The University of Kansas is hosting an NEH regional proposal development workshop January 13-14, 2003, 8:00-5:00. Dr. Kenneth Kolson, Deputy Director of the NEH Division of Research Programs, will present the workshop. The opening morning, 8:30-11:45 AM, includes an overview of NEH grant programs, a panel discussion and mock review of NEH applications, and a discussion of the proposal review process. The afternoon and all day Tuesday will be allocated to 20-minute-long review sessions with Dr. Kolson. Preregistration deadline is December 2, 2002. Deadline for concept papers to be reviewed is December 9, 2002.
The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has issued its FY 2003 Broad Agency Announcement inviting proposals for basic research in support of the Air Force Defense Research Sciences Program. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intends to solicit proposals for the investigations that contribute to the NASA's Earth Science Enterprise's multidisciplinary research in climate, chemistry, and global modeling. The NASA disciplines included in this NRA are the Radiation Sciences program, the Global Modeling and Analysis Program (GMAP), the Tropospheric Chemistry Program (TCP) and cross-cutting Interdisciplinary Science (IDS) research. The objective of this project is to perform intervention experiments to test the hypothesis that classroom upgrades resulting in improved thermal control or improved air quality would significantly improve the performance of school work by children, to determine as far as possible the causative mechanism or mechanisms by which this would occur, and to quantify the improvement in health, absenteeism, and school performance that would be likely to occur in practice if such improvements were implemented by school authorities. The Higher Education Challenge Grants program seeks to stimulate and enable colleges and universities to provide the quality of education necessary to produce baccalaureate or higher degree level graduates capable of strengthening the nation's food and agricultural scientific and professional work force. New for FY 2003, projects focused on teaching improvements at the Masters degree level in multidisciplinary studies will be accepted in addition to undergraduate teaching improvement proposals. In addition to existing areas of interest in Curriculum Design and Materials Development, proposals are also solicited that conduct research on the effectiveness and impact of recent teaching innovations. Also, within the Student Experiential Learning Need Area, proposals are encouraged that support undergraduate or first professional degree students' participation in laboratory internships that expose students to research environments in academia and/or industry.
The Pollock-Krasner Foundation's dual criteria for grants are recognizable artistic merit and demonstrable financial need, whether professional, personal, or both. The foundation's mission is to aid, internationally, those individuals who have worked as professional artists over a significant period of time. The foundation encourages applications from artists who have genuine financial needs that are not necessarily catastrophic. The foundation welcomes applications from visual artists who are painters, sculptors, and artists who work on paper (including printmakers).
The Huntington is an independent research center with holdings in British and American history, literature, art history, and the history of science and medicine. The Library collections range chronologically from the ninth century to the present and include 600,000 photographs, a half-million rare books, nearly five million manuscripts, and a large ephemera collection, supported by a half-million reference works. Areas of special strength include: Middle Ages, Renaissance, nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature, history of science, British drama, Colonial America, American Civil War, Western America, and California. In the library of the Botanical Gardens is a broad collection of reference works in botany, horticulture, and gardening. Recipients of all fellowships are expected to be in continuous residence at the Huntington.
This NSF program supports scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the high technology workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate level degree in computer science, computer technology, engineering, engineering technology, or mathematics. Academic institutions apply for awards to support scholarship activities, and are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic information about student scholars, and managing the CSEMS project at the institution. The program seeks to broaden the participation of girls and young women in all fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by supporting research, demonstration, and dissemination projects that will lead to change in education policy and practice. Typical projects will investigate gender-related differences in learning; gender-related differences in educational experience, interest, and performance; and pedagogical approaches and teaching styles that are gender-neutral or encouraging to female students. The finding and outcomes of the program will lead to understanding, for example, how to maintain the interest of students in science after middle school, how to bring more students into elective high school mathematics and advanced placement science courses, and how to increase enrollments in undergraduate studies in STEM, particularly in physical sciences, engineering and computer sciences. Large requests that will engage many student or educator participants are expected to involve multiple partner institutions. Proposals are received on two different deadlines during the year, depending on areas of emphasis. For the Elementary and Middle School, Informal Education (K-12) competition, an organization may submit one full proposal as the primary performer, or may be included as a collaborator on one full proposal submitted by one other organization, but may not do both. For the High School, Undergraduate, Teacher and Faculty Development, and Educational Technologies competition, an organization may submit one full proposal as the primary performer, or may be included as a collaborator onone full proposal submitted by one other organization, but may not do both. The Department of Energy has issued a presolicitation notice for financial assistance awards for cost-shared research and development of technologies that will enhance research and development in fuel cell technology. While DOE is seeking industry cost-shared projects to address several topic areas, where the nature of the work is multi-disciplinary, teaming arrangements are preferred. The ITR Program is interested in fostering visionary work that could lead in the future to major advances, new and unanticipated technologies, revolutionary applications, or new ways to preform important activities. The program is especially interested in multidisciplinary research. The intent in FY 2003 is to stimulate research on the fundamental challenges facing the continued expansion and utilization of IT across the sciences and engineering, creation of novel use and development of IT, the interaction of IT with society at large, and the use of IT to enhance security and reduce the vulnerabilities of our society to catastrophic events, whether natural or man-made. The Solar System Exploration Division of the Office of Space Science (OSS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), intends to release an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) to solicit proposals for planetary space flight science investigations through the New Frontiers Program. New Frontiers is a new Solar System exploration program for midsize planetary missions built around a clearly announced set of goals and science priorities derived from both NASA's ongoing strategic planning process and the Decadal Survey of Planetary Science to be published by the National Academy of Sciences. The American Federation for Aging Research offers Research Grants to junior faculty to do research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts. Support is provided for a broad range of biomedical and clinical topics. AFAR/Pfizer Research Grants support grants in specific areas of research. For 2003 the focus is Metabolic Control and Late Life Diseases
The Population Council awards fellowships for advanced training in population studies (including demography and public health) in combination with a social science discipline, such as economics, sociology, anthropology, or geography. Proposals must deal with the developing world. Fellowships are available for Predoctoral Training for candidates who have completed all course work requirements toward a Ph.D; for Postdoctoral Training; for Midcareer Training; and for Resident Training at the Population Council.
The National Physical Science Consortium offers doctoral fellowships to all qualified students, but there is emphasis toward the recruitment of minority and female science and engineering students.Fellowships provide tuition, fees and research stipends for up to six years and include two paid summers of internship at a sponsoring employer's research facility.
