The purpose of this program is to strengthen the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' (NIEHS) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) support of research aimed at achieving environmental justice for socioeconomically disadvantaged and medically underserved populations in the United States. One goal of the participating Institutes and Centers (ICs) is to understand the influence of economic and social factors on the health status of individuals exposed to environmental toxicants and occupational hazards. This component of the research program is designed to encourage community outreach, training, research, education and evaluation efforts that will become the catalyst for reducing exposure to or reducing the health impact from environmental and occupational stresses in underserved populations. On behalf of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the National Science Foundation invites proposals for 12-month postdoctoral research fellowships from beginning scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. Awards are made to US institutions to host scientists from NATO Partner Countries (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan). 40-3 Exploring the Interface between Geology and Biology: Opportunities in Geomicrobial Processes (NSF)
This is the first announcement in the new Biogeosciences Program of the Directorate for Geosciences and will focus this year on microbial processes in two topical elements. Topic one emphasizes understanding microbial processes affecting geological materials; microbial strategies in environments unique to microbial life, interpreting current microbial interactions with geologic media; identifying past records of such interactions, understanding microbial adaptions to current geologic alterations and deciphering the record of such adaptions in the past. The second focus, on methods for study of geomicrobial processes, includes: model systems, geochemical methods and nanoscale investigations.
The Winn Feline Foundation, affiliated with the Cat Fanciers' Association, Inc., is a non-profit organization, which supports research into medical problems affecting cats. The Winn Feline Foundation makes funds available each year for such studies. During the fiscal year ending April 30, 2002, The Winn Feline Foundation funded grants in such areas as feline mycoplasma, oral cancer chemotherapy, diabetic control, feline inflammatory bowel disease, feline liver diseases, feline infectious peritonitis, congestive heart failure and infectious diseases in feral free-roaming cats.
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History invites applications for short-term fellowships in American Civilization in two categories: Research Fellowships for post-doctoral scholars at every faculty rank; and Dissertation Fellowships for doctoral candidates in their final year before submission. The Gilder Lehrman Fellowships support work in one of four archives: The Gilder Lehrman Collection (re-opening June 2003, after temporary closure); The Library of the New York Historical Society; The Colombia University Rare Book and Manuscript Collection; and The New York Public Library.
The Adaptation and Implementation (CCLI-A&I) track within CCLI promotes the improvement of STEM education in the funded institution(s) through adaptation and implementation of specific exemplary materials, laboratory experiences, and/or educational practices that have been developed and proven successful at other institutions. CCLI-A&I projects should effect change within or across departments or other institutional units by having broad faculty and administrative support. The CCLI-A&I track invites proposals for two types of projects that aim to achieve these goals: those that intend to undertake direct curriculum improvement (Type 1), and those that enable a group of faculty to explore strategies for overcoming identified challenges and barriers to educational reform (Type II). Office supply retailer Staples Inc. announced last month the creation of its new charitable foundation, the Staples Foundation for Learning. The foundation will focus on programs that teach, train and inspire people from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds. The foundation expects to fund programs that support or provide job skills and education opportunities for all people, with special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. FGA 9/02
The Education Department is seeking applications for Upward Bound projects designed to give high schools students the skills and motivation to succeed in post-secondary education. ED will give priority to projects that serve students at risk of not succeeding in higher education, for example, students with grade point averages in the C or D range as high school freshmen and students with few credits in core academic subjects. The AMS Centennial Research Fellowship Program makes awards annually to outstanding mathematicians to help further their careers in research. The primary selection criterion for the Centennial Fellowship is the excellence of the candidate's research. Preference will be given to candidates who have not had extensive fellowship support in the past. A recipient of the fellowship shall have held his or her doctoral degree for at least three years and not more than twelve years at the inception of the award.
40-11 Lane Widths, Channelized Right Turns, and Right-Turn Deceleration Lanes in Urban and Suburban Areas (NRC)
The objective of this project is to develop design guidelines or criteria addressing the safety and operational trade-offs for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists for three specific topics: selecting lane widths, channeling right turns, and using right-turn deceleration lanes at driveways and unsignalized intersections. This project is intended to address urban and suburban arterials and collectors with speeds of 45 mph or less. For this project, consideration of pedestrians should include a full range of ages and visual, as well as other, impairments.
DOE is seeking applications from U.S. universities and colleges with operating research reactors. The purpose of the URI program is to upgrade and improve the U.S. university nuclear research and training reactors and to contribute to strengthening the academic community's nuclear engineering infrastructure. Applications for URI should be directed to the upgrade, purchase or maintenance of equipment and instrumentation 1) related to the performance, control or operational capability of the reactor and/or facility, 2) for radiation detection and measurement in laboratories directly related to the reactor facility, 3) for security enhancements at the reactor facility. Applications for equipment and instrumentation that significantly improves or expands the research and training capabilities of the reactor facility will be considered. DE-PS07-03ID14434
The NIA is soliciting applications that use comparative biology approaches to understand the biological mechanisms that lead to changes in human and other animal cells and tissues with age. The major questions to be addressed under this RFA are: How does increasing age lead to biological changes, especially decrements in cell, tissue and organ function; and what sets the rate of aging such that different organisms have different life expectancies? Studies that take advantage of the differences in aging and life expectancy between species and within species to investigate hypotheses on the mechanisms of aging are encouraged. The goal of this RFA is to conduct pharmacogenetic studies in ongoing or completed clinical trials/studies related to heart, lung, blood, and sleeping disorders. Specifically, this RFA focuses on the collection and utilization of DNA from study participants drug responses. Such studies may help elucidate basic mechanisms of drug effects and adverse reactions and may facilitate optimal selection of therapy in individual patients as well as mitigating serious adverse response or lack of response to therapy. Investigators trained in different areas and working as collaborative teams are needed to achieve insights into the contribution of genetic variation on individual drug responses. The Office of Biological and Environmental Research of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), hereby announces its interest in receiving applications in support of the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) subprogram of the Human Genome Program (HGP). Applications should focus on issues of: 1) genetics and the workplace, and 2) complex or multigenetic traits. This particular research notice invites research applications that address ethical, legal, and social implications resulting from the use of information and knowledge resulting from the HGP. Endowed by POSCO, the POSCO Visiting Fellowships Program at the East-West Center invites out-standing scholars and policy makers principally from North America but also from Australia, New Zealand, and European countries to engage in policy relevant research on political, security, and economic issues in Northeast Asia including Korea. POSCO visiting fellows will be in residence at the East-West Center for one to two months and undertake research and writing on an agreed upon topic.
