This special competition promotes comprehensive, integrated investigations of environmental systems using advanced scientific and engineering methods. 36-2 Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research (NSF)

The Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research (FIBR) Program seeks to support integrative research which addresses major questions in the biological sciences. FIBR encourages investigators to identify major under-studied or unanswered questions in biology and to develop innovative approaches to address them by integrating the scientific concepts and research tools of biology, math and the physical sciences, engineering, social sciences and the information sciences. Particularly encouraged are the inclusion of young scientists trained in an interdisciplinary environment or in non-biological disciplines, and partnerships with minority serving and primarily undergraduate institutions and community colleges. 36-3 National Needs Fellowships (ED)

The Education Department is seeking applications to provide fellowships to needy graduate students pursuing advanced study in areas of national need. Eligible applicants are academic departments of higher education institutions that provide fellowships in one or more of the following areas: biology, chemistry, computer and information sciences, engineering, geological and related science, mathematics and physics. 36-4 International Research and Studies (ED)

The Education Department is seeking applications for research and studies to develop instructional materials for the languages of certain geographic areas. The priority is to develop language instruction materials for regions of the Near or Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Inner Asia, the Far East, Africa or Latin America. Within the priority, ED favors applications that purpose developing specialized materials for use in teaching languages of the Islamic nations of the Middle East and Central Asia and the languages of South Asia. 36-5 Innovative Technologies for Addressing Various Environmental Problems (DOD)

36-6 Partnership in Basic Plasma Science and Engineering (NSF)

The Directorates for Engineering, Geosciences, and Mathematics and Physical Sciences of the NSF and the Office of Science/Office of Fusion Energy Sciences of the Department of Energy are continuing in FY2003 the joint Partnership in Basic Plasma Science and Engineering. The goal of the initiative is to enhance plasma research and education in this broad, multidisciplinary field by coordinating efforts and combining resources of the two agencies. The initiative will address fundamental issues in plasma science and engineering that can have impact in other areas or disciplines in which improved basic understanding of the plasma state is needed. 36-7 Test and Evaluation Research (DOD)

Currently, the Department of Defense Test and Evaluation (T&E) ranges rely on film based imaging systems for the recording, storage and archiving of critical weapons test data. The Digital Video Systems Development (DVSD) program was initiated to advance and integrate telecommunications, computer system technologies, optics, sensors, cameras, tracking, archival systems, and related instrumentation associated with digital image acquisition. 36-9 Update of the Climatic Design Conditions in the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals (ASHRAE)

ASHRAE provides tables of climatic conditions for 1459 locations in the United States, Canada, and around the world in Chapter 27 of the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals (HOF). These summaries include values of dry-bulb, wet-bulb and dew point temperature and wind speed with direction at various frequencies of occurrence over an annual period. This work statement is concerned with revising the tabular data in Chapter 27 to address the expressed need for updated values of percentiles calculated from recent historical weather data sets, expanding the number of geographical locations, calculating additional climatic elements, and expanding the monthly percentiles to include all locations. 1273-TRP

36-10 Procedures for Reconciling Computer-calculated Results with Measured Energy Data (ASHRAE)

The objective of this work statement is to develop robust procedures and how-to-instructions to characterize and minimize the discrepancy between the results of building energy simulation programs and measured energy data (i.e., calibration assessment methods). There are two thrusts to be emphasized: 1) To define discrepancy between simulation results and measured data, and to relate it to the definition of uncertainty of energy savings estimation in ASHRAE Guideline 14P; 2) To develop a set of robust procedures, and a method for applying them, for the purpose of diagnosing and resolving such discrepancies in the most expedient and cogent manner; this part aims at systematizing and transferring expert energy modeler's know-how to the realm of the practitioner. 1051-TRP

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho Operations Office (ID) is seeking applications for research and development projects from U.S. colleges and universities with nuclear engineering programs or options or licensed, operating research reactors. 36-13 Pathobiology of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (NIH)

The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate cross-cutting, integrative research aimed at delineating the mechanisms underlying the etiology and pathogenesis of the orofacial structures associated with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJDs). The ultimate goal of this initiative is a systems approach, from the gene, molecule, cell to tissue, and organ, that will provide the basis to better understand TMJDs and lead to the development of new insights into treatment and management of these disorders. In the context of this initiative, integrative research is defined as the combined use of approaches from several different scientific disciplines such as cell biology, physiology, neurobiology, neuroendocrinology, genetics, molecular biology and imaging technologies to probe developmental, neurological, endocrine, immune and other relevant systems in order to define the mechanisms underlying the etiology and pathogenesis of TMJDs. 36-14 Career Development in Aging and Genetic Epidemiologic Research Methodology (NIH)

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) invites applications for the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) or the Mentored Research Scientist award (K01) for career development in study design, data collection, and analytical methods for genetic epidemiologic research that focuses on aging-related topics. The purpose of this Request for Applications (RFA) is to develop expertise in genetic epidemiologic methods and techniques that can aid in identifying effects of genetic factors and elucidating gene-environment dynamics, such as gene-environmental interactions, gene-environment correlations, and age-related changes in gene expression on: rates of age-related behavioral, physiologic and pathologic changes, differences in age of onset of diseases and disabilities, and/or broader outcomes not encompassed by disease diagnoses, such as exceptional longevity, in human populations. 36-15 Chronic Stress and its Relation to Drug Abuse and Addiction (NIH)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is encouraging research on adaptive changes within the brain brought about by chronic stress or repeated stressors and their functional relevance to drug use, abuse, and addictive processes. The relationship between drugs of abuse such as cocaine and heroin, activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and neural substrates subserving cognitive or behavioral processes under conditions of chronic stress is complex, but studies of these relationships may provide clues as to how drugs of abuse can produce persistent changes in the brain that in turn modulate behavioral processes, including drug-seeking and drug-taking behavior. The National Science Foundation (NSF) aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, mathematics, and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 900 graduate fellowships each year, including awards for women in engineering and computer and information science.
