the program is on strategies leading to long-term immobilization and stabilization--not removal--of wastes to reduce risks to people and the environment. Major program elements are: biogeochemistry; biotransformation; community dynamics and microbial ecology; biomolecular science and engineering; assessment; and bioremediation and its societal implications and concerns. The CfP invites scientists to participate in the Chandra X-ray Observatory's science program with proposals for new observations, for archival research projects or for theory/modeling projects in support of understanding Chandra data.
The National Institutes of Health invite grant applications for both basic and clinical research in the areas of pathogenesis, natural history, therapy and prevention of hepatitis C. The focus of the RFA is to elucidate the mechanism(s) responsible for the acute and chronic injury caused by hepatitis C, define the factors that determine the course and long-term outcome of chronic infection, including a search for markers of fibrosis progression, and establish the basis for resistance to the current therapeutic regimens followed by focused efforts to improve the response rate with better and less toxic drugs. Since the most effective way to prevent the liver disease caused by hepatitis C is through the development of a preventive vaccine, this RFA also supports the submission of applications that aim at generating a vaccine for hepatitis C. This announcement describes a collaborative effort among the Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Institute of General Medical Sciences (National Institutes of Health), and the National Science Foundation. The intent of this interagency announcement is to provide an opportunity for an interagency granting activity in the area of metabolic engineering (ME). Proposals are invited that address enabling technologies useful for the study of metabolic processes and metabolic engineering. Three areas are of particular interest: 1) Instrumentation, sensors, new analytical tools, and new experimental methods, which facilitate the study of metabolic pathways, especially those technologies that allow the examination of individual cells; 2) Quantitative and conceptual models integrated with experimental studies that better characterize the regulation and integration of complex, interacting metabolic pathways; and 3) The use of bioinformatics to deduce the structure, function, and regulation of major metabolic pathways. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) announce the release of the Fiscal Year 2003 Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Concept Award Program Announcement. The intent of the Concept Award is to fund the exploration of an initial concept or theory that could give rise to a testable hypothesis; thus, no preliminary data are required. These awards are to encourage the exploration of untested, high-risk questions in breast cancer and are not intended to support the next step in an already established research project. The Concept Award should provide investigators that have potentially insightful ideas from disciplines and fields outside breast cancer with an entre to the breast cancer research field. The National Institutes of Health invite applications for research projects that examine biopsychosocial processes and test interventions designed to achieve long-term health behavior change and a Resource Center to provide coordination for this set of research projects. Past research has typically focused on short term behavioral change, yielding little information on how change, once achieved, is maintained over the long term. This Request for Applications (RFA) encourages investigators to expand on the current theoretical base of change processes and intervention models, as well as to consider new conceptualizations from basic research in the social and behavioral sciences. Applications must focus on important health-related behaviors already demonstrated amenable to short-term change, such as tobacco use, exercise, eating habits, alcohol and drug use, inoculation obtainment, disease screening, stress reduction, adherence to health care regimens, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk practices, bullying and abuse of others, sun exposure, and failure to use safety equipment. This Internship Program of the National Academies--consisting of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council--is designed to engage graduate and postdoctoral students in science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions among science, technology, and government. As a result, students in the fields of science, engineering, medicine, veterinary medicine, business, and law develop essential skills different from those attained in academia, which will help them make the transition from being a graduate student to a professional.
