The FIPSE Comprehensive Program emphasizes the importance of innovation and significance, collaboration, evaluation, and dissemination plans in successful grants. This year FIPSE is focusing on the need for education reform proposals that address the needs of a changing world: the dramatic rise of information technology, increasing diversity of postsecondary learners, the widespread impact of globalization, the renewed demand for accountability, and the rise of competition among postsecondary providers. The focus should be on learning: not only what students learn but also how they learn.
The Pan-American Advanced Study Institutes (PASI) Program, is a jointly supported initiative between the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Pan-American Advanced Studies Institutes are short courses of two to four weeks duration, involving lectures, demonstrations, research seminars and discussion at the advanced graduate and post-doctoral level. PASIs aim to disseminate advanced scientific and engineering knowledge and stimulate training and cooperation among researchers of the Americas in the mathematical, physical, and biological sciences, and in engineering fields. Whenever feasible, an interdisciplinary approach is recommended. NSF 03-506
Preproposals are requested for research that 1) involves plant biotechnology and 2) addresses industrial problems and opportunities related to bioenergy and/or the environment and/or health. Funding for CPBR research for 2004 may come from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA), one of the health-related agencies and/or others. Preproposals should address one or more of the identified industrial research needs or one or more of the breaking news industrial needs submitted by member companies in November, 2002.
The Upjohn Institute invites submission of proposals to conduct policy-relevant research on employment issues. The Institute offers two funding opportunities: Research Grants that lead to book-length manuscripts; and a Mini-Grant program that provides funds for innovative research papers that have special funding needs.
The Education Department's new Institute of Education Sciences is inviting applications for research projects to improve student learning by bringing advances in cognitive science and neuroscience to bear on significant education problems. IES requests applications that address basic or high-order cognitive processes and link those processes to improving important student outcomes related to such national problems as underachievement in reading, mathematics, science, writing and English language literacy. The Education Department's new Institute of Education Sciences is inviting applications for research projects that will study factors in reading comprehension that contribute to the achievement gap for students and design approaches to close the gap and measure progress. Research should address one or more of the following expected outcomes: identification of clear and specific sources of difficulty in reading comprehension that are empirically linked to low-levels of academic achievement in reading and other academic subjects; development of valid and reliable assessments of reading comprehension for grades one through 12 and adult learners that provide feedback to inform and adjust instructional practise; and design instructional interventions for comprehension difficulties that can be confirmed against valid and reliable measures of academic achievement. The Education Department's new Institute of Education Sciences is inviting applications for rigorous clinical trial-type evaluations of preschool curricula that will inform education strategies for early childhood programs. The competition will support randomized experiments of one or more curricula not currently being studied under the program. Those being studied include: Creative Curriculum; Bright Beginnings; Early Literacy and Learning Model; Ladders to Literacy; Project Approach; Let's Begin with the Letter People; Doors to Discovery; and Pre-K Mathematics with DLM Express Math Resource Package. IES is especially interested in curricula that produce skills that are most highly predictive of academic success in the early years of elementary school and are most amenable to influences in the classroom. This solicitation is intended to support near-term fundamental gasification technologies research projects that are: 1) Fundamental in nature, and 2) Important for the commercial success of gasification technologies. It is anticipated that the resultant projects will provide fundamental data useful to many organizations across the industry to help move gasification technologies toward the commercial marketplace. A secondary objective is to increase university involvement with the Gasification Technologies Program to ensure the inclusion of fresh, innovative ideas in the program, and to educate future scientists and engineers in gasification technologies. 1-9 Development of High-Throughput Screening Approaches for Prioritizing Chemicals for the Endocrine Disruptors Screening Program (NCER)
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking applications for new approaches that can lead to the development of high-throughput screening systems to assist in prioritization of chemicals for further screening and testing of their potential as endocrine disruptors. In view of the estimated tens of thousands of chemicals under consideration for screening for endocrine disrupting activity, it is essential that rapid, sensitive, and reproducible high-throughput screening systems be developed. This request for applications invites research proposals that explore novel approaches to the development of such systems for identifying chemicals with estrogen, androgen, or thyroid hormone activities.
The Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) of the National Science Foundation plans a limited number of grants for the support of computing environments for research in the mathematical sciences. Proposals may request support for the purchase of computing equipment and limited support for professional systems administrators or programmer personnel for research computing needs. These grants are intended to support research projects of high quality that require access to advanced computing resources. Proposers are encouraged to include projects involving symbolic and algebraic computations, numerical computations and simulations, as well as graphical representations (visualization) in aid of the research. The Transportation Department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics is seeking applications for projects that support the development of the field of transportation statistics and/or involve research or development in transportation statistics. Examples of interest areas are: quantifying the safety culture of transportation companies and identifying minimum data required and assessing its ability to predict accident risk; researching the utility of narrative text in accident and near-miss reports to identify precursors of an accident and developing tools to extract information from accident reports; and measuring the vulnerability of the transportation system and users to crime and terrorism. This Request for Applications (RFA) emphasizes the ongoing commitment of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) to support research activities focusing on the development and dissemination of health communication information across the disciplines of communication sciences and disorders. The purpose of this RFA is to encourage the submission of research grant applications that investigate the creation, development, and evaluation of health information in one or more mission areas of the NIDCD: hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech or language. Applications should be from interdisciplinary teams that include both health communication experts and scientists knowledgeable about normal and disordered processes of human communication. DC-03-001
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) invite Research Grant Applications (R01 and R21) for projects that have the potential to improve the utility of magnetic resonance imaging as a method for quantitative determinations of tissue iron, especially in liver, heart and brain. A quantitative means of measuring body storage iron that would be non-invasive, safe, accurate and readily available, would improve the diagnosis and management of patients with iron overload, including hereditary hemochromatosis, thalassemia major, sickle cell disease, aplastic anemia, myelodysplasia and other disorders.
