The University of Kansas' Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), an NIH-funded grant to the Center for Cancer Experimental Therapeutics, is offering First Awards designed to help new faculty attain competitive funding. Faculty members who have not served as principal investigators on a federal agency research grant and who are in their first three years of their appointments are eligible to receive up to $100,000 for two years. Research must fall under the research interests of the National Cancer Institute of the NIH and the Center for Cancer Experimental Therapeutics.
The National Library of Medicine wishes to support informatics research that addresses information management problems relevant to management of disasters. Disasters can be caused by nature or by man, through accident or by malice. Terrorism, particularly bioterrorism, is now an important focus of federal activity, but terrorism is only one of a number of threats to public safety classified as disasters. Disaster management is heavily dependent on efficient flow of information. In an effort to advance research relevant to the mission of the National Institutes of Health (which includes basic biomedical, clinical biomedical, bioengineering, bioimaging or behavioral research), the participating Institutes and Centers solicit applications for the Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award (K25). The K25 mechanism is meant to attract to NIH-relevant research those investigators whose quantitative science and engineering research has thus far not been focused primarily on questions of health and disease. Example of quantitative scientific and technical backgrounds considered appropriate for this award include, but are not limited to: mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, imaging science, informatics, physics, chemistry, and engineering. The Pond Dynamics/Aquaculture Collaborative Research Support Program (PD/A CRSP) Management Entity (ME) is inviting two-year proposals for the first work plan of a prospective, new 5-year CRSP grant (2003-2008) from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). A successful proposal will likely include multiple research investigations that focus on one geographic region and one or more of the CRSP research themes. Funding for multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary proposals is envisioned.
Minigrants are available to faculty for class projects which incorporate service-learning into an existing course. Service learning is a teaching/learning methodology, meant to be used as a teaching tool, not as an add-on to a course. Allowable expenses for minigrant funds include, but are not limited to: instructional books, materials and supplies, communication, and travel. All projects must incorporate the four elements of the service-learning model: 1) Preparation, 2) Experience, 3) Reflection, and 4) Assessment.

The Education Department's Office of Vocational Education seeks applications to strengthen the role of community and technical colleges in easing student transitions between secondary and postsecondary education and improving academic performance. Eligible applicants are consortia that include both: a national or international nonprofit private membership organization comprising higher education institutions that offer a two-year, associate-degree or certificate program; and two or more individual higher education institutions that offer a two-year associate degree or certificate program. Consortium applications must propose entering into at least 10 and up to 20 partnerships to expand career and college transition programs that focus on one or more broad high-growth occupation areas. The Collaborative Research in Chemistry (CRC) Program is designed to promote interdisciplinary collaborative research in a coherent, defined project at the forefront of the chemical sciences. CRC proposals will involve three or more investigators with complementary expertise, each of whom is an independent researcher with an established research group. Collaborators may include investigators with backgrounds in diverse areas of chemistry and other science and engineering disciplines appropriate to the proposed research. The National Center for Research Resources proposes to foster the development of improved technologies and methods for proteomics and glycomics research by sponsoring integrated Biomedical Technology Research Resources through the P41 mechanism. One way to confront the growing analytical challenges of the genome era is to pursue technology development primarily along integrated lines of inquiry rather than single technologies. This is particularly true in the field of proteomics. These integrated Research Resources will develop a range of innovative analytical tools and methods, and apply these tools to biologically significant problems. The Office of Naval Research is soliciting pre-proposals and proposals for basic research leading to an increased understanding of human vulnerabilities resulting from exposure to external stimuli. Stimuli of interest may include various forms of electromagnetic energy, electrical stimulation, atmospheric overpressure, acoustic fields and other non-chemical or non-biological based stimuli. They are specifically interested in the biological and cognitive effects of stimuli that are non-lethal, but may cause temporary discomfort or debilitation to personnel. They are especially interested in efforts seeking to investigate the fundamental physiological mechanisms associated with one or more specific temporary debilitating conditions. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invite research applications that apply recent advances in affective science, basic behavioral science, and measurement theory to the development of an instrument or assessment battery to assess depression. The instrument must be psychometrically sound, time-efficient, and suitable for tracking changes in symptoms and functioning as a repeated measure over time or in response to therapeutic intervention. Functional impairments for which treatments would be necessary or beneficial should be defined and assessed in the context of any instrument developed. Collaborations are expected between scientists examining basic behavioral processes, (e.g., emotion, motivation, cognition) researchers studying the behavioral biology of mood disorders, clinical investigators studying the etiology, course or treatment of depression, and experts in contemporary measurement theory.
